Hosts Dennis Strazulo and Tami Larson sit down backstage with a divergent group of talent at Sound Summit 2024, the annual music festival atop majestic Mt. Tamalpais across the Bay from San Francisco.Fresh off her releasing her debut album, Wine on Venus, and her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, rising Nashville star and Gibson Guitar endorsed phenom, Grace Bowers (Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge), chats about how she was influenced by BB King and her humble rise to prominence - from playing in her bedroom to appearing with Dolly Parton and Tyler Childers - and explains why she is not a prodigy! Demonstrating she has a mind and soul beyond her 18 years of age, Grace expresses what drives her - a profound hope and passion that her music makes people feel something - whether it makes them dance or feel an emotion. Super-soulful, Lech Wierzynski, leader of The California Honeydrops, who like Grace Bowers, returned to his Bay Area roots performing at Sound Summit - the band's first stop on their national tour promoting its new album, Keep on Diggin' - discusses the band's improvisational influences, the role of Spotify in the new music industry landscape, and the impact of the mentors who shaped his trumpet skills, and provides a peek into his iPod sourcing the playlist for the band's touring road trips, introducing listeners to an array of obscure, delightful music to add to their own playlists. Multi-talented James Wallace - aka, Skyway Man, delves into the eclectic inspirations of his music, originally sourced from his random discovery of mysterious letters in an abandoned motorcycle shop in North Carolina, filled with esoteric and UFO-related content, touching on the brotherhood of aliens and ascension to a fourth dimension. Wallace shares how his passion for storytelling through song remains unwavering, providing a glimpse into the mind of Skyway Man and an example of the resilience and creativity that drives artists to keep sharing their gifts with the world.CreditsSweet Little AngelPerformed by B.B. Her unique sound and gorgeous musical style left us begging for more, so we asked Helena a few more questions: You said your father was a major musical influence in your life. Was he your main teacher?Yes actually, my mother too. My dad is a guitar player and my mom plays piano. I got more of 60’s & 70’s rock n roll/folk/latin influence from my father, and my soul/jazz/funk influence from my mothers musical palette. They both were very busy growing up so my main musical teacher became the internet, mainly youtube. How long have you been playing guitar and do you play any other instruments?I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. I also enjoy playing a bit of piano. How old were you when you wrote your first song?I was around 12 years old when I wrote my first song. No recordings exist but I have the lyrics written and saved on paper. It’s interesting to me to read my 12 year old perspective on friendship & loss. The song is titled Mind Games. What do you love about being a musician?I love the freedom to express myself the most. Writing music, performing it, recording it, & releasing it, is the way I process my life experiences. It is extremely cathartic for me to set my music free. It’s most natural for me to sing what I feel rather than saying what I feel, and it is exceptionally beautiful when a listener can relate or draw their own personal interpretation from the music I have shared. You have played in so many great venues including the House of Blues and the Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. What has been your favorite and why?My favorite has to be Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. I was performing at a small tent there called the Tea Tent where people sit on the floor and share cups of tea and conversations. I was performing with around 10 musicians & close friends of mine. The energy from them and the unexpectedly large crowd we drew is hard to put into words. It was a great example of how music can bring people together in the most positive way. What is your dream gig?My dream gig is opening for or sharing the stage with any one of my musical heroes who are still alive. To name a few: Lianne La Havas, Margaret Glaspy, Esperanza Spalding, Alice Phoebe Lou, Andy Shauf, The California Honeydrops, Paul Simon, & Joni Mitchell. For More Information:helenaholleranmusic.comInstagram: helenaholleranFacebook: helenaholleranSpotify: helenaholleranTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

Over the past ten years, the Oakland-based California Honeydrops have recorded seven successful albums but the Honeydrops have a well-established reputation for dynamic and memorable live performances. The 11 piece ensemble is known for a rootsy, jazzy, funky, “New Orleans Vibe,” but there’s more to the story. I recently had a chance to chat with the band’s sax player Johnny Bones about the band and its ability to ignite a live audience.
"Frank Sinatra discovered me at a nightclub called P.J.'s in Hollywood. It was 1962. He used to come in there a lot with all his big star friends. I was so nervous to see him. I've only had one idol in my life, and that was Frank Sinatra." - Trini Lopez Podcast Featuring Neil Diamond, Trini Lopez, Marcia Griffiths, Josh Rouse, Courtney John, Yukicito, The Avett Brothers, Matt Simons, The Village Callers, and the California Honeydrops! If you aren’t familiar with the California Honeydrops they are a 7 piece ensemble that started as a busking duo. It’s been 11 years since multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski and percussionist Ben Malament were two dudes in the Oakland subway system. Since then they have grown into that big band, put out 5 studio records, and 1 live one, opened for the likes of Bonnie Rait, BB King, Buddy Guy, and Dr.John. They blend several influences from Bay area R&B, funk, soul, to delta blues to so much more. This sonic pot pourri offers a great soundtrack to your day, and what must be an absolutely body shaking live performance. Show Notes: **First Song:** 00:45 – Call It Home **Interview Begins:** 04:43 **Extro Song:** 26:18 - Good Good Lovin' See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
