How do traders do it, overcoming setbacks, managing their risk and reining in their emotions to take chunks of money out of the markets? Showhost Nicholas Penrake chats with traders from all kinds of backgrounds, inviting them to share with us their highs and lows on their way to achieving consistent results. Trading is a tough game – they say only around 5 per cent of those who try actually make a profit. Listen to A Trader’s Life to glean some valuable insights from the market wizards Nic get to talk to.  If you glance at my profile on LinkedIn, you’ll see I’m no big shot trader. Mid way through 2023, after nearly three years' trading, I'm still only break-even.  But every week I learn something new. And part of that learning process is enriched by talking and listening to other traders, those with more experience than I have.We all know that emotions can seriously derail your trading aspirations. It's been my experience - and I hope you agree - that every so often listening to other traders' stories can not only be instructive but inspirational, even comforting, to a degree.  Just one example: one of my guests lost 50,000 in just a just a few months. Today’s she’s crushing it in commodities. How did she do it? You come here to find out. And here’s the thing… the picture I’m getting is that it’s not so much about the money, it’s about the challenge. It’s also about freedom: finding a pursuit that can make you an income that only relies on your smarts and an internet connection. If you can get there, trading can potentially free up your day, allowing you to explore a world that extends far beyond the daily commute to an office. So, if you’re a trader interested in comparing your story with the stories of traders who’ve cracked it, or even if you’re just curious about trading, grab your headphones, open your browser and have a listen – A Trader’s Life.

Chris Vermeulen has been trading since he was at high school. Today he runs a newsletter that offers his technical analysis on what the markets are telling him. He also runs a real estate business and, recently, he's stepped in as an executive producer on a family movie. You may have seen him in a suit and tie in a number of news programs talking about trading. I said we don't do suits on my show, so today here he is the way he is at home. Enjoy the conversation. ==If you're a trader with an interesting story to share and you'd like to be on the show, reach out to nic.penrake@gmail.com. As a trader, you have to be able to keep a check on your emotions, no matter what the state of play. Like air traffic controller, a sniper. Life or death. My next guest on A Trader's Life is no stranger to extreme pressure in trading. He's been trading since the eighties when charts were typically worked up with a pencil and paper. When he was diagnosed with arthritis as a young man, he knew he'd have to work on his mindset if he was to cope with the kinds of stressful situations he found himself in on a daily basis.. Today Mark Randall is a very successful high performance coach. He helps develop traders, and trading teams at corporate level. They hire him because his methods and teaching make a real difference, not just in financial gains but also in terms of a trader's overall wellbeing. ==A unique trading strategy with a very high win rateYou've probably heard of Fibonacci, and you may already be using the Fibonacci tool you find on TradingView as part of your trading stratregy. Until about a year ago, I thought these tools were the last on the subject of Finoacci sequences. Then I met trader and investor All Peters-Plocher and talked to the people using her proprietary Fibonacci tool and strategy. To date, I have met five of Alla's students, and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys I spoke to said he'd been struggling for about 10 years before he joined one of Alla's courses, and once he got going, he was consistently profitable. He just bought a house in Arizona with the money he's made since he joined.Like me, he's a filmmaker. One of things he loves about her system is that he spends only a few minutes a day checking trades, and can focus on his filmmaking projects. I also met Alla herself when she was over in London, early in 2024. She even took me to lunch - at Claridges! - with her husband and two other 'student' traders. I believe she genuinely cares about the traders who sign up to her programs. More than that - she's on a mission to help traders of all abilities.  It's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do - but down below you'll find some links to her courses. Transform your trading performanceIf this is a good time for you to join one of Alla's program, and you found this podcast episode useful in helping you come to that decision, I'd really appreciate it if you were to sign up via one of the links below - it would be extra cost to you but would help me cover some of the costs of running this podcast and enable me to do more ambitious episodes, both audio and video, in the future. If you'd like to talk to me in person about Alla's courses, feel free to reach out on email - nic.penrake@gmail.com - and we can arrange to have a chat over Zoom or WhatsApp, whichever you prefer. Previously a lawyer, now a full time trader, Pablo Fdez Escarzaga from Spain told me he spent his first two years trading the markets "going nowhere". Then, quite by chance, he came across Alla Peters Plocher's Fibonacci Trading Institute and, within a few months of applying her strategy, his trading improved. Massively.Today he typically makes 10% a week trading her method on a range of assets, from Futures to options. Pablo is the fourth person I've spoken to who signed up to Alla's course and completely transformed his trading performance. If you feel as Pablo did that you're "going nowhere" with your trading, or you're making progress but it's all so up and down, I think you'll find this conversation highly motivating. ==Discover the benefits of Alla's unique trading strategyIt's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do. At the time of writing this, I have met four of Alla's students in person, and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys is a filmmaker. If you've been trading a while, it's probably safe to assume you've come across the Fibonacci retracement and extension tools. This, to me, is another dimension altogether.Alla has been fascinated by numbers and patterns in music and mathematics since she was a child. She became fascinated by the markets some twenty years ago, and today she has students all around the world. If you're fascinated by the patterns we see in the markets, and you want to develop a more preciseI trading strategy than you currently work with, I think you'll get a lot of value from this episode. ==Alla's Coaching ProgramsIt's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do. I have met three of Alla's students in person and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys is a filmmaker. The two men got talking and Gavin started to gobble up everything he could on the subject of supply and demand.  Where does the smart money leave its footprints? he wanted to know. Volume. How to scan for it, how to read it? Done manually that would take forever. So he built some software to help him identify financial instruments that were getting ready to pop. What he and a coder came up with not only worked for him, it's worked for thousands of traders around the world.   Gavin and I got together in early September 2023 to chat about his transition from police officer to salesman, from student trader and more recently fund manager. He's a thoroughly gregarious chap and I hope you enjoy the conversation.  ==To find out more about Gavin's methodology and the tools he uses to turn over a tidy profit year after year, go here. Support the showPlease follow A Trader's Life on Twitter. They take a crack at trading, blow a lot of their savings and decide it might be less stressful trading a fund, not tied to their bank account.  For prop firms, competition is hotting up, and, on the whole, that tends to be a good thing for traders looking to get funded. In this episode I chat with Michael Buchbinder, one of the founders of the prop firm Tradiac. 79 | How to overcome the dangers of bias in trading

