Alexandra is currently Head of Corporate Accounts at Angle Auto Finance, the largest independent auto financier in Australia. She manages strategic partnerships with some of the country's biggest dealer groups and plays a key role in the company's growth journey. Before joining Angle, Alexandra built her automotive career with BMW Group Australia, where she rose to the role of Area Manager. Interestingly, her professional journey began not in business but in music—she studied classical bassoon performance at the Sydney Conservatorium and spent her early career as a freelance musician. In our conversation, we talk about Alexandra's upbringing as one of four sisters in a vibrant, achievement-oriented household, her transition from the world of orchestras and auditions to the F&I office of a BMW dealership, and how that unexpected step sparked a fulfilling corporate career. We explore how she learned to create opportunities by asking bold questions, why she now feels more creatively expressed in business than she ever did as a musician, and how her roles in both retail and head office gave her valuable insight into the dealer perspective. We also reflect on the impact of becoming a parent and how it shifted her focus from chasing roles to becoming the kind of person she wants her daughter to look up to.Connect with AlexandraLinkedInAbout AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! We decide to make a leap for it and sometimes we make it and have a good landing and sometimes we miss and land in the water. An alternative approach which is not open to frogs but is available to us is to use the equivalent of a gangplank to traverse more securely and predictably from our current situation to where we believe we want to be. We build this gangplank by expanding our current lily pad or role in the direction of our strengths until it reaches our desired destination or until we have more information about ourselves or the desired role or a mixture of both and we decide to alter our course. This episode is the first of two episodes that will help you to start expanding your role in the direction of your strengths and your desired next position or lily pad. I hope you find it useful. About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! Fortunately, I've learned to be kind to myself and to forgive younger me for the jaw-dropping lack of experience and awareness I displayed on occasion. I've since reframed these excruciating memories as reassuring evidence of my ability to grow. Ten years ago, almost to the day, I landed back in the UK from New Zealand. Looking back, it's easy to simplify things with hindsight, but that moment marked the start of a significant transformation for me. I had begun the process of self-actualization.As Daniel Pink articulated in Drive, we're driven by autonomy, mastery, and meaningful work. For me, those drivers align perfectly with the BIGR framework: belief, intentionality, a growth mindset, and repetition. That's what has helped me grow—and that's what I believe can help you grow too.To become your best self, to self-actualize and fill out your biggest Russian doll, you need to get "BIGR": Belief, Intentionality, Growth Mindset, and Repetition.Last week, in Part 1, I introduced the concept of growing into your biggest Russian doll—of becoming the fullest version of yourself—and teased that I'd explain the name B.I.G. Iain. In this episode, Part 2, we dive deeper into what it takes to grow BIGR and what the name BIG Iain represents. Back in 2006, I accepted a role within BMW Group that required moving my family from the UK to Singapore. My wife and I have two children who at the time, were aged 10 and 6.In the weeks leading up to our move, I often found myself explaining the decision to colleagues: I'd say, “I felt I needed to get out of my comfort zone.”Fast forward to early 2007, and there I was in my new office in Singapore, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, trying to figure out how things worked—and feeling very uncomfortable. I remember thinking, “This is what they mean by a comfort zone!”Around the same time, I was reminded of something I'd learned on a management training program in South Africa: “Your responsibility as a manager is to produce results and grow the people.”In Episode 197, I shared why growing people matters so much. Today, I want to build on that by introducing a metaphor for growth—one that has shaped my thinking ever since. And next week, I'll explore how we can use this metaphor to grow ourselves and those we lead and care about.About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! In last week's Side Mirror episode "Produce results and grow the people", I talked about a significant experience during my leadership journey that took place in November 2006 when I was fortunate enough to participate in a leadership programme led by Ed Eppley.I suggested why as managers we need to not only produce results but also grow the people and shared a formula Skill x Effort = Results that demonstrated one of the ways we can grow our people so that they can produce more without having to work harder. Working harder isn't a bad thing necessarily but nor is it a long term sustainable option.I build on that episode this week and share how that formula contributed to the creation of the Fulfilling Performance framework and explain what we mean when we describe Fulfilling Performance as a function of four fundamental contributing factors with effort applied.About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Check out Tim Urban's post: Your life in weeksLearn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. With that unique experience, he started the first communication consultancy specifically supporting start-up and electric vehicle brands, initially creating the PR and Communications function for INEOS Automotive and their Grenadier, and then as Chief Communications Officer for Volta Trucks. And more recently in the same role for Automobili Pininfarina, with their all-electric Battista hypercar – one of the fastest and most powerful road cars ever built. In a recent Aquilae Academy peer mentoring session, team members were discussing how leaders can make time for themselves to do what the author Cal Newport calls "Deep work" when it seems that as soon as they walk through the door everyone wants to speak to them.On a call with a woman I am mentoring, she asked how can I manage all the demands on me without becoming stressed and overwhelmed. When I launched our Fulfilling Performance newsletter, Release the handbrake! on Substack, a couple of readers were quick to ask how Fulfilling Performance can help us to manage the barrage of demands on our time.It seems it's about time for a Side Mirror about time and how we can use the Fulfilling Performance paradigm to manage it. In this series of Side Mirror episodes I am going to show you how to apply those four Guiding Principles: Know why, Be clear, Equip yourself, and Support others to manage your time more effectively. In this episode I'll start with some helpful paradigms. In our upcoming episodes I'll introduce each of the Guiding Principles in turn and explain how they apply here.About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! After an accomplished tenure with General Motors that took her to five distinct locations within and outside of the US, she's says it's time to pause and reflect. The desire to be rooted in community has led her to the decision to stay in Switzerland as she looks to enter the next chapter of her professional career. With ten years experience managing the complexities of the automotive industry and her innate ability to adapt to new environments and challenges, she is looking toward new horizons and hoping to gain new opportunities, maybe even beyond automotive. In our conversation Alex shares that she was a good student who initially aspired to a medical career. She found a way to use her problem solving skills in a medical device startup until a family friend suggested General Motors were hiring.A school trip to Europe had shown her she liked to travel and so GM's requirement for candidates to be prepared to go wherever they said was an attraction rather than a drawback.Alex learned how to influence people at dealerships and back at Head Quarters until one of her managers took her with him into the Aftersales business. She took ownership of the opportunity to manage the Autozone account and achieved success growing the value of that relationship. She brought senior leaders of both businesses together to recognise the value of the partnership. That initiative got her recognised and won her a new mentor. When the time was right, she pushed for an international opportunity and landed an amazing experience in Shanghai in a joint venture with mostly Chinese colleagues. After a brief spell back in Michigan, Alex was excited to join GM's re entry to Europe which was like being in a start up within a big corporation. Once again she got to deploy and develop her skills to set up an aftersales function from scratch.I loved getting to know Alex and hearing her story. I hope that the insights she shares can help you or someone you lead and care about. Maybe this interview can unlock some new relationships and opportunities for Alex in Switzerland!
