A third-year student from Colorado, Emma Weber was among the UVA contingent on the United States swim team last summer at the Olympic Games in Paris, where she won a gold medal, and she competed last month at the World Aquatics 25m Championships in Hungary.
One of the most amusing moments during the opening week of competition at Paris 2024 occurred in the pool.2024年巴黎奥运会开幕周最有趣的时刻之一发生在游泳赛场上。It saw a middle-aged volunteer dressed in colorful trunks dive into the water to receive a lost swimming cap before lapping up applause from the crowd. The cap was believed to have been the property of Team USA swimmer Emma Weber. However, when the camera panned to the American, Weber was still wearing a cap. This is because Olympic swimmers typically wear multiple caps when competing. But why? Why do Olympic swimmers wear more than one swimming cap? You might think that the simple answer is: In case one of them falls off. That is partly true but not quite the full story. There are two main reasons why Olympic swimmers wear two - or sometimes more - caps. One is that wearing multiple caps can help to stabilise an athlete's goggles. As well as adding additional tightness, a second swimming cap can help cover up the exposed straps around the goggles, thus making the athlete more streamline and reducing drag. Most athletes will sit their goggles on a swimming cap made from latex, before adding a silicone cap on top. The friction between the silicone and the latex should, in theory, make it much less likely for the top cap to fall off.
Coaching can be a powerful tool to transfer learning to improving on-the-job performance. However, it is often challenging to scale coaching to an entire organization, unless we use technology. I enjoyed testing out a new chatbot coaching tool called Coach M, which was developed by Lever - Transfer Learning. In this episode, I speak with the CEO of Lever about what it looks like to have a chatbot coach and the impact it can have on learning in the workplace. Emma Weber is CEO/Founder Lever – Transfer of Learning. Emma, a learning transfer authority, made it her mission in life to make a difference to learning transfer worldwide. Frustrated by the amount of learning which is wasted when it fails to make it across the knowing–doing gap Emma created the Turning Learning into Action™ methodology to solve that problem. This methodology is deployed throughout 20 countries and in 12 languages by a talented team and Coach M, a conversational intelligence chatbot. Coach M is challenging the industry's thinking of what's possible in learning transfer. Emma shares her passion and expertise through her writing – her first book 'Turning Learning into Action: a proven methodology for effective transfer of learning' was published by Kogan Page in 2014 and is excited to have her 1st co-written ATD Association for Talent Development) press book ‘Designing Virtual Learning for Application & Impact' published in 2023. Some skills are difficult to practice in a realistic environment. Having effective difficult conversations is one of them. Denise Meyerson of MCI Solutions worked with a provider in disability services sector in Australia to support the onboarding of 165 new local area coordinators spread across a wide geographic area. Emma Weber is an expert in learning transfer. This is actually the second great conversation with Emma on the Learning While Working podcast; the first conversation focused on the 70:20:10 learning model and learning transfer. This interview starts with Emma giving an overview of her approach to learning transfer. One of the key features of her approach is what she calls ‘learning breaks’, which are coaching conversations that focus on personal accountability for making changes and reflection. In the interview, Emma talks about how she struggled to find the right technology to support her approach to learning transfer. She is now using two platforms that work together: an action planning tool called Turning Learning into Action and a chatbot built with the Mobile Coach platform. The Turning Learning into Action platform is free. What she achieved is a great example of using digital technologies to automate the learning process. It might be not a perfect replacement for a personal learning transfer coach, but it is scaled and affordable. To go along with the podcast series we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. To go along with the podcast series on How artificial intelligence is changing the way L&D is working, we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. As an industry, we like to think we're getting better and better at delivering effective learning solutions at the point of need. But how often do these interventions actually translate into behavioural change in the workplace? Learning transfer professional Emma Weber is our guest on this episode of the Learning While Working podcast. Emma talks about the need to focus on the whole of the 70:20:10 model, and why the '10' is too often overlooked.
Time is running out and you've got so much more content to squash in to the training course ... what can you do? Easy, just drop the action planning session you have penciled in for the end of the day! According to Emma Weber, expert in learning transfer and author of two books on the subject, this would be exactly the wrong thing to do. In this episode - the longest Trainer Tools podcast by a country mile - Emma explains how action planning done well can be the key tool in ensuring knowledge and skill acquired on a training course is transferred into the workplace and drives real life proper performance improvement! Maybe I should have split this up into two parts, but there didn't seem to be a natural break ... so I didn't. I know it's long, but I think it's worth it!
