Today I welcome SARAH BAILEY author of The Dark Lake, Into The Night, Where The Dead Go and The Housemate, for another episode of The Writing Diaries where we've been documenting Sarah's journey of writing an entire manuscript from the beginning of July to Christmas. We're way past the writing stage, we're at a whole new place - structural report.
Sarah Bailey is a Melbourne-based writer with a background in advertising and communications. She has two young children and is currently the Managing Partner of advertising agency VMLY&R in Melbourne. Over the past five years she has written a number of short stories and opinion pieces. Her first novel, the bestselling The Dark Lake, was published by Allen & Unwin in 2017, followed by Into the Night in 2018. Where the Dead Go is her third novel in the Gemma Woodstock series. Ahead of the release of 'The Housemate', Shanu and Sarah sat down with Sarah to discuss the novel, stepping into new writing territory, knowing when to add light to a dark tale, and more. *Producer's Note: Due to our team being in social isolation, the sound quality is more variable. Where could they be hiding a dragon egg? Behind the Hall of Sacred Scrolls? The tavern? The middle of the Dark Lake? The party continues to track down the egg, hopefully they find it soon.
Sarah Bailey is an Advertising Exec by day, crime writer by night. In fact she is the best selling and award winning author of The Dark Lake, Into the Night and Where the dead go. It became very clear to Sarah from an early age that if she wanted to get what she wanted she needed to set goals and manage her time effectively. In this episode Sarah explains her relationship with time and how she has let go of "pre worry and post worry" in order to find pockets of time and clarity that allow her to pack in all of her doing. As Sarah says, the only way to get it all done is to "spend less time worrying and more time doing. Four years after the events of Into the Night, DS Gemma Woodstock is on the trail of a missing girl in a small coastal town. 'Every bit as addictive and suspenseful as The Dark Lake ... Sarah Bailey's writing is both keenly insightful and wholly engrossing, weaving intriguing and multi-layered plots combined with complicated and compelling characters.' The Booktopian A fifteen-year-old girl has gone missing after a party in the middle of the night. The following morning her boyfriend is found brutally murdered in his home. Was the girl responsible for the murder, or is she also a victim of the killer? But who would want two teenagers dead? The aftermath of a personal tragedy finds police detective Gemma Woodstock in the coastal town of Fairhaven with her son Ben in tow. She has begged to be part of a murder investigation so she can bury herself in work rather than taking the time to grieve and figure out how to handle the next stage of her life - she now has serious family responsibilities she can no longer avoid. But Gemma also has ghosts she must lay to rest. Gemma searches for answers, while navigating her son's grief and trying to overcome the hostility of her new colleagues. As the mystery deepens and old tensions and secrets come to light, Gemma is increasingly haunted by a similar missing persons case she worked on not long before. A case that ended in tragedy and made her question her instincts as a cop. Can she trust herself again? A riveting thriller by the author of the international bestseller The Dark Lake, winner of both the Ned Kelly Award and the Sisters in Crime Davitt Award for a debut crime novel.
We discuss chapters 7-12 of The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov. Our favourite detective buddy-cop finally took a turn towards some action as Lije Bailey and Daneel Olivaw are left to outrun cultists on the strips of New York City, 3000 years in our future. Can the pair stay safe and solve the crime as it seems the very city itself is against them? We also sat down with Australian crime writer Sarah Bailey, winner of the 2018 Ned Kelly Award for best First Crime Novel with her book The Dark Lake.
