Throughout Scripture, God always redirects his people to live according to His perfect will. His primary method was through specific individuals attuned to hear God's voice. These were the Prophets. In this series, Pastor Matt will take us through some unique stories of the Prophets' lives and how their actions and words continue to influence us today.

The Gospel Story: Moses , Exodus 1-2 by Beersheba Church

Thoughts on the readings for February 11th (Exodus 21; Psalm 74; Mark 7)Exodus 21 covers laws about slaves (verses 1-32) and laws about the restitution (verses 33-36). Slavery was a part of the world from the beginning of time until recently. In some countries it still exists. Israel had just been delivered from two centuries of servitude in Egypt. There Israel were severely afflicted and cruelly abused. Yahweh would not suffer His people to treat others as they had been treated. Note the premise the Lord GOD of Israel used to preface His Ten Commandments; and indeed the basis of the entire Law of Moses (Exodus 20:2) – “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (ESV). Servitude was to be limited to 6 years and at the conclusion of this time the slave was totally free. All slaves were restored to their original family situation. The exception to this was the voluntary slave, who out of love for his master chose to continue in service. The token of this free will offering was the opening of the lobe of the slave's ear with an awl at the doorpost of the house, in which he had chosen to stay with and serve. Our minds go to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ for His Father. Our Lord chose perpetual service in the Father's house – Psalm 40:6; Isaiah 50:4-7; Hebrews 3:1-6 all quotes from the ESV. And to verse 14 additional regulations about slaves are outlined. Verse 15 restates the need for respect for father and mother. Verse 16 covers kidnapping. Verse 17 tells that our words to our parents must be respectful. From the 18th verse onwards are additional directions for the fair and just treatment of slaves; and the respectful dealings with those slaves. Abuse of slaves was abhorrent and there were penalties applied. The rules for slaves seems curious in that it talks of an ox' goring of a slave; but of course this was prophetic of the rulers of Israel and their savaging of Yahweh's servant (Psalm 22:12-13). The laws about restoration speak of respect for and proper behaviour towards one's neighbour and his possessions.Psalm 74 is a Maschil from the pen of Asaph, the Recorder, or Secretary, during the reign of king David. The Psalm is a call for God to arise and defend His cause. The psalm commences with a question as to why the LORD has not seemingly cast them off in His anger. The psalmist calls upon His God to remember what He has done for His people, His heritage in Zion. The Psalm appears to have been written after a period of trial for His people. The destruction of the Sanctuary may have referred to the Philistine destruction of the Tabernacle at Shiloh, when Samuel was a child. The Philistines disdained the God of Israel. In verse 11 the writer calls upon the Almighty to repay his foes. The psalmist relates God's past awesome deeds, such as His bringing His people safely through the Red Sea; His provision for Israel of water from the rock as His people wandered through the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land. Exodus 21 covers laws about slaves (verses 1-32) and laws about the restitution (verses 33-36). Slavery was a part of the world from the beginning of time until recently. In some countries it still exists. Israel had just been delivered from two centuries of servitude in Egypt. There Israel were severely afflicted and cruelly abused. Yahweh would not suffer His people to treat others as they had been treated. Note the premise the Lord GOD of Israel used to preface His Ten Commandments; and indeed the basis of the entire Law of Moses (Exodus 20:2) – “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (ESV). Servitude was to be limited to 6 years and at the conclusion of this time the slave was totally free. All slaves were restored to their original family situation. The exception to this was the voluntary slave, who out of love for his master chose to continue in service. The token of this free will offering was the opening of the lobe of the slave's ear with an awl at the doorpost of the house, in which he had chosen to stay with and serve. Our minds go to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ for His Father. Our Lord chose perpetual service in the Father's house – Psalm 40:6; Isaiah 50:4-7; Hebrews 3:1-6 all quotes from the ESV. And to verse 14 additional regulations about slaves are outlined. Verse 15 restates the need for respect for father and mother. Verse 16 covers kidnapping. Verse 17 tells that our words to our parents must be respectful. From the 18th verse onwards are additional directions for the fair and just treatment of slaves; and the respectful dealings with those slaves. Abuse of slaves was abhorrent and there were penalties applied. The rules for slaves seems curious in that it talks of an ox' goring of a slave; but of course this was prophetic of the rulers of Israel and their savaging of Yahweh's servant (Psalm 22:12-13). The laws about restoration speak of respect for and proper behaviour towards one's neighbour and his possessions. Psalm 74 is a Maschil from the pen of Asaph, the Recorder, or Secretary, during the reign of king David. The Psalm is a call for God to arise and defend His cause. The psalm commences with a question as to why the LORD has not seemingly cast them off in His anger. The psalmist calls upon His God to remember what He has done for His people, His heritage in Zion. The Psalm appears to have been written after a period of trial for His people. The destruction of the Sanctuary may have referred to the Philistine destruction of the Tabernacle at Shiloh, when Samuel was a child. The Philistines disdained the God of Israel. In verse 11 the writer calls upon the Almighty to repay his foes. The psalmist relates God's past awesome deeds, such as His bringing His people safely through the Red Sea; His provision for Israel of water from the rock as His people wandered through the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land. The Pharisees found fault in Jesus' disciples who washed not after tradition. The Pharisees were noted for their elaborate ceremonies when washing: they washed so as to prevent water contaminated by dirt from contacting their hands. Our Lord used this to tell that this was symptomatic of the worship of that time. He spoke of the gross avoidance of responsibility contained in the 5th commandment by the ruse of Corban. Then he showed that defilement is a moral, not physical, matter. This originated in the mind. The record follows with the curing of the Syrophenician woman's daughter; made possible through her great faith, and the acknowledgment that Israel were God's chosen people. She illustrates the importance of being associated with God's covenant people and on the basis of her faithful confession she gratefully receives the crumbs that fall from the children's table. As Jesus says to the woman of the well at Sychar: “Salvation is from the Jews” John 4:22-26. The chapter concludes with the healing of a deaf and dumb man from the Decapolis.

