Doug Derda knows barbecue, so we asked him to share some of his secrets. His website, Yinz Love BBQ, is a compendium of all things rubbed, smoked, and sauce-slathered in Western Pennsylvania. There's a directory so you can source some good barbecue, a blog where he shares industry news and his competition experiences, and an events listing (although the latter might be less important at the moment). In this episode, Derda gives some current take-out recommendations and explains some of his at-home barbecue setup. If you plan on upping your grill game during this stay-home summer, we highlight some places to consider for meat shopping, and Derda shouts out Williams Ace Hardware in West Newton as one of his favorite one-stop shops for barbecue accessories and seasonings. Plus, Steel City Salt Co. in Millvale recently released an everything bagel blend, so you can shop local to spice up your homemade breads and biscuits. And don't snooze on ShuBrew's half-off growler fill Tuesdays. Links in this episode: Yinz Love BBQ Steel City Salt Co. ShuBrew

SESSION SUMMARY: Podcasts have become one of the most popular and consumed methods of media in today's on-the-go world. Many folks have replaced radio shows and music with podcasts covering a plethora of subjects while listening in the car, at the gym, or sitting at their desks at home and/or work. It's a tremendous way to learn, grow, and be entertained. No matter what subject matter you're most passionate about, chances are excellent you'll find a podcast dedicated to it if you search hard enough.Doug Derda has been doing a beer podcast since...well, pretty much since the beginning. His show, Should I Drink That?, first hit the podcast waves on Cinco de Mayo in 2006...a time when podcasting was in its infancy. Today on the Breaking Brews Podcast, Doug joins host Jason Cercone to talk about the evolution of podcasting, the many directions his show has taken, Doug's take on the beer industry today, and much more. The show starts with a look back at early podcasting technology and what it took to get Should I Drink That? spread around the Internet. You'll also hear the legendary story of how a YouTube video (also a new platform when SIDT first started) of Doug chugging a beer helped put their show on the map and how it's remained popular to this day. Doug also shares his opinions on 'beerholes.' Throughout the session, Doug and Jason dive into what it takes to put together a good podcast and how much it's changed since 2006 when Doug first cut his teeth in the medium. They discuss how much is involved with the entire process - from recording to editing to adding music to publishing to marketing and everything in between. They also share some tips and pointers you can utilize if you've been considering starting a podcast, whether it be about beer or any other topic you're passionate about. They also discuss how much can be learned by listening to other podcasts and absorbing how other hosts deliver their content. In addition, Doug and Jason share realistic expectations you should have when getting a podcast off the ground. Katie and Sorg are joined by Doug Derda this week. We were able to get Katie and Sorg away from Animal Crossing long enough to talk about this week’s news in tech, including: Katie is torn between her iPhone X and being dubbed in German as her Awesome Thing of the Week. Katie is talking about some of the cool stuff she’s done with her iPhone X for video. Doug is talking the future of smartphones with Samsung’s new battery tech that could fully charge a phone in minutes. Sorg is blaming Katie for his addiction to his Awesome Thing of the Week – Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. Y’know what, if you don’t want to wait 7 hours for pizza, head over to Slice and get some perfect pepperoni pizza. Although net neutrality issues aren’t cool, Pitchwerks put the perfect explanation together with some help from Spare Change. Shout out to Brian Crawford for picking up an iPad Pro. Speaking of – we’re talking about his question about whether or not we need a traditional laptop anymore. Watching TV while playing video games? Doug is talking about how things are changing. Back to the Future reference thanks to Doug and his multiple device usage commentary. If we’re doing all this stuff IRL, can you imagine VR adaptations? We talked last week about Ello coming back. People have noticed. There is naked spam. We’re talking some Carnegie Science Center omnimax upgrades! Want to kick your smartphone addiction? There’s a Substitute Phone to help you. After the show remember to: Shop small