This episode of Talking Trek was originally intended to be a livestream, not a traditional podcast recording. Some sermons are harder to make than others. Some texts you read and think, “Well, that's a sordid tale. Not much to uplift the soul here. Let's move on.” There are others where you encounter a story like this, and those brave souls who attempt to spend some time in there can see multiple ways of looking at the story. Unfortunately, this is a story that isn't unfamiliar to our culture. Versions of this happen every day. Something like this may have even happened to you in this room. Because this topic is so familiar, it can blind us on how best to see it, because our various cultures and upbringings crowd around us as we read. A mistake that we can make in looking at this text (and really many others) is to try to find the main villain. We try to make it simple and reduce the story to pure good guys versus pure bad guys. And that's just not what we see here. As one commentator put it, there is “ostensibly nothing…commendable” in this chapter (Matthews). He's right. Yes, there are some actions in this chapter that are worse than others, but there is something that everyone in this room can identify with. This is a hard story, but there are two points for us to draw from it that Tim Keller, I believe, famously said: You are worse than you think but You are loved more than you know.

In May 2023 Richard Turley and Barbara Jones Brown published a book through Oxford University Press entitled Vengeance is Mine, which documents the aftermath of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, including the efforts of Church and civic leaders in southern Utah to conceal their involvement in the atrocity through witness silencing and misinformation, as well as evading or stalling investigations by both government agencies and church organizations by lack of cooperation and political maneuvering. They also chronicle details about the nine individuals who were ultimately indicted, the five who were apprehended, and John D. Lee, who ultimately faced execution. In this episode of Church History Matters, we sit down with both Richard Turley and Barbara Jones Brown to discuss their important book, to hear their informed insights and perspectives, and to consider what Latter-day Saints and others can learn from this tragedy and how we can productively move forward. Now if you will remember last week, Paul the Apostle had been brought into Roman custody. The Commander was trying to figure out who Paul was...and why the crowd was trying to kill him. He had already heard Paul's testimony, but the Commander still thought that there had to be more to the story. And in an effort to coerce the "truth" out of Paul...he ordered the soldiers to begin an interrogation. Let me translate that for everybody. He ordered the soldiers to scourge Paul. He ordered them to beat Paul... until Paul told him what he wanted to hear.They stretched Paul out and prepared to beat him. And once they got him stretched out... Paul said, "Is it legal for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen and is uncondemned?"That got the Roman Commander's attention. In an effort to ensure he didn't lose his own life by beating a Roman Citizen... who had not been convicted of a crime nor judged... the Roman Commander order the soldiers to back off. And in order to get to the truth...he ordered the Sanhedrin...the religious leaders...and the Roman soldiers to all meet together to discuss "exactly" what happened.He wanted to know the truth about (1) who Paul was...and (2) why they wanted to kill him. And he planned to hear both sides of the story with everyone together in one place. So tonight, we pick up where we left off.
