When the king of Egypt is first introduced in our OT book of Exodus he is not named, nor thereafter. But the book itself in Hebrew is called "Names," and even the midwives are named (Exod. 1:15). Egyptians tended to treat the kings of their enemies the same way. Dr. Oliver Hersey is the 11th president of Jerusalem University College. In this final episode of Season 6, I was joined by former student, long-time supporter of our sport management program, and outstanding Trinity University alumna (class of 2013), Veronica Oviedo. She is currently the Director of Marketing at Spurs Sports and Entertainment. During our conversation Veronica spoke glowingly of mentors, of great leaders she's worked with, who shaped her outlook and approach to leadership. She "doesn't think titles matter" and the regular listeners will hear direct connections to The Leadership Challenge, and specific references to the DISC Behavioral tool and Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model - all of which have been important elements of our class this year. Veronica emphasizes that great leaders ask questions AND create space for others to ask questions. The way she describes her use of the job interview as a starting place to learn teammates' why and as the place where leadership development begins is truly inspiring - and quite frankly should be a model for leaders of all stripes and across any industry sector. She desribes her role as a leader who leads leaders and highlights that leaders must model vulnerability, self-awareness, and followership. Her people-centered approach to leadership is underscored when she describes that the leader and follower co-create the culture. The conversation is high energy and so much fun for both Veronica and me. To conclude the episode, I lectured on chapter 13 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I discuss Followership and its significant role in the leadership process. I normally encourage listeners who aren't in the class to skip the lecture, but this time I'm actually imploring you to listen. Followership is a topic that NEEDS to be discussed and there are places in the lecture that might be good starting points for those conversations! I hope you enjoy the episode. Drop me a note; I'd love to hear your thoughts so I can bring them into our class.
Cynthia Tice started Lily's Sweets at the age of 60 and sold it to Hersey's 11 years later for $400 Million. Wow! Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those. [Seaside Plumbing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, that guy next to me is Stephen Semple, and we're talking about empires. We're talking about businesses that started with nothing and grew to be huge, as we say. And today, Stephen whispered in my ear the topic and I've never heard of it. No idea. Stephen Semple: Yay, finally stumped. It doesn't stump Dave very often. Dave Young: Thanks for listening to The Empire Builders Podcast. That's all we've got for you today. Oh, no, wait. Stephen Semple: Because clearly if Dave- Dave Young: Oh, wait. Stephen Semple: Because clearly if Dave's not heard about it, it's not interesting. Dave Young: Wait a minute. I forgot to have you tell me about them, so go ahead. Go ahead with your little story there, Stephen. Stephen Semple: Yeah, so it's a company called Lily's Sweets. Now, they're a chocolate company and they make sugar-free chocolate. And I'm not surprised that you haven't heard of them, but here's the reason why I think they're worth talking about, is 11 years after the business started by Cynthia Tice, it was sold to Hershey's for $400 million. Dave Young: That's a nice little getaway. Stephen Semple: Yeah, that's worth talking about. Don't you think? Dave Young: So it's owned by Hershey's now. Stephen Semple: It's owned by Hershey's now. Dave Young: Do they still operate under the name Lily's Sweets or is it all just a- Stephen Semple: Yes, they do. Dave Young: ... Hershey's conglomerated candy corporation. Stephen Semple: The bar is called Lily's Sweets, so you can still get Lily's Sweets bars. They're made by Hershey's. And as I said, Cynthia sold it to the company after 11 years for- Dave Young: 11 years? Stephen Semple: ... $400 million. Yes. Dave Young: That's brilliant. Stephen Semple: Now, here's the other thing is she started the company at the fine young age of 60. Dave Young: I love this story. Stephen Semple: Right? Now you understand why I wanted to share this story. Dave Young: There may yet be hope. Stephen Semple: And so they do these sugar-free chocolates, and the goal for her was always to make a good, enjoyable chocolate product. Because we go back to early days of the sugar-free products, they were marketed to people who are diabetic and who are trying to lose weight, and they really didn't taste good. But the anti-sugar movement triggered something that was bigger because people started to discover that sugar's tied in inflammation, and there's been this explosion in these products. To give you an idea, in 2024, the no-sugar chocolate area as a category doubled. That's how much the growth is. Dave Young: 2004? Stephen Semple: 2024. So still even today- Dave Young: 2024. Doubled in '24? Stephen Semple: Still even today, yes, the growth is really rapid. But this is what Cynthia saw, so let's go back to 2008 in Philadelphia. Cynthia Tice is a food consultant and a graduate of Temple University. And Temple University is actually a big presence in Philadelphia. I had a chance to speak at Temple and it's in downtown Philly, and downtown Philly's pretty neat. And look, if you're ever in Philadelphia, you have to go do the Rocky statue, right? Dave Young:

When we talk about generosity, it's never just about money. It's about trust. In this message, Pastor Josh teaches how returning the tithe and giving offerings are not transactions but transformations. We don't give to get; we give because everything already belongs to God. Psalm 24 says, “The earth is the Lord's and everything in it.” When we see ourselves not as owners but as stewards, it changes how we live, how we lead, and how we love. This final message in the Lead Me series calls us to walk generously, trusting God with what we have and believing His way is always better than ours. Whether you're stepping into tithing for the first time or being stretched to give above and beyond, this is a moment to let faith lead you forward. God's will is good, His path is firm footing, and His promise is sure: when we return to Him what is His, there will always be bread in His house and stories of changed lives to tell. When Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” He wasn't talking about money, He was talking about order. In this message, Pastor Josh Hersey walks through what it means to walk orderly in every area of life, especially in how we handle what God's given us. From Mark 12 to Matthew 6, from creation to Cain and Abel, we see a clear pattern: God is first, God went first, and God requires first. When we put Him in His rightful place, everything else finds its rhythm again. This teaching challenges us to see giving not as a transaction but as transformation. It's a conversation about trust, not totals. When we bring our first and our best to God, we're declaring that our peace, security, and satisfaction don't come from things, they come from Him. Whether you're new to faith or have walked with Jesus for years, this message will stir your heart to reorder your life around what matters most. The penultimate horror film in Have You Ever Seen's 10th Annual Scary Movie Month was a blockbuster and an Oscar-winner. And that's unusual for the relentless and unsubtle director Darren Aronofsky. He isn't often rewarded so much for the chances he takes. This 693rd episode talks about how the intense Black Swan is women-centric, even as the women in it go through hell. Natalie Portman won Best Actress for playing a lonely ballet dancer who was deluded even before the movie started. Then after she gets the lead role in Swan Lake, she shows us levels of masochism, obsession and deep mental illness. Real versus imagined. Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassell hit some home runs too, with Hersey eating it up as Portman's possessive and abusive mother. So put on your feathers and get ready for an episode all about the sordid and dangerous world of ballet. In a world that says “do what feels right,” this message flips the script. What if the way forward in your faith isn't about getting more but giving more? Pastor Josh walks through Romans 12 and the call to walk sacrificially, to present our lives as a living offering to God. Through powerful stories, laughter, and conviction, he shows how sacrifice is not loss but worship, how God's way always leads to a firmer footing, and how one person's obedience can change generations. If you've ever wondered what it really means to trust God with all of you, not just a percentage, this message will challenge and inspire you. You'll leave asking, “What might God want to do through my sacrifice?” and realizing that the life He calls us to give up is the one we were made to live all along. Did you accept Christ today? This week I was so lucky to sit down with Rob Sender, Trinity University alumnus '99, for the Living Leadership Interview segment. After leaving Trinity he earned a Master's degree in Sports Sales from Baylor University which segued into a first job in Minor League Baseball. Following many years on the agency side, Rob has found a home as the Senior Brand and Marketing Director with the Dallas Cowboys. The conversation weaves from managing one of the most iconic brands in the world, his time and Trinity, and his thoughts on the Situational Leadership model, his leadership philosophy, and principles. He describes the impact of mentors he had at Trinity and those in his professional life since. Rob indicates that one can become a great leader through being exposed to lots of different leadership styles and leader personalities and at the end of the day curiosity should be the "coin of the realm." I truly appreciate how he describes the need to tinker, the need to "test and learn" and why all of us should manage our networks. The episode concludes with my lecture on chapter 5 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I provide an overview of Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model, discuss details about the connection between a leader's style and the follower's developmental level, and why it's essential that leaders engage in conversations with their team members. Let me know your reactions to my chat with Rob. Reach out to both of us on LinkedIn and let's keep the conversation going.

