We get into why renunciation isn't about denying yourself pleasure but finding something better than it, how a harsh, adversarial relationship with practice quietly wrecks people (and how to soften it without losing rigor), the role of metta and the brahmaviharas in setting up insight, and the “world is a flame” teaching from the Aditta-pariyaya Sutta. We close on soul-making, why desire itself was never the problem, and the difference between things fading as you see their emptiness versus a fuller freedom that doesn't need anything to fade at all.Timestamps:0:00 — Who Wystan is and his practice background1:13 — Why practice jhana at all3:43 — Renunciation as deeply pleasurable, not deprivation8:26 — Calming the adversarial relationship with your own practice18:31 — Is metta a “lesser” practice than jhana? The development of concentration, the Buddha teaches, is the heart of the path. The Buddha's concentration, the concentration he learned to develop and then taught is known as jhana. We develop jhana, as the Buddha did, by the practice of mindfulness of breathing. In doing so, it is in our best interests to focus our efforts on developing the 'qualities of jhana.' This is the first in a series of talks given by Peter Doobinin in November 2025 on "The Jhana Qualities." "Over there are the roots of trees; over there, empty dwellings. Practice jhana, monks. Don't be heedless. Don't later fall into regret. This is our message to you." (MN 19)

In this “Best Of” episode, we revisit a powerful conversation where Michael breaks down the fundamentals of Jhana practice (the 4 stages of deep concentration). He explores the inner “maps” that guide absorption and offers insight into how practitioners can move into increasingly profound states. As stillness deepens, the familiar reference points we use to understand our lives begin to fall away, opening the door to a very different kind of awareness. Recorded on May 18, 2014 at the Kayagatasati Sutta during a workshop in Madison, Wisconsin. In this episode, we explore jhana, the higher states of concentration. Moving beyond ordinary beautiful consciousness, jhana represents deeply refined, purified states of mind that arise only through dedicated meditation. We break down what jhana truly means, why it cannot be captured by English words like “ecstasy” or “absorption,” and how it functions by burning away the five mental hindrances. The talk explains the two types of jhana—samatha-based concentration and vipassana-based insight—and how each examines the mind in different ways. We also look at the five jhana factors, how they support concentration, and how each one directly opposes a corresponding hindrance. Finally, we clarify the distinction between jhana, jhana factors, and jhana consciousness, and why understanding these differences matters for progress on the path.YouTube Video LinkYouTube Channel Link Website:www.satipatthana.caDonations and Memberships
