The nu metal revival is alive and well in 2025, so much so, that iconic bands from that era are returning to delight long-term fans, while gaining a whole new audience who have yet to experience them. One such band is Northamptonshire, UK's Defenestration. A five-piece who were active between 1999 – 2004, releasing three studio albums (One Inch God – 2001 / Ray Zero – 2003 / For Us it Ends When We Drown – 2004) and one split EP, (Year of the Slug with Scurge – 2002). Not only that, but they also toured all over the world with the likes of Raging Speedhorn, Napalm Death, Biffy Clyro, The Wildhearts, Skindred, and so many more iconic bands. So popular were they, that they opened the Wembley Arena leg of the 2001 'Tattoo the Planet Tour'. A set of shows that included Cradle of Filth, Static-X, Biohazard, Slayer and Pantera. Twenty years after their last live performance as Defenestration, the original members reunited for a ‘one-off' performance. Supporting Raging Speedhorn, the show was to raise money for record producer Russ Russell who was unable to work due to illness. This would be followed by another benefit gig for Russ Russell later in August 2024, Defenestration's first headline show since 2004. The itch was back, and another set of shows with Raging Speedhorn all but confirmed that there was a desire for Defenestration to return as an active band. Which is where we find ourselves now. Defenestration has reformed, is under new management, and is in the process of solidifying their legacy, while looking to the future too. This is what we discuss with vocalist Gen Tasker, getting excited about what the future might bring, while also spending plenty of time look back at their immense history too. It's a heavyweight special today as we're joined by Ireland's top man in the showbiz division, undefeated Dublin banger Thomas ‘The Bomber' Carty. Carty was on with us three years ago as a 1-0 pro and since then his picked up some momentum. He's fought at the O2 in London, the Nottingham Arena, Wembley Arena and York Hall in the UK. And he's managed to fulfil part one of the pro dream by boxing on huge cards back home – twice at the 3Arena on the Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron cards, and a trip out west to fight alongside his Celtic Warrior brothers – and manager Dillian Whyte – in Castlebar, Co Mayo. He's also won a belt in the form of the BUI Celtic title and oh, he started a business too. Next up, on September 20, is another outing at Dublin's 3Arena, this time supporting another boxer who's getting a homecoming in the shape of Callum Walsh. Argentina's Jonathan Exequiel Vergara, who's won six and lost one so far, will be in the opposite corner on what's sure to be a fun night at the fights. With the 6ft 4in southpaw back on another major card at the 3Arena, we ask if there's any truth to the rumour that it's in the venue's contract that if there's no Carty, there's no party. We also look ahead to the undercard featuring the Craig O'Brien v Edward Donovan and Emmet Brennan v Kevin Cronin derby fights, and upcoming heavyweight slobberknockers featuring his sparring partners Anthony Joshua (v Daniel Dubois) and Tyson Fury (v Oleksandr Usyk II). Sebastian, Remington, and Emerson from Palaye Royale were nice enough to stop by the station before their show earlier this week. After playing three songs for the staff, they hopped into the studio with me to talk about the band. I had seen on X that Remington said that Songs For Sadness was very personal to him. He spoke about how his mother's illness has really affected each of them, who are brothers. Being on the road, and leaving their mother is always hard. This was a very touching part of the interview. I wish nothing but the best for "Mama Royale". The guys talked about the dichotomy of how Palaye Royale writes songs. Sebastian said Remington brings a lot to the lyrics, Emerson is good on the piano even though he's the drummer, and each of them bring something different. "We had eighty songs - for the upcoming album - so we narrowed them down to ten" Remington told me. He also said "If there's not a deadline, I will tinker with it" when talking about recording songs. They also talked about the success they've found overseas. Over here in the States, they've opened for so many bands but they're looking to do a headlining tour of their own. As a matter of fact, they're playing Wembley Arena in November. Sebastian said Gene Simmons gave them some great advice early on, which they still use to this day. The band actually started out on the Disney channel. They talked about the difference between playing Disney shows, and then going off on their own for shows. They went from big crowds to playing to empty rooms. I was shocked to hear that the guys were hockey players, as their family has roots in Canada. I didn't think we'd be talking about that during this interview!

