There is no objectively 'right' of 'wrong' way how we perceive and experience the breath in Ānāpānasati (Mindfulness of In & Out Breath) meditation. Perception of internal phenomena is entirely subjective. However, there are ways of perceiving and feeling the breath that are conducive to deepening our samādhi & insight, and there are other ways of perceiving that have the opposite effect. Therefore, when doing breath meditation, we deliberately cultivate those perceptions and feelings that are helpful for us to deepen the meditiaton. The Buddha in particular advised to feel and experience our whole physical body when doing Anapanasati, and to cultivate contentment, gladness, joy, rapture, bliss and happiness with every inbreath and every outbreath. Breath is the first thing we reach for in crisis and the last thing we notice in the rush of daily life. This conversation dives into a living lineage of breathwork—from the roots of Anapanasati to the modern, transformative practice of conscious connected breathing—and shows how a simple, continuous inhale-exhale can change how we heal, love, and lead.Visit Anthony's website: Alchemy of BreathWe sit down with Anthony Abognano of Alchemy of Breath to unpack his facilitator training and the inner journey at its core. Anthony explains why students write autobiographies, examine birth imprints, and practice early in real-world settings, so they can hold space for grief, trauma, and even end-of-life with steadiness and compassion. We contrast count-based pranayama with surrender-led connected breathing, explore the physiology of CO2 shifts and frontal lobe quieting, and map how speaking from stillness creates safety in intense sessions. Stories weave it together: couples who defuse conflict with ten shared breaths, classrooms that settle after recess, practitioners who turn personal wounds into gifts for their communities.Along the way, we reconnect breath to body, mind, and heart, integrating mindfulness, embodiment, and mythic frameworks like the hero's journey. Anthony's billion-breath vision—ten people inviting ten more across nine waves—feels less like a slogan and more like a blueprint for global nervous system care. If you're a therapist, coach, educator, or curious breather, you'll leave with practical ways to start: try a short connected sequence, write a few pages of your life arc, and test the ten-breath reset with someone you love.Take a moment to breathe with us, then share this episode with one person who could use a calmer nervous system today. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us: what changed for you after ten conscious breaths?Support the showCertify To Teach Mindfulness: Certify.MindfulnessExercises.com Email: Sean@MindfulnessExercises.com Mindfulness Exercises with Sean Fargo is a practical, grounded mindfulness podcast for people who want meditation to actually help in real life. Here is a guided meditation drawing from the first tetrad of the mindfulness of breathing practice. Working with primarily the breath and body, this meditation is very grounding, and gives one an opportunity to work with using the breath as an anchor. We also get a good look at impermanence, noticing how every breath feels different, and how the sensations in the body change.

Ajahn Dhammasiha guides us through a Buddhist meditation on Mindfulness of the In and Out Breath (ānāpānasati). He specially emphasizes the following points: 1. Feeling the whole physical body with every breath. 2. Calming and relaxing all bodily tensions with every breath. 3. Enjoying the meditation. Developing feelings of gladness, rapture and bliss with every breath. 4. Brightening the mind with every breath. 5. Though we're calm, we're not going to sleep. Becoming more aware, more awake, more mindful with every breath. 6. We're not meditating to get anything, we're meditation to let go. Letting go with every breath. 7. After the bell, Ajahn Dhammasiha encourages us to use the same techniques for our walking meditation.WebsiteOur Spotify PlaylistsNewsletterDhammagiri Youtube ChannelPics#meditation #buddhistmeditation #guidedmeditation #breathmeditation #anapanasati #mindfulness #sati
Mindfulness of the In-and-Out-Breath, Ānāpānasati, was the favourite meditation object of the Buddha himself. He has given us very comprehensive and detailed instructions how to develop this form of meditation. However, many meditators, often even those practising regularly for many years, are not fully aware, or at least do not really apply, the instructions as provided by the Buddha. To encourage everyone to receive the full results of their Breath Meditation, Ajahn Dhammasiha goes through all 16 steps of Mindfulness of Breathing, as expounded by the Buddha; e.g. in Ānāpānasati Sutta, Majjhima Nikāya/Middle Length Discourses, No. 118Each of the four Tetrads develops one of the Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) (i) BODY (KĀYA) (ii) FEELINGS (VEDANĀ) (iii) CITTA (MIND) (iv) DHAMMA (TRUTH) [i] 1. Many of us were introduced to meditating by breath counting at first, then moved into simply watching the breath, and then, at some point, even that fell away. There are many techniques used to focus and settle the mind and body. As “introductory” as breath counting seems, it is a very powerful way to enter the present moment.Read the Journal while listening

A reading of the Anapanasati Sutta: Mindfulness of Breathing - MN 118 This reading is an amalgam of translations by Bhante Sujato, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Thanisarro Bhikkhu - compiled and edited by Ayya Jitindriya. The Ānāpānasati Sutta (Pāli), "Breath-Mindfulness Discourse," Majjhima Nikaya 118, is a discourse that details the Buddha's instruction on using awareness of the breath (anapana) as an initial focus for meditation. The sutta includes sixteen steps of practice, and groups them into four tetrads, associating them with the four satipatthanas (placings of mindfulness). According to American scholar monk, Thanissaro Bhikkhu, this sutta contains the most detailed meditation instructions in the Pali Canon. The method of practising Ānāpānasati , as explained in the Ānāpānasati -sutta of the Majjhima Nikàya, is complete in itself. One can understand and practise this more easily than methods found in other suttas.
