That's right, it's the Ultimate Houston Date Night Draft on today's edition of the podcast. Join Eric Sandler, Felice Sloan, Rafael Nasr, Justin Yu, Mary Clarkson, and Evelyn Garcia as they select their ultimate date night. Here's what the teams will be drafting: a cold appetizer, a hot appetizer, an entree, a dessert, after dinner drinks, and a wild card. All of which must come from a Houston-area bar/restaurant. The wildcard can be anything in Houston that would be a fun stop on a date. For example, the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony, Turrell Exhibit, Menil Lawn, or a sixth bar/restaurant. The Draft Rules Rule 1: All six selections must be from different restaurants and bars. For instance, if a participant selects Bludorn for cold appetizers, the participant may not select Bludorn for desserts. Rule 2: Once a restaurant has been selected for a specific category/course, no other participant may select it for that category, but it is still eligible for other categories. For instance, if someone takes Bludorn for cold appetizers, Bludorn is still eligible for entrees, desserts, etc.  Rule 3: Snake draft format. The draft order will go one through six in round 1 then go backwards six through one in round 2.  Rule 4: Categories may be selected in any order.   Follow Eric on Instagram/Threads @ericsandler. Police identify 13-year-old boy shot in Norcross area

A 13-year-old boy has been identified by Gwinnett County police as the teen who died after he was shot in the middle of a Norcross area street Tuesday night. Jaeden Travis was shot on Windward Lane in unincorporated Norcross, near his home. Police were called to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, and found Travis laying in the street. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police are continuing to investigate who shot Travis and why they shot him, according to Cpl. William Wolfe. The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide and Crime Scene Investigations Units spent the evening combing the area and interviewing neighbors. Anyone who has information about who shot Travis, or why they shot him, is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers, which lets tipsters remain anonymous. Drivers in the Lilburn area have a new place to go when they need to renew the tag on their vehicles. The Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's Office announced a new tag renewal kiosk has been installed at the Kroger located at 300 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn. It is the ninth tag renewal kiosk in Gwinnett County. Vehicle owners can use the kiosk to renew their license plate without having to wait in a line at a tag office. It will be available during the store's operating hours, which are 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The kiosks accept debit and credit cards, and users will have to pay a small convenience fee to use them. The Tax Commissioner's Office does have 24hour kiosks at its Lawrenceville and North Gwinnett offices, in addition to the seven kiosks that are located at retail businesses.  In many ways, the city of Lawrenceville and Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church have grown and developed together, as the city was incorporated in 1821 (making it the second-oldest municipality in metro Atlanta) and the church was established just two years later. As the church celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, Senior Pastor Adam Hilderbrandt is adamant that the city and the church continue their centuries-long connection through an initiative known as “Lawrenceville First.” Lawrenceville First UMC has offered a helping hand to a number of entities in the community, including homeless shelters, food cooperatives and the schools in the Central Gwinnett Cluster. The church, which was founded in February 1823 by the Rev. William Justice Parks, is focusing on its anniversary this month, with special services each week. On the first Sunday of February, a confirmation celebration was held, and on the second Sunday of the month, Lawrenceville FUMC's community partners were invited to speak to the congregation. This Sunday , former pastor Davis Chappell — now senior pastor at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee — will return to preach, and a very special dedication is also planned. Hilderbrandt noted that from 1904 until 1972, the church met in the building which now houses the Aurora Theatre, which plays a role in the special ceremony.  Six Berkmar High School students were chosen to display their ceramic artwork at this year's 2023 Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium. The Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium is an annual gathering of ceramic artists from around the state of Georgia. The symposium consists of a Juried Student Exhibition and several hands-on workshops. The exhibition showcases ceramic art made by high school students from both public and private high schools throughout the state. The exhibition took place on January 21 at LaGrange College's Lamar Dodd Art Center and showcased art from students from 26 different schools. The GCPS students selected for this year's symposium include the following Berkmar students: ♦ Evelyn Garcia, junior ♦ Joselyn Pineda Tejada, senior ♦ Joselin Reyes, junior ♦ Kristine Vuu, junior ♦ Nayeishka Morales Collado, junior ♦ and Yolibeth Contreras, senior The GFWC Lilburn Women's Club is looking for local restaurants who want to come together and offer the community a sampling of their dishes. The club is set to host its first Taste of Lilburn event from 4 until 7 p.m. on April 29 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church's Heritage Hall. In anticipation of that event, the group is now taking applications from restaurants, bakeries and chefs to have a booth at it. Anyone who would like to apply to have a booth at the event can find the application at Taste of Lilburn dot org. Applications are now being accepted for the award-winning Suwanee Youth Leaders, a nine-month leadership program led by the city of Suwanee. The program is a community-based leadership experience that focuses on developing young leaders through structured educational programs and team-building activities. With a mission to “empower young leaders to connect inside the community and make an impact outside the classroom,” the program centers on civic involvement, leadership skills, and volunteer opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in monthly learning sessions, including a two-day retreat, listen to guest speakers, attend field trips, and participate in several hands-on projects including event planning and a community service initiative. The Class of 2023-24 will begin meeting in August of 2023 with new sophomores and juniors, and will meet throughout the school year until April 2024. The city will accept applications between Feb. 15 and March 31. Eligible students will be current high school freshmen and sophomores who live in the North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, and Collins Hill clusters, as well as home school and private school students who reside within those clusters. Today Barbara is joined by Evelyn Garcia, who cares for her mother who has younger-onset dementia. Evelyn was living in Virginia when she got a call from her mother's doctor, saying she couldn't live alone any longer. When Evelyn flew out to Los Angeles, she realized how bad things were: her mother was paranoid and forgetful, cried all the time, and wasn't paying bills or taking care of herself. In June of 2020, Evelyn moved to Los Angeles to take care of her. Evelyn and Barbara talk about how hard it is to become a caregiver without any background or training. They discuss different methods and tricks to keep her mother moving forward with her day – “otherwise she just cries,”  Evelyn says. Evelyn shares how difficult it's been for her, doing all the caregiving by herself with no one in her family offering to help. She also shares how painful it is to watch her mother's memory decline. Each time she notices a new problem – most recently it was her mother not recognizing her – she cries too, just not in front of her mother so she won't know there's something wrong. If you would like to share your caregiving story, Barbara would love to hear from you! The day Bravo's Top Chef asked Evelyn Garcia – the chef behind Kin HTX – to appear on its 19th season, she had to think long and hard about it. Yes, it was a chance to compete for $250,000, and yes, it was great publicity. But was she ready? Evelyn had already turned down Top Chef in 2014 when she felt too young and inexperienced to compete. But this time, she considered all she's learned in the past several years working in New York and Southeast Asia, experiencing so many different kitchens and preparing so many different kinds of foods. Now feels ready – and the best part? She's steeped in the rich Houston food scene ... the site of this year's Top Chef competition.
