Spirituality became central to NiteshGor's life when, as a teenager, he founded a youth movement to campaign against the UK government's proposed forced closure of Bhaktivedanta Manor, a temple outside London that was purchased and gifted by George Harrison. Nitesh went on to create Avanti Schools Trust, a government-funded network of schools in the UK rooted in spirituality. He co-created the world's first equity index rooted in dharmic values, the Dow Jones Dharma Index, and now the Dharma Endowment Fund. We look at Risk Roulette, by Graham Ruddick. Risk Roulette: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Businesses Work and Others Fail reviewed This is an enjoyable and thought provoking book. It also used examples and case studies from paths less regularly travelled. This was a bit of a relief for the reviewer because sometimes you can almost do entrepreneurs bingo when the same anecdotes and inspirational examples tend to come up again and again. The pace is rapid, as the whole book comes in at under 200 pages. The tone is good too, informative and helpful, written in an accessible way. We enjoyed reading it and would definitely recommend it to other readers, both younger students and also people using it for college and to inform their own business ideas too. More about Risk Roulette Risk Roulette: The surprising reasons why some businesses work and others fail NEW BOOK: Interviews reveal lessons from sports, finance and iconic entrepreneurs to show how to make risk work for you Why This Book Matters: Explains why those who have a real understanding of how risk and reward works will succeed Shows why taking excessive risk is likely to end in disaster and that entrepreneurs are not the buccaneering risk-takers they are often portrayed as Features interviews and case studies from businesses including Marks & Spencer, Castore, and Deliveroo, as well as football, Formula 1 champions, and skydivers Written by award-winning journalist who has interviewed some of the world's leading business executives, financiers and sports people Business success requires taking a risk, or two. But have you ever bet the house on a seemingly good idea only for it to become a bad business decision? And why is that some business leaders seem to be able to take long shots, and still come up trumps? Now a fascinating new book Risk Roulette from leading journalist Graham Ruddick, reveals the surprising reasons why some businesses work, and others fail. As a journalist with the Telegraph, Guardian, The Times and now Business Leader, Graham Ruddick has spent more than fifteen years researching and interviewing leaders, including the founders and chief executives of some of the biggest businesses around the world. Through this series of exclusive interviews, he has found that there's a pivotal trait leaders have when it comes to success: they understand risk. Through a collection of thought-provoking stories, interviews and case studies from leaders in business, finance and sport, Ruddick reveals that risk isn't just about being risky and having a blasé attitude to responsibility. It's about understanding risk more broadly, from the level of risk involved in a decision and how to reduce it, to the difference between short-term and long-term risk. Risk Roulette is a highly entertaining and informative read which joins icons from the worlds of business, finance, journalism and sports who know how to make risk work for them and push the boundaries and reveals their tried and tested secrets so you too can elevate your business. We review The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm by Sally Percy. Sally Percy is a business journalist and editor, specialising in leadership and management. The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm, reviewed This is a good book in some ways, as it is always interesting when you get to learn about some companies that you perhaps have heard less about. At the same time, while reading the 15 case studies, we did wonder if there is some degree of confirmation bias going on. Is the common element that these companies are, or at have had success, rather than that they did anything particularly well. As Bill Gates said, to paraphrase, success is a lousy teacher. It makes you assume that the choices you made were awesome and, looking back, you did everything right. Some of the examples may age less well too. Elon Musk is included, which is, or rather would have been no surprise perhaps five years ago, whereas now it is hard to understand how relentlessly he is destroying his own reputation and actively turning people off buying his Tesla products among others. With the A24 example, it seemed like a narrative of a company growing, but how different is this arc of growth to that of Miramax? And we know that didn't turn out so well. We would have liked longer side bars, with a clearer exposition and explanation of why and what these particular people did that was disruptive or innovative, rather than simply growing and trying new sectors in which to make media content. It is an interesting and thought provoking read, but it is always a challenge to ensure that the profiles are not mere hagiography to the people featured. Was Elon really fearless, innovation, driven and daring, or merely a trustafarian tech bro, who is revealing his true, more insidious nature as time goes by. It would have been nice to have had a more critical analysis of how company X performed better than company Y for our tastes. Sally Percy is the author of new book The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm, published by Kogan Page on 03 September. Sally Percy is a business journalist and editor, specialising in leadership and management. She is also a leadership contributor to Forbes.com and a commercial copywriter, speechwriter and ghostwriter. The Disruptors Fearless, innovative, driven and daring. These are the qualities of a disruptor: a business that is willing to take risks to achieve incredible success. In The Disruptors, leading business journalist Sally Percy investigates the stories behind some of the world's most innovative businesses, who took unconventional and trailblazing approaches to overcome the competition and