Ever since lesson 49 in this series entitled, “The Gospel According to Moses: Exodus,” we've been dealing with added laws to the Ten Commandments that Yahvay יהוה is giving to His people at Sinai through Moses.  For me I know I have read these chapters (chapter 21-23) in Exodus and have not been overly affected.  I mean I am reading laws and in some cases they mean little to me in the 21st century.  The content of chapters 21-23 was not very stimulating for my faith and understanding.  Once again it is incumbent on us to read the Bible but we can not stop there.  We need to go further and study the Bible if we are to be true disciples of Adonai Yeshua.  A number of years ago I began Torah studies “under” Dennis Prager, the famous and renowned conservative radio talk show host, who is also a Torah and Hebrew expert.  Matter of fact as a religious Jew (he's not orthodox) he has said that this is his life's passion; to teach Torah תּוֹרָה to all, both Jew and Gentile.  He has an audio series on the Torah תּוֹרָה that took him 25 years to complete.  He is now taking those study materials and bring them to books called the “Rational Bible” one for each of the books Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.  They are awesome and Dennis did this to help Jews in Judaism and Christians into a deeper and more profound understanding of God's Word in the Torah תּוֹרָה.  Like Dennis has said, Christians and Jews have the same God and the same Bible except for the New Testament of course.  For me my studies in my graduate program was focused on the historical context of the Bible.  So where Dennis stops his lessons because he is a religious Jew, I take up and take us to the Messiah, the Lord, Jesus. By knowing the New Testament and the Jewish culture of Jesus' day we find that indeed SCRIPTURE testifies of Jesus and we see His teaching and His words in the Old Testament, the Hebrew Scriptures, just like Jesus taught us in John 5:39 … "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.” (Joh 5:39) So I listened to the audio lessons and use them as a foundation for this series in Exodus and the completed series in Genesis.  It has been my goal to share these awesome lessons from the true Jewish scholar but also to go beyond Dennis' lessons and commentaries and show how the words of Torah testify of Yeshua, our Lord, Jesus.  For these chapters in Exodus 21-23 I was amazed at how much I missed.  The laws, especially in the Hebrew, are more intense and explosive than in the English and so applicable to our day.  The Torah תּוֹרָה is God's instruction for them then and us now.  In this lesson, lesson 58 focusing on Exod. 23:6-12, we study and experience that same awesomeness to God's word.  More than that once we go into the Hebrew it takes us to the very words of Jesus again and again.  The Torah תּוֹרָה was Jesus' Bible and He tells us to immerse ourselves and base our entire life on God's Word when He said … "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (Joh 8:31-32) I mentioned in this lesson about the two Hebrew words one of truth and the other for a lie.  The Hebrew word for truth is AYMET and in Hebrew it is אֶמֶת – the first and middle and last letter in the Hebrew alphabet.  The word for lie is SHEKER and in Hebrew it is שֶׁקֶר – the last three letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  Is the Lord giving us a “picture?”  Perhaps.  Rabbi Daniel Lappin comments in this way … Truth or AYMET אֶמֶת comprises, in sequence, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the middle letter, and the final letter. The message is that truth fits into the entire story from A to Z as it were.  The word for LIE or SHEKER שֶׁקֶר is made up of the 2nd last, the 4th last, and the 3rd last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Since truth and lies are so incompatible, the last letter, having already been used for the final letter of AYMET, truth, cannot be used for falsehood. 8. Messiah's Promise Isaiah 54:1-17 God fulfills every promise He has made! You may recall back on Day 4 in Isaiah 52, Isaiah started talking about a great homecoming for all those who believed. Then on our Day 5, Isaiah gave a picture regarding the sacrificial suffering of the Messiah Servant. Now in Isaiah 54, we see the reason for the suffering. We see that because of this coming Messah's suffering and subsequent exultation and vindication, that God will make a New Covenant with all the peoples of the world! God has always kept the promises He made with people! Promises to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and David were also kept by God! God is ever faithful and always true to His word! And here God reminds them through Isaiah of three promises or covenants He has made: Abraham, Moses and Noah. Past - Covenant with Abraham! Here in Isaiah 54:1-3 God reminds the people through Isaiah, that God has always kept His promises to His people! If they looked back at the covenant promises made to Abraham, they would see this (Genesis 12:1-3)! When they go into exile, keep hold of the promises of God and be obedient to Him! God is always faithful and wants their total obedience to Him! How are these verses of Isaiah 