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2023 11:08

About a year ago I got to know and like a guy  who had been trading for about twenty years. I enjoyed chatting with him about trading. Then one day, he proposed trading a small fund on my behalf.  The arrangement would entail his taking a cut of the profits, if any, and while he was trading, he would happily teach me how to read the markets.  Sounded good to me. We got off to a positive start. Oh, dear, how often that happens in trading, right? The markets were turning bearish - and choppy, I should add. He was convinced the indices were about to collapse, the Yen would roar back to life and we would be, if not rich, then sitting pretty. His analysis was very convincing, well argued. It just happened to be wrong. He held on to it. Even as the indices pushed through the 200 EMA, he was telling me the bears would regain control any day now. They didn't. And so the account was reduced  from £2,000 to £2 in under three months. It was disappointing. More so that he didn't think to call me up to apologise, as you might expect, given all the talk about turning me into a successful trader.Perhaps he was embarrassed, but still. So, he just disappeared. and I licked my wounds. I felt foolish. I hadn't been scammed, I'd simply let myself be carried along by someone with experience (and audits to prove he'd been successful) and told myself, 'It'll be alright...It'll be alright...'The dangers of bias. There's a guy I work with who deals in forex. He has a client who recently blew a few million, shorting cable.  A few million. So he's a rich guy, who must be pretty smart to have made so much he has 20 million casino money, and yet, when it comes to trading, he's not so smart. This wasn't his first attempt at shorting the British pound, apparently. It would seem he had a bias against the pound, possibly something personal. There's an interesting thing about bias. It's actually a form of hubris. Deep down, guys like the two just referenced can't wait to show the world they had it right when everyone else had it wrong. They want to be George Soros shorting the pound. And I get it. Wouldn't it be nice, if we could all pull that one off?  But when you make it personal, when you refuse to revise your plan even in face of evidence to suggest you have it wrong, you aren't trading anymore, you're putting your ego out there, your hand cupped to one ear in anticipation of a collective gasp and the pop of a Champagne cork.having interviwed a lot of traders now, I'm surprised how many traders still fall prey to bias.Beware of bias. Mid February 2023 Corey Andrews at Surge Trader put me in touch with trader Jean-Francois Boucher. I was very grateful he did, because my conversation with Jean-Francois has been one of the most absorbing I've had since I started this podcast. If you subscribe to A TRADER'S LIFE, you'll know by now that I'm particularly drawn to traders who have distinctive stories to tell. Jean-Francois certainly delivers on that front. It's a wonder really that he's trading at all after all the ups and downs he's put himself through. His tenacity, humility and a profound desire to learn from obstacles in his way make for a thoroughly engrossing episode. ==Support the showPlease follow A Trader's Life on Twitter. Michael Katz is a veteran day trader. Stocks and futures. He also helps run Trade the Pool, a prop firm based in Israel. I think you'll find some useful tips and insights dotted about in this conversation, a handful perhaps that are worth noting down, especially if you've not been trading more than 2 or 3 years. ==Use my 10% Discount Coupon ATL10off for your 'audition' with Surge Trader prop firm.
