On this episode I'm joined by Michelle Kuo, Chief Curator at Large and Publisher, of the MoMA, as we discuss Jack Whitten: The Messenger, the first comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the groundbreaking art of Jack Whitten (American, 1939–2018). The exhibition showcased more than 175 works from the 1960s to the 2010s, including paintings, sculptures, rarely shown works on paper, and archival materials to explore the depth and breadth of Whitten's near six-decade career. The show was critically acclaimed, and emotionally impactful. In the episode, Kuo describes the collaborative and intensive five-year process involved in curating the exhibition, highlighting Whitten's innovative approaches to art, his engagement with technology, and the deep emotional and historical context in his work. As Kuo describes Whitten's work alongside canonical figures such as Rothko, Picasso, and Mondrian, she more importantly references the ways in which he reconfigured art history and the abstract expressionist movement with the use of new tools and techniques. US House approves 'Honest Maps' amendment targeting China's depiction of Taiwan The U-S House has passed an amendment banning the Defense Department from creating, buying, or displaying any map that shows Taiwan as part of the People's Republic of China. The "Honest Maps" amendment was proposed by Republican Representative Tom Tiffany and approved as part of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for the 2026 fiscal year. The amendment prohibits using any funds from the Act to create, buy, or display maps that show Taiwan, Kinmen, Matsu, Penghu, Wuciou, Green Island, or Orchid Island as part of the P-R-C. The Act includes 831.5-billion U-S dollars in discretionary (自行決定的) spending. Officials deny 32% US tariff rumors Economics minister Kuo Jyh-huei is dismissing claims that the U-S has already set a 32-per cent tariff rate for Taiwan. Speaking at a legislative hearing, Kuo said he has no idea where the rumors came from and he remains confident that Taiwan can negotiate a lower tariff rate than the 25-per cent given to Japan and South Korea. Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee is also denying the rumors (謠言) about the tariff rate - saying the government has yet to receive any notification from Washington. On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's apparent plan to launch a low-cost MacBook powered by an iPhone chip. Earlier this week, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple is set to launch an all-new "affordable" MacBook powered by an iPhone chip. The machine is expected to feature a 13-inch display, the A18 Pro chip, and color options that include silver, blue, pink, and yellow. MacRumors first spotted evidence of such a device in backend code related to Apple Intelligence last summer, and subsequently confirmed its use of the A18 Pro chip. The machine features the identifier "Mac17,1." This would be the first Mac powered by an ‌‌iPhone‌‌ chip. To date, all Apple silicon Macs have contained M-series chips, which offer higher core counts, support for larger amounts of memory, and better external display support. The A18 Pro chip debuted in the iPhone 16 Pro last year. With the A18 Pro chip, the device is highly unlikely to feature Thunderbolt ports, more than 8GB of unified memory, and support for more than one external display. In line with how Apple tends to handle its other low-cost devices, the new MacBook could re-use the design and chassis of an older machine like the M1 MacBook Air to keep costs down and differentiate it from the ‌MacBook Air‌. Apple could also revive the simple "MacBook" moniker, separating it from the ‌MacBook Air‌ and MacBook Pro, and mirroring the iPad lineup, which simply has the ‌iPad‌ as the entry-level model.  According to Kuo, the new MacBook is expected to enter mass production late in the fourth quarter of 2025 or early in the first quarter of 2026, which situates launch in the first half of next year. Interior Minister disbands standby rescue team to help Myanmar after Earthquake Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang says the government has disbanded a rescue team that was on standby to travel to Myanmar following last Friday's magnitude 7.7 earthquake. According to Liu, her office made the decision after considering the continuing military conflict between Myanmar's military junta and local rebel groups over the past few days despite the strong earthquake. Liu told reporters the government would be unable to guarantee the safety of rescue team members once they arrive there and decided to take team members off standby (支援) and allow them to return to their regular operations in Taiwan. The rescue teams had been on standby since late Friday. Lithuania 3 Missing Soldiers Bodies Recovered The U.S. Army says three of the soldiers who went missing in Lithuania have been found dead in an armored vehicle that was pulled from a swampy area in Lithuania early Monday. Another soldier is still missing. The bodies of the three were recovered after a massive (大量的) six-day effort by U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces and authorities to dig the M88 Hercules vehicle out of a peat bog at the training ground. The Army says the soldiers were on a tactical training exercise when they and their vehicle were reported missing early Tuesday. Hundreds of Lithuanian and U.S. soldiers and rescuers had joined the search through the thick forests and swampy terrain.