When God created work, it wasn't a punishment, it was part of His original design. Before sin entered the world, Adam was given purpose, creativity, and calling. In this message, Pastor Josh reminds us that we don't work for rest, we work from it. Whether you're in an office, on a job site, at home raising kids, or serving in church, your work is worship. God invites us to see our everyday labor as holy ground, a place to reflect His image and impact the world around us. Through teaching, humor, and real-life stories, this sermon calls us to reject laziness, embrace purpose, and recognize that God has uniquely placed each of us where we are for a reason. From the garden of Eden to your 9-to-5, the message is clear: your work matters to God. Life comes at us with pressures of finances, unexpected challenges, and the temptation to look for security in what we have instead of who holds us. In this message from Wise Up: Wise Wallets, Pastor Josh reminds us from Proverbs 3 and Matthew 6 that the heart of the matter isn't about money, buildings, or stuff. It's about where our trust lies. God isn't against us having things, but He is against things having us. True wisdom means seeking first His kingdom, putting Him in the first place of our hearts, and finding satisfaction and security in Jesus alone. Did you accept Christ today? At Church on the Rock, we've been praying Psalm 143:10: “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.” As part of our discipleship journey, The MOVE, we believe following God's will means defending and uplifting “the least of these.” Poverty's deepest wound isn't hunger, it's hopelessness. But through local churches, Compassion International is releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name by meeting physical needs and introducing them to the gospel. This message isn't about charity — it's about discipleship. We learn how each of us can provide food, clean water, education, and medical care, while also building a real relationship with a child through letters and updates. More than that, you get to speak hope and value into their life and fulfill 1 John 3:18: “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” We can't rescue every child, but each of us can rescue one. What if God's big plan to reach the world… is you? That's what this message is all about. Not your pastor. Not a platform. You. Your life, your words, your response to pressure, fatigue, criticism, and everyday moments. In this message, Pastor Josh pulls back the curtain on what it really means to live the gospel — not just preach it, but embody it. We're not just saved from something — we're saved for something. You were made to be an ambassador of heaven, and yes, God picked you on purpose. But let's be honest — there's a lot that fights against that calling. The fear of people's opinions. The pull of pride and selfishness. The weight of burnout. This message will stir something in you, challenge you, and remind you that the power to live this out doesn't come from trying harder. In this episode, Jessi Hersey bravely shares her story of surviving two forms of coercive control: childhood grooming by her drum teacher and emotional manipulation within the Twin Flames Universe online cult. As a neurodivergent survivor, Jessi reflects on how her autism both made her more vulnerable and more attuned to subtle forms of abuse. She discusses the long-term impact of grooming, the cult's use of “mirror exercises” to control beliefs, and her journey to reclaim safety and identity. Jessi's story highlights the urgent need for awareness around neurodivergence, grooming, and online spiritual coercion.---
What do you do when life does not go as planned? When disappointment, failure, or even spiritual burnout make you want to give up and go back to what you knew before? In this message, Pastor Josh takes us deep into Galatians 4 to ask a simple but soul-stirring question: Why do we go back when we've already been set free? Whether it is old habits, a religious mindset, or just a broken view of God's love, this message reminds us that the Gospel is not about earning approval — it is about responding to a love that was never based on performance in the first place. This is more than a sermon. It is an invitation to return to the Father, to grace, to freedom. With raw honesty and powerful storytelling, Pastor Josh shares how we often drift away, not out of rebellion but from forgetting who we are in Christ. But the good news is this: we can always come back. And when we do, we do not find a God with arms crossed — we find a Father running toward us with arms open. At Church on the Rock, we're not here to play church. We're here to experience the life-giving, eternity-shifting power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In this message, Pastor Josh unpacks why the Gospel isn't just good advice—it's good news. Because at its core, the message of Jesus isn't about behavior—it's about life or death. If you've ever felt like church is only for people who “have it all together,” this episode is for you. Rooted in Romans 6:23, John 10:10, and John 3, we look at why the Gospel isn't about moral performance but about transformation. You'll discover what Jesus really meant when He promised life and life abundantly, how your identity in Christ comes before your activity, and why so many people say “no” to the greatest exchange in history—and how not to. The truth is simple: Jesus doesn't need you to clean up first. He came to bring you back to life. Did you make a decision to follow Christ today? Rooted in Romans 1:16, we stand unashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to all who believe. Yet many Christians still feel hesitant to share this hope. Why? And how can we change that? We'll explore how to overcome fear with humility and clarity, and how to confidently share your faith—without being pushy or awkward.
