1. When you look at this EDGE class, there are no sure-fire top-10 picks, yet it is ripe with sky-high potential. Two current budding EDGE stars (Brian Burns and Montez Sweat) were selected outside the top-10 in the 2019 draft (Burns at 16 overall, Sweat at 26 overall). Do you anticipate a similar eventual outcome from this year’s class? 2. The top EDGE on your board at the moment is Gregory Rousseau of Miami. What makes him such an interesting evaluation is that he only has a four-month sample of college tape since he got hurt after a few snaps in 2018 (his freshman year) and opted out due to COVID-19 this past year. But that four-month sample in 2019 is staggering as he posted 15.5 sacks and earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. What makes him the top EDGE on your board right now? How much of a fall down the board, if any, will he experience given his relatively minute sample of game tape? 3. You have two other EDGE prospects ranked just slightly behind Rousseau in Michigan’s Kwity Paye and Georgia’s Azeez Ojulari. Both are super-freakish athletic specimens, yet some top analysts believe Paye’s film was underwhelming and that Ojulari needs to add a lot of moves to his rush. If you were a GM and your team ran a defensive scheme that was equally accommodating to the skillsets of both players, which one would you select and why? 4. Penn State’s Jayson Oweh is another intriguing EDGE prospect. While he only posted five sacks in his two seasons at Happy Valley, he possesses as much mouth-watering traits as the prospects we mentioned so far. Would you be surprised if he ended up as the best EDGE in this class? 5. This defensive line class (specifically defensive tackle) is not a good one this year. The top DT prospect on most analyst boards is Christian Barmore from Alabama. Given the poor depth of the group, is Barmore worth a top-20, if not a top-15 pick in your view? 6. The next two DT’s behind Barmore on most analyst boards are Washington’s Levi Onwuzurike and Iowa’s Daviyon Nixon. What do you like/dislike about their games and are any of them worth a late-first round pick? 7. Who are some of your late day 2/day 3 sleepers? 8. Iowa faces Miami to open the 2019 season, so we tried to line up Dan LeBatard before realizing it was the Miami in Ohio.  So instead, we talk Redhawks with Jordan Rinard from Hustle Belt, the SBN MAC site.  After that, we discuss some of the late developments in Iowa's roster, including the eligibility waiver for Oliver Martin and apparent huge step forward by Daviyon Nixon. The On Iowa Podcast decided to get a jump on media day. Why not? We went long off the top with a discussion led by a couple of topics The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman covered this week: Five potential breakout players and some statistics that will show up and matter for the 2019 Hawkeyes. The players discussion spiraled into mostly the “underappreciated player” category. But, yeah, it’s going to be fun to see what defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon can do and what Tyler Linderbaum can be at center. Media day is here. It’s a day where you can forget about writing your version of the “Encyclopedia Hawkeye.” You make a plan, go in and try to be smart with your time. Yes, sounding like a football coach more and more every day. Sigh. We hit a ton of Twitter questions. Everyone was on their game. Wait, someone did ask about changing “Back in Black” for the Penn State game because that’s the gold uniform night. I know, I know, it’s preseason for everyone. Yes, I’m loose from the noose, forevermore.

Yes, today is the opener … for spring football. C’mon, what did you think the #oniowapod was going to say? Scott and I nerded out on Kirk Ferentz’s Tuesday news conference. We talked 4-2-5 defense, slot receiver and, of course, defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon’s unveiling. I have to say, it felt really good. I know it’s baseball’s opening day. We’ll check that out later with a Hamm’s. We talked Iowa spring, the NFL draft and a lot of hoops. Iowa men's basketball woke up in the NCAA Tournament. It was a moral victory and, yeah, that’s not the goal, but it was a notch up. Big things still out there for Iowa hoops. I totally get skepticism toward next year, but let’s not get too catastrophic thinking for hoops yet. Wait until at least September. Enjoy the baseball and thanks for listening.

It’s March in eastern Iowa. Cue the tournament doldrums. Or not. The bottom line with Iowa basketball right now is it’s not over. You can’t totally assess the season until it’s over. You certainly can start forming your opinions, and, holy moly, recency might seep into that opinion. And recency brings us – all of us, coaches, players, fans and media – to the conclusion that it’s March in eastern Iowa and cue the tournament doldrums. The ball is literally in Iowa’s court to change this narrative. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and I rattled around opinions and conclusion on Fran McCaffery’s 2018-19 team. Yes, all of us, including them, are still waiting for the big, cool March thing. Is this fun? We also talk about the reverberations from the video Iowa football released Tuesday of OL Tristan Wirfs hang cleaning 450 pounds four times. If you want the big awards, the hype train needs this and needs it right now. People outside of our cozy Iowa football world here in eastern Iowa will know Wirfs’ name now.