achieve success. Spotify, Nintendo, TikTok and A24. These are all businesses that have taken disruptive pathways to success and have redefined their industries. The Disruptors dives into the strategies behind these stories, offering valuable insights into innovative and daring entrepreneurship. See more book reviews here. Are we focused on adding more fuel to get the circular economy going – when, really, the problem is too much friction? Those terms stuck with me a few years ago, from a book helping people to get new ideas going, and succeeding, by looking more closely at the 'frictions' that create resistance. The book, The Human Element is written by organisational psychologist Loran Nordgren and David Schonthal, a specialist in entrepreneurship, design, and innovation. They say that most people working to create change focus on increasing the appeal of the idea itself – we're convinced that if we add enough value, people will say “yes.”' Whilst it's definitely helpful to ‘sell the sizzle' of our idea, to help move it forward, we tend to overlook the power of all the concerns, confusion, and other factors getting in the way of the change – the friction.Of course, fuel is necessary for success. Frictions, on the other hand, are difficult to spot. We are naturally convinced that our idea, our project, our new service, is the best thing since sliced bread. So it's hard for us to see what's getting in the way for our audience, customers, or investors. Understanding and overcoming frictions requires empathy. We have to see the world, and our idea within it, from the perspective of those affected.Over the last series of podcast episodes, we've talked about quite a few fuels and frictions relating to the circular economy. Reflecting on those conversations helped me see some recurring themes, including:Systems thinking, and the need for seeing a connected whole instead of separate parts, or sub-sectionsCulture, language and how we understand and interpret the circular economyMindsets – what's our worldview, and does this mean we're stuck in our ways?Information technology, especially ‘legacy' software systems. In this episode, I'm going to pull out some of the fuel and friction insights shared by our guests. Guest post by Sally Percy is the author of new book The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm, published by Kogan Page on 03 September. We will shortly be reviewing this book too. What's the secret to disruptive business success? Well, there's no denying that an ultra-powerful algorithm certainly helps. Take social media giant, TikTok, for example. It became a global phenomenon on the back of its powerful recommendation algorithm, which learns users' interests from their viewing habits and makes compelling, personalized recommendations that keep them hooked. The Disruptors, achieving disruptive business success Another disruptive business that has capitalized on algorithms is music streaming platform Spotify. Its highly effective algorithms analyse the listening habits of hundreds of millions of users, make connections based on historical listening behaviour, and then predict what individual listeners will want to hear in future. As a result, it delivers a highly personalized experience that listeners love. TikTok and Spotify are two of the groundbreaking businesses that I studied for my book, The Disruptors: How 15 Successful Businesses Defied the Norm. Along with the other businesses I researched, they can teach powerful lessons on achieving disruptive success. While investment in state-of-the-art technology is a common characteristic of disruptors, they also embrace these three critical strategies: Do what other businesses don't dare to do It's a risk to try to turn your product's greatest weakness into its greatest strength. But that's what casual footwear brand Crocs did with its foam-based shoes. Even Crocs' own inventors thought they were ugly. But would-be customers were willing to overlook the shoes' unusual appearance because of their sheer practicality and comfortable fit. So, the brand turned the unattractiveness of the shoes into a marketing advantage, using the strapline 'Ugly Can Be Beautiful' in an advertising campaign. Crocs has successfully established itself as a "love or hate" brand, which has enabled it to generate a huge amount of traction in the fashion marketplace and earn the enduring loyalty of consumers. Thanks to their iconic design, Crocs are instantly recognisable - even if they are not to everyone's taste. Execute a concept better than anyone else Home-sharing platform Airbnb was not the first website in the US to enable people to book short-term accommodation. But who needs to be the first mover when you can execute the concept better than anyone else? Two out of Airbnb's three co-founders, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, come from a design background. This helped enormously when it came to building the company's distinctive brand, which is grounded in the concept of community. The third co-founder, Nathan Blecharczyk, studied computer science at Harvard and, from the outset, made clever use of technology to help Airbnb gain a competitive edge. By developing a better product and a more distinctive brand, Airbnb has overtaken its rivals. In fact, the concept of staying in Airbnb accommodation has become so well known that 'Airbnb' is even used as a verb by people looking to rent space. Tackle big problems Disruptive businesses like to tackle big problems - and problems don't get much bigger than climate change. Electric car maker Tesla is tackling this challenge head-on, through its self-proclaimed mission to build a world "powered by solar energy, running on batteries and transported by electric vehicles". Climate change isn't the only problem that Tesla is trying to address, however. It is also trying to make car travel safer through automation, reducing the number of deaths in road traffic accidents. Specifically, Tesla has plans to launch the so-called 'robotaxi', an autonomous car that is able to drive itself completely without human intervention. What makes a disruptor? While disruptive businesses will inevitably share some similarities, the business model of no two disru...

KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding how to provide their organisation with greater value and impact is a big concern for L&D professionals. 75% of people said their work leader had more of an influence on their mental health than their life partner does. Experiential training for leaders enables them to better understand how their behaviour and expectations impact those who work for them. The fact that future generations look at work differently is having a huge impact on L&D. When people are offered face-to-face training, they feel invested in. Gamification isn´t working but simulations are. If you can´t see a measurable change (ROI) the chances are you should not be doing it. Content has to be carefully crafted to be relevant. BEST MOMENTS 'I would make sure that we're really involving and holding accountable the leaders.' 'How do we help organizations manage stability, the sense of belonging and psychological safety that we need.' 'Content only matters to you if it's relevant somehow.' Coaching can be a powerful tool to transfer learning to improving on-the-job performance. However, it is often challenging to scale coaching to an entire organization, unless we use technology. I enjoyed testing out a new chatbot coaching tool called Coach M, which was developed by Lever - Transfer Learning. In this episode, I speak with the CEO of Lever about what it looks like to have a chatbot coach and the impact it can have on learning in the workplace. Emma Weber is CEO/Founder Lever – Transfer of Learning. Emma, a learning transfer authority, made it her mission in life to make a difference to learning transfer worldwide. Frustrated by the amount of learning which is wasted when it fails to make it across the knowing–doing gap Emma created the Turning Learning into Action™ methodology to solve that problem. This methodology is deployed throughout 20 countries and in 12 languages by a talented team and Coach M, a conversational intelligence chatbot. Coach M is challenging the industry's thinking of what's possible in learning transfer. Emma shares her passion and expertise through her writing – her first book 'Turning Learning into Action: a proven methodology for effective transfer of learning' was published by Kogan Page in 2014 and is excited to have her 1st co-written ATD Association for Talent Development) press book ‘Designing Virtual Learning for Application & Impact' published in 2023. Will AI steal your job? How focus can help

Guest post by Chris Griffiths and Caragh Medlicott are the authors of The Focus Fix: Finding clarity, creativity and resilience in an overwhelming world out now, Kogan Page. Why creativity will be your career superpower in the age of AI Job security is something almost all of us will have had concerns about at one point or other. After all, it's hard to focus on doing a good job when you're worried that your role might be at risk. In our modern age, this is a concern that has become relevant to an increasing number of people. The Focus Fix In the last few years, we have seen the prevalence of AI grow more and more significant. As its abilities scale and its ubiquity increases, it's only natural that many individuals have begun to wonder if there's anything AI can't do - and what that might mean for their job, and even their industry as a whole. Undoubtedly, this is a reasonable concern. Reports have abounded that AI may replace the equivalent of 300 million jobs in the future, which is certainly a number not to be sniffed at. Yet, such predictions come alongside projections for job transformation - with much to suggest AI may actually create more occupations than it eradicates as time goes by. Job transformation has often been the outcome of technological advancements historically. Whether that be during the boon of the industrial revolution or entrance into the computer-powered age of the latter twentieth century. Still, the power and speed with which AI is disrupting the workplace can be unnerving, but it's important to keep in mind the key advantage we as human beings still have over AI. So, what is this magical human skill you ask? Well, the answer may initially trigger scepticism - because I'm here to tell you that creativity is the career superpower which gives us an edge over machine learning. Of course, there are a few reasons why you may be doubtful - at least initially. This is because - while AI cannot be creative in a true sense - it does have the ability to display creative behaviours. It can produce imitative pieces of artwork or fiction much quicker than a human. Given such machine-learning tools can, for example, produce a piece of art in the style of Van Gogh in a matter of moments, this may give the false impression that it matches the creative ability of the artist - but that's not so. This is because AI would not be able to produce such work without the humans who first trailblazed the new impressionist style which brought us artists such as Van Gogh in the first place. Put another way, AI is only as creative and capable as the data it's trained on - information that (crucially) comes from human output. Without this information AI would not be helpful, and if all artists were to cease innovating from this point onwards, we would never advance into new epochs of artistic style and revelation. Instead, the strength of AI lies in its ability to juggle, arrange and make useful large amounts of data (something it can store at a level unfathomable to humans). In the future, this may indeed outstrip the ability of humans in certain ways. For example, an AI tool may be able to run through a list of potential ailments of illnesses quicker than a human doctor. However, that still wouldn't give it the ability to think more abstractly about how a rare disease had combined with another to produce an unconventional set of symptoms or present in an uncommon way. And it certainly couldn't offer the empathy, reassurance and quality of connection that a human doctor is capable of. Ultimately, this is the case because AI has no subjective understanding of the world. It might be able to replicate an artist style or help with a medical diagnosis, but it has no personal experience of being moved by a work of art or being stuck down by illness. Our own conscious perspective is one of the crucial things which gives us our creative ability. Our lives are foregrounded in a personal emotional climate, by the memory which feeds our...

We humans are social creatures. We form organic communities wherever we go, based on shared interests, passions and needs. But when we try to impose top-down learning communities on an employee population, things get more difficult. Is it possible for L&D to create a flourishing community? In this week's episode of The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, Ross Garner and Nahdia Khan are joined by Andy Lancaster, author of Organizational Learning Communities, who offers a framework that can help. We discuss: ·       Types of workplace learning community ·       The key characteristics of successful communities ·       A framework that you can use to establish an effective community Andy's book is available now from Kogan Page.