The Large is a perfect example of the sort of figure we want to talk about on No Tags. She's been a savvy behind-the-scenes operator for over 15 years, coming of age in London's late ‘00s DIY clubbing era as a promoter, DJ, radio host and blogger. It was in the early part of the next decade, however, that she came into her own at Mixpak, the New York-based label that did more than any to connect the dots between the Caribbean, the UK and US in the 2010s. As label manager, Suze worked with Vybz Kartel, Murlo, Jubilee, Palmistry and more – but none made as seismic an impact as Popcaan, whose first two albums had Suze at the helm. Her crowning glory however, came in the summer of 2016 when Mixpak (and a weighty extended crew) triumphed in London's Wembley Arena at Red Bull's flagship Culture Clash event, to a global viewing audience of millions. As we find out in this episode, Suze was at the heart of that success, organising hundreds of exclusive dubplates and guest appearances to leverage their soundclash victory, including Spice, Popcaan, J Hus, Tony Matterhorn, Sneakbo, Kranium and Drake. We spoke to Suze about her decade in NYC, the mechanics of releasing music in 2024, the inside scoop on Culture Clash, dancehall's historical relationship with the US-UK press machine, the emergence of Latin America and Korea as global pop music forces, the difference between drunk crowds and ketamine crowds, and much, much more. Thanks for listening to No Tags. Gary Numan is about to set out on a UK acoustic tour, some of it in churches and one date in a cathedral. He talks here - from the Scottish estate house he's just bought – about some of the first shows he saw and what he's learnt about live performance. This includes ... … the peculiar effect of seeing Nazareth at the Rainbow in 1973. … the fate of the £5 note he'd asked Queen to autograph. … why he doesn't talk onstage, and why that's about to change. … what musicians take for granted. … the church that insisted on his lyrics before they let him perform there. … what happened when he dodged the security for Bowie at Wembley Arena. .. what's involved in creating a “relentless” live act. … a fondness for the Monkees and Marc Bolan and the secret of his 1981 Bogart hat. Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album earned him a new generation of fans upon its release in 1983. But the accompanying tour didn't kick off until the next calendar year. Dubbed “From A Piano Man to An Innocent Man,” the shows were unlike any other Billy had mounted until this point. The core band was augmented with backup singers and a horn section. And, with a handful of new hit songs, older concert staples were no longer in the sets. While some accounts show a rocky start, the band eventually hit its stride. Today, the production is well-documented thanks to a televised show from Wembley Arena in the UK that was broadcast live. Thanks to our research and contributions from friends of the podcast, we're bringing you a much more detailed look at the An Innocent Man tour. We'll look at tour dates, typical setlists, and reviews of the tour that outline its evolution in nearly 70 shows over 6 months. Join us as we dig deep into Billy Joel's From A Piano Man to An Innocent Man Tour of 1984. My guest today is multi-award-winning stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. Born in Edgware London, to a Punjabi Sikh family, he was in his mid-twenties when he first tried stand-up. Five years later he became the first British act to perform at the Caribbean Comedy Festival in Trinidad. Since then he has been a guest panellist on 8 out of 10 Cats, performed twice at Live at the Apollo, and is one of the most memorable contestants on the hit show Taskmaster, having appeared in season 3. In 2017 he became the first British Asian stand-up comic to sell out Wembley Arena and two years later this record-breaking show was made into an Amazon Prime special, and released worldwide.Since 2021, he has been the host of the hit podcast Paul Chowdhry's PudCast, in which he interviews comedians, and my guest is about to start a month-long run at the Edinburgh festival. Synth pioneer Gary Numan was overwhelmingly bashed by critics upon his surge to the top of the UK charts in the early 80s. Music writers may not have been ready for Numan's futuristic sound, but fans surely were. By the time he decided to take a hiatus from touring, he was doing multiple nights at Wembley Arena, not to mention opening doors for acts such as The Human League, Depeche Mode, and OMD. This week, we're joined by artist Matt Gondek to dive into all things Numan, especially his new wave classic “Cars”. If you like the show, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe.