54:1-3, are meant to be a reminder of the covenant with Abraham? The mention of the barren woman (1), tent (2) and descendants (3) would all bring to mind God's promises to Abraham... The barren woman, would be a reminder that Abraham and Sarah were aged and childless. The tent would act as a reminder that Abraham was a tent-dweller in an alien land. The descendants would remember that they themselves are descendants from Abraham! And God has promised in 54:3 that they will return to the land of Abraham and populate there once more. The Abrahamic covenant is a link to all of God's activities and programs until the end of time, when Jesus returns to gather His people to Himself. That is how important it was, particularly to Israel! The covenant had aspects for Abraham personally, as well as aspects that applied to all nations. Past - Covenant with Moses Now in Isiaah 54:4-8, God moves to the covenant He made with Moses (Exodus 19v5-8). When as a young nation, Israel was in exile and slavery in Egypt - it was an embarrassment to her. Now as a nation she was like an aged widow, she was due to be in exile again, but in Babylon this time. But just as God made the covenant with Israel on Mount Sinai after escaping from Egypt, so too would God restore her to Himself once again and be her husband and Redeemer. The covenant with Moses begins with a stipulation "Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me." (Exodus 19v5). This covenant was to Israel in order that those who believed God's promise to Abraham would know how to live righteously and obediently. Past - Covenant with Noah! Next God talks about his promise to Noah (Genesis 9v1-19)! Now instead of just a covenant with Israel, this is a covenant with the whole world! After the flood, Noah and his descendants spread throughout the world, bringing new life and God's blessing to all parts. The flood is symbolic of the coming period that Israel will spend in exile, and all of the people of Israel are likened to the family of Noah and their descendants. God will protect them in exile, just as He did Noah and his family through the flood. God has always kept his promises to Israel! But Israel has not always been faithful! Future - Promised New City Now the Lord talks about the future - the now but not yet. A great city is built to house all those who are God's people as a reward for their obedient faithfulness despite trials, sufferings and persecution! Here Isaiah links also to the coming Messiah! Remember the Messiah was also a Disciple taught by God (Isaiah 50:4), then so were they (54:13)! Just has He had suffered (Isaiah 53:4), so have they (Isaiah 54:11)! Just as He was justified (Isaiah 50:8), so would they be (Isaiah 54:17). Those who serve God Almighty with faithful obedience will share in the sufferings of the Messiah King but also participate in His glory, because they are His children. Because of the Messiah Servant's sacrificial suffering they will be able to live in the city of God forever! God is going to make a new Covenant with people - and He can be trusted to keep His promises! How is Jesus this Messiah? Both the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel talk about the promise of this New Covenant that God will have with all of humanity. What is this New Covenant that God is making? Four features of this covenant are: Regeneration -God will write His law on the hearts of people. (Jeremiah 31v33) Restoration - God will be their God, and they will be God's people. (Jeremiah 31v33) Promised Holy Spirit - God will indwell people and they will be led by Him (Jeremiah 31v 34) Justification - Sins will be forgiven and removed eternally (Jeremiah 31v34) What does all this have to do with Jesus? This New Covenant is sealed only through the perfect sacrifice of the God-Man Jesus on the cross as spoken of in Isaiah 53:1-12. His blood ensures the truth of this New Covenant. His death pays the penalty for the sins of all people who say yes to God and His New Covenant. This New Covenant is contrasted with the Old Covenant or the Mosaic covenant (Jeremiah 31v32; Hebrews 8v6-13) because this New Covenant finalizes what the Mosaic Covenant could only point to: the follower of God living in a righteous life conforming to God's holy character. In this way, Jesus is also the redeemer of the Church and the redeemer mentioned in Isaiah 54:5 & Isaiah 54:7! He is the redeemer spoken about by Job (Job 19:25)! Relationship! Jesus Christ is the head of the church! The church is married to Jesus Christ and is frequently described as a bride! Just as the people of Israel were in Isaiah 54! How are the church linked to Jesus Christ? The Church is the Body of Christ - it is a living organism and not merely an organization (Ephesians 1v22, 23; 4v15-16). We are all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12v13) and this body is made up of many parts or believers. Each believer has a vitally necessary and important function (Ephesians 4v15; 1 Corinthians 12v13). The Church is the Bride of Christ - which suggests the purity, holiness and faithfulness of God's people. Furthermore it suggests the great love that Jesus Christ has for His Church, the Bride (Ephesians 5v25-32; 