with our neighbors here in Beechview this weekend. We’ve got Ron “Krazy” Krause in studio this week joining Sorg and Katie, with Chilla reporting in from Studio C. They’re talking some of the current tech news, including: Katie is sharing her Awesome Thing of the Week. It involves cats and Backblaze. PSA: Remember to back up your stuff. Krause’s Awesome Thing of the Week is so awesome he doesn’t even have it in hand yet – the Pixel C. Chilla is talking about Oreo but not Oreos. There is a HUGE difference. Sometimes an iPad is more convenient – even for a Microsoft guy. Chilla is sharing an Apple release of AR kit apps and information as his Awesome Thing of the Week. We’ve got first world zombie problems over here, guys. Sorg’s Awesome Thing of the Week is Windows 7. (Yes, this is still 2017.) Sorg just proclaimed himself as a Windows hipster. Smart signals in Pittsburgh will help beat traffic jams. Tired of your kids not replying to your texts? There’s an app for that! Even though Doug Derda isn’t on the show tonight, we’re talking about his chat from earlier about Fitbit Ionic. With all the fitness watches and devices out there, there are a lot of options – but are they worth it? There’s an Amazon Echo Show? Apparently if you’re looking for something to yell at, you should look into an Amazon Echo. Krause is sharing some updates coming to the Amazon Echo. Because we have a scheduling conflict for our usual weekly podcast day (that's Tuesdays for those of you not in the know), we got together for an early edition of this week's show. Doug, Amanda, Katie, and Sorg are on air for AwesomeCast 340. This week we're talking about awesome things in technology, including: Katie gets to go to tradeshows for work. She's sharing some doodads as her Awesome Thing of the Week this week. Since Doug is playing with Katie's toys, he's sharing his Awesome Thing of the Week, Facebook Blueprint. Apparently Facebook certification tests are akin to clearance testing - lots of procedure and protocol. We're talking Facebook ads and marketing. Mobile apps aren't as friendly for marketing. Sorg's Awesome Thing of the Week is an Atomos digital recording adapter for his video camera. Thanks to Brandon for letting us know about the Nintendo Switch controller being able to use for NES Classic. Netflix, Hulu and other video services will also be available on Nintendo Switch. It's our last episode of the year. We're getting geeky and nostalgic - checking our predictions from last year and talking tech and social media predictions for 2017, with the local nerds that use it on AwesomeCast 329! We're LIVE with our year-end Christmas show with Doug Derda and Cynthia Closkey, talking about our awesome things of the year on this week's episode. Sling and cordcutting were our awesome things of the year for 2015 as we reflected back last year. Meerkat? Wow! Cynthia is sharing her awesome thing of the year for 2016 - her smart watch (Apple Watch) and wearables in general. Sorg is sharing his woes over the Pebble buyout in comparison to the Apple Watch. Doug is pitching a Kickstarter campaign for a Kickstarter movie talking about Kickstarter campaigns. Google Glass is still a discussion at the end of 2016. Wheelz is sharing his awesome thing of the year - his Samsung phone. Doug is sharing Facebook LIVE as his awesome thing of the year and how interesting instacontent is. Speaking of bleeding edge tech - we can't help but talk about iJustine and how she was livestreaming a decade ago. How do you stand out in a tidal wave of content now that instacontent is so available? Are people looking at instacontent for content or for interaction with other people? Doug is teaching us about the Musically app through his son's usage. Sorg's awesome thing of the year is self-driving cars - especially since he's been in one! Speaking of self-driving cars, studies show traffic would be better with less traffic lights. In-studio, breaking the 4th wall - John Chichilla (@chilla) and Doug Derda (@douglasderda) Doug is a featured daddy blogger in an article about his writing at douglasderda.com and it's a walk down memory lane back to PodCamp and the budding friendship that has blossomed for him and Sorg. "Daddy, your friends are on TV." Thanks to Chromecast, Doug generally watches the show on TV at home with his son. Spoon: Shoebox (shoebox.ancestry.com) - Turns your phone into a scanner to help with your family history search. Tip of the Week: Buy the Family Tree Maker (Nova Development) (@$75.00 value) which gives 6-month access to records via Ancestry.com for free and it updates your account online.
