In Episode 17, I speak again with my old friend and fellow rave war veteran, Phil Klein, also known as Bass Junkie. Phil is a highly respected UK music producer, having crafted tunes since the late 1980s, and is known for his deep love of Electro and Miami Bass. In this second of our two part discussion, we delve into his experiences with underground parties in the 1990s, his ventures to Miami for production collaborations with his Electro heroes Dynamix II, the establishment of his record label Battle Trax, and the release of his music under various aliases. Additionally, we touch upon the London Electro scene of the early 2000s, centred around parties from Haywire and the Foundry bar in Shoreditch, as well as delve into the intricacies of his ongoing music and podcasting endeavours. Phil is a highly respected UK music producer, having crafted tunes since the late 1980s, and is known for his deep love of Electro and Miami Bass. In this first of our two part discussion, we delve into his early music recollections, highlighting the pivotal moment when his cousin introduced him to the Street Sounds Electro series in 1983, an encounter that significantly altered the trajectory of his life. After reflecting on his memories of the iconic hip-hop event, UK Fresh, held at Wembley Arena in 1986, we then explore Phil's journey of delving into imported twelve-inch records from Groove Records in Soho, alongside his relentless pursuit of rare tunes. Subsequently, we explore his foray into mastering scratching techniques and crafting beats. Finishing this episode, we explore Phil's initiation into free parties, alongside members of the local Fear Teacher's sound system. In the next episode, we will delve into his experiences with underground parties in the 1990s, his ventures to Miami for production collaborations with Dynamix II, the establishment of his record label Battle Trax, and the release of music under various aliases. Additionally, we'll touch upon the London Electro scene of the early 2000s, centred around parties from Haywire and the Foundry bar in Shoreditch, as well as delve into the intricacies of his ongoing music and podcasting endeavours. Miami's legendary Dynamix II (1985), responsible for pioneering the genre of music known as Electro-Bass. Enjoy a simple edit for Dj's by Mr. Turner. May The Bass Be With You. Nothing Left To Say.
Let's give Bass Patrol their flowers Bass Patrol was a Miami Bass group signed to Jose Armada Jr.'s Joey Boy Records, although technically, two separate groups. The first Bass Patrol made waves with their debut album Rock this Planet in 1988. The sound was a vocoder-driven Electro Bass album released on the heels of the era's successful tracks by similarly themed acts Dynamix II, Maggotron, and MC A.D.E. The project seemed to be spearheaded by Calvin and Carlton Mills, Joey Boy Records' in-house production team (also known as Rock Force), and featured Miami area radio DJ Eddy Mix. As this entity, Bass Patrol released little else and found limited success. Joey Boy Records was known to own acts' names and reassign them to new groups. In this case, the label signed Orlando area producer DJ Fury and rapper RX Lord, then assigned them the Bass Patrol moniker. The duo was far less Electro-oriented. Similar to Tampa Bay area Quad Force, this incarnation of Bass Patrol bridged the car audio bass scene and the 3rd wave "booty bass" scene when they released the album Kings of Bass in 1992 as the label attempted to cash in on the marketing formula that made DJ Magic Mike the commercial success within the Bass scene. The act's success, and the label's loss of Rock Force, caused DJ Fury to become somewhat of a replacement in-house producer, as well as a solo artist. As Bass Patrol, he continued to produce several albums for the label until Jose Armada Jr. slimmed down operations before finally revamping his group of labels into a Gospel music outfit. DJ Fury continues to make music today for his own Full Moon Music, although not under the Bass Patrol name. D.O.H - I Ran Music sets my soul free to actually be whom and what I want to be! This is how I see myself as a Dj. My love for music goes all the way back from the 50’s to current. I started enjoying this scene in the early 90’s at many of the Tampa and Orlando clubs that made my love for Breaks grow into a life lasting experience that has changed me as much as the music has changed itself. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey it wasn’t until I came to Tampa, FL did I truly get to experience the love for breaks and the Producers and Dj’s that played this style of music. Some of my major influences I have had the pleasure of playing with and learning from areRob E &Security, Icey, Lee Coombs, Meryln, D- Extreme, Stylus, Dynamix II, Andy Hughes, Jason Brown Jon E Rotton and so many more. As well as someone who influenced me to learn more into this side of mixing music like JDub. I have had the pleasure and honor of being mentored by Dj Security who has taught me more than I ever would have realized one could learn in this art of mixing that we all love so much and to this day I remember being in the studio with him and having my break through moment while mixing some Electro Breaks which has turned into being the style of breaks that I am most truly passionate about playing. I have since been added to the label Fundamental Breakz Collective which has been a driving force in the breaks scene for over 21 years. Honored to be on this with so many talented Dj’s and extremely blessed that I was thought of to be included by the founders Rob E & Security. I also am involved in Grand Slam Crew, Monkey Tennis Group, Theoryon Records, SideShow Kuts, 1200 Hustle. I want the direction of my music to allow people to go on a journey that they might have thought was not possible at these times. A moment to just allow them to let everything go that hinders there progression into whatever they might want to become for that moment. If I have just 1 person tell me they enjoyed what I love to do and played for them. For me that is what it’s all about. The Armory Podcast has been woefully short on female artists, an oversight we intend to correct beginning with this week's special guest. In her hometown of Orlando and across North America they call her “The Bass Queen”. She's an accomplished DJ and producer and runs her own label, “Bad Baby”. She is the talented and lovely, Baby Anne, and we're thrilled to have her in The Armory this week. Now Press play. And get down! Baby Anne aka "The Bass Queen" has blazed a Trail across North America and Beyond with her DJ sets and Original Productions. Her signature recipe is a delicious fusion of high energy Electro Breaks and Miami Bass seasoned with funky beats and driving bass lines. Her musical influences range from Miami Bass stalwarts Dynamix II and AfroRican, to overseas tunes by Kraftwerk & 808 State, from statesides DJ Icey and Information Society to a host of Funky Freestyle records from back in the day! Baby Anne is known not only as a DJ but also a recording artist, having dropped loads of tracks on her own Bad Baby record label and DJ Icey's Zone Records Imprint as well as other labels. Her latest single "Baby Vicious", on Bad Baby is rocking dance floors across the country. Baby Anne has pounded out 14 Mix Cds, all of which have charted on the Billboard Soundscan Electronic Top 50 album chart from 1999's "BassQueen in the Mix" to last year's release, "Beauty of The Beats". Baby Anne is currently on tour promoting her latest CD release, "Disturbing the Beats". I attended this year's Ultra Music Festival, in Miami. I was instantly excited about the festival after learning The Prodigy was performing, but also I took this as an opportunity to explore all the different realms of electronic music. I saw quite a few artists: Santigold, The Ting Tings, BT, Roni Size Reprazent, Deadmau5, Carl Cox, ATB, Infected Mushroom, Above & Beyond, Cut Copy, The Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, The Prodigy, Simian Mobile Disco, Dirty South, Paul Oakenfold, Fedde Le Grand, Danny Tenaglia, Uberzone, Dynamix II, Ill Collaboration, and several others I can't think of right now.... I didn't really care to see Tiesto, and I saw Paul Van Dyk back in December in Orlando. I made a remix of my friend DJ Vile's unreleased track (as of April 2, 2009), "Undertones." I hope you enjoy it, I've been really into dance music as of late.
