The goal of meditation is to free ourselves from suffering of the affliction we experience in our life. To see clearly what life is, we have to polish the lens that we look through.  Understanding comes from insight rather than studying or intellectual reflection.  The eightfold noble path leads to liberation through insight.  As soon as you see what this is, you free yourself.  The liberation is in the seeing. In order to see, we have to pay wise attention

Historically it is said that after his elightenment experience, The Buddha's first discourse was defined as the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma. He offered the first teaching of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Noble Path to five fellow seekers, who at first denied him an audience...but after noticing something different in him, sat and listened. They became the first Sangha; the community. These Truths are the very essence and core of the Buddhadharma which asks us to return to them time and time again, taking refuge in the lived experience of what they offer: a way to perceive and participate in the great reality. So, understanding and practice leads to wisdom, and wisdom leads to actualization...to make it real.

Author & showrunner Jonathan Ames returns to the show to celebrate his new novel, The Wheel Of Doll (Mulholland Books)! We get into how Lee Child inadvertently led him into writing about a down-on-his-luck PI named Happy Doll, how this new book builds on 2021's A Man Called Doll, his love of crime/mystery fiction and what he's learned about the form from re-re-re-reading masters like Richard Stark/Donald Westlake. We also talk about the Buddhist influences in The Wheel Of Doll (& in Jonathan's life), whether people can change, why he tweaked Happy's LA setting to mess with reality a little, and what it means to set a character along a new path (if not the Eightfold Noble Path). Plus, we discuss his recent binge-watch of Vikings, the principle of Engagementism, his writing advice (set reasonable goals), and plenty more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, I entered and remained in the first absorption (jhāna), which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. Could that be the path to awakening?' The Sangha discuss leaving victimhood behind and becoming a winner by following the Eightfold Noble Path or Eightfold Noble Method of which the first four steps are right viewing (samma ditthi), right mindfulness (samma sati), right effort (samma vayama), and right attitude (samma sankappa). These steps are practiced as four mutually reinforcing skills: remembering to look (samma sati); investigating or “checking out” the hindrances or unwholesome thoughts (samma ditthi); changing from an unwholesome state to a wholesome state by throwing out the hindrances and gladdening the mind (samma vayama); these three skills are like dance steps and constantly reinforce one another until we begin to develop a new attitude: celebrating achievement; becoming a winner; becoming a lion (samma sankappa). The four skills working togther produce right unification of mind (samma samādh). This is the Buddha's method. #mindfulness #meditation #enlightenment See the video version of this call on YouTube. ►YouTube Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptk9hCIYakk Find the full video chats on the Dhammarato Dhamma YouTube channel. ►YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/DhammaratoDhamma Weekly Sangha calls, everyone is welcome! ►The Sangha US - https://join.skype.com/uyYzUwJ3e3TO ►The Sangha UK - https://join.skype.com/w6nFHnra6vdh To meet Dhamma friends or volunteer to help spread the Dhamma, join our discord. ►Discord - https://discord.gg/epphTGY To unite the growing interest in Buddhism with the hundreds of Buddhist wats in the West, we are in the process of starting the Open Sangha Foundation. We will compare “free speech,” as defended in the US Constitution, with Right Speech as promoted in the Eightfold Noble Path of the Buddhist practice. Right Speech is divided into four components: abstaining from false speech, abstaining from slanderous speech, abstaining from harsh (divisive) speed, and abstaining from idle chatter. Speech and the written word are immensely powerful in creating wisdom or destruction. In this podcast, we will talk about how to develop and discern our speech so that we can engage in non-hatred at all times, opening the door to a humane treatment of others and ourselves.

The first path factor of the Buddha’s Eightfold Noble Path is right view, also known as wise understanding. Though right view is the first of the Eightfold path factors, it represents the fruition of the succeeding seven path factors. Right view and right intention (the second path factor) together encompass supreme training in wisdom; a training designed to awaken the faculty of penetrative understanding—that which knows things as they truly are. The Buddha defined right view as understanding dukkha—the inherent unsatisfactoriness of all experience—its origin, cessation and the path leading to its cessation. He also defined right view as wisely comprehending Dependent Origination—the Buddha's topology of mind and the cognitive-affective perceptual mechanisms that cause us to misapprehend self and world as separate, autonomous and permanent. The Buddha taught that wrong view is the greatest source of unwholesome mind states and by extension, unwholesome decisions and behaviors. The fruition of right view is a heart-mind liberated from avidyā, the delusion of suffering.

In this episode we examine the Four Four Noble Path in relation to emotions. Reactive emotions are the inevitable human response to suffering, in particular as a defensive mechanism to reinforce the notion of a separate, individual "self". The Buddha in first teaching relayed his enlightenment insight simply as "I teach suffering and the end of suffering". In the Four Fold Noble Truths he 1) identifies the problem: suffering, 2) points out the root cause of suffering: emotional reaction from habituated patterns, 3) offers the solution to suffering: disassembling the conditioning that underlies the misperception of self and other, and 4) offers a way to effectively implement the solution: a way of freedom from conditioned response known as the Eightfold Noble Path.