2 Corinthians 11v2; Rev 19v7.22v17) The Church is the Temple of Christ - Christ is building a spiritual temple with Himself as the Cornerstone or foundation. As Christian Disciples we are living stones and God dwells within the temple, filling it with all His fullness (Ephesians 2v22; 1 Peter 2v5) God keeps His promises - Jesus is proof of that! Join us as we make this journey to find true and lasting freedom. Sermon Transcript So, we're working through the book of Exodus in a sermon series called Journey to Freedom. Exodus is a story of liberation, of God rescuing and redeeming a people for himself. After freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Yahweh God led them through the desert wilderness by his word given through the prophet Moses and by his own holy Presence in the form of a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. But, we've seen that things didn't get much easier for the Israelites on the other side of the famous parting of the Red Sea. The Israelites struggled and grumbled through a series of desert tests before being viciously attacked by the Amalekites at Rephidim. It was tough, and the people didn't display a very impressive amount of faith in the God who had just rescued them from Egypt. But Yahweh proved faithful and good and provided what they needed despite their grumbling and quarreling. Today, we have one more stop to make, one more chapter in our story, before we get to the fireworks of Mount Sinai, the giving of the Law, and the establishment of the covenant between Yahweh and Israel. When Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, meets them, he offers a suggestion that would help Moses lead the people well and not be crushed by the burden. This chapter offers many leadership lessons. Now, whether you have an official leadership role or not, everyone can influence others for good. And this is what good leadership is all about. We need these lessons. Exodus 18:1–7 (NIV), “1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her 3 and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land”; 4 and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, “My father's God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.” 5 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, together with Moses' sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God. 6 Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.” 7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.” Moses doesn't record when, but at some point between leaving Midian with his family and his time in Egypt during the Ten Plagues, he sent his wife Zipporah and their sons back to live in Midian with her father, Jethro. Greetings, Leaders. Inspiration ignites identity. Identity fuels vision! Vision promotes growth and results. What your heart believes determines what you can do in life. "A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks." Luke 6:45 NAB  "Who am I?" A question every great leader must answer.   Moses, one of the most outstanding leaders of all time, asked the same question when called to a new assignment by God. Moses discovers his identity through God calling him. His response indicates his heart condition and how he saw himself then. God's mission for Moses was to deliver almost two million people from oppression and slavery.   "Therefore, come now, and I will send you... so that you may bring My people out." God - Exodus 3:11 "But Moses told God, "Who am I? How can I go to Pharaoh and bring the "Israelites" out of Egypt?" Moses - Exodus 3:11 ISV How we see ourselves is essential. Knowing the truth positions us for the most fantastic adventure in discovering who we are.  Knowing who we are is essential to discovering what we are born to do! We sometimes need clarification between what we do and who we are.  When doing becomes the priority, we focus on doing the most significant work imaginable.  This approach can lead us in the wrong direction in life and career. We risk finding significance in life and reaching our full potential. Understanding our identity prepares us for the adventure of a lifetime, impact, and fulfillment. "As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person." Proverbs 27:29 NLT  The heart, our thinking, is the catalyst that ignites us from within.  "But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well. "CEV Matthew 6:33 Let's take the steps and enjoy the journey! In Part 2 - Identity Matter! We will learn how to apply this leadership principle in our lives.  What insight can we learn from the transformation of Moses into the person God created him, and how can we apply the same process to our lives? First, God called Moses and chose him for what appeared to be an impossible mission. God will call us to something greater than we feel capable of doing.  Relying totally upon God is a catalyst for growth in a leader. "And He gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6 Second, Our age and experience do not matter in God's eyes. Gaining His view of us is most important. Moses was 80 years old. He was a sheep shepherd for 40 years and lived in a remote part of the desert! In part 2 We will cover the three remaining insights. Victory!
