In this episode, we speak to Lisa Nelson-Haynes about adapting Philadelphia Young Playwright's creative education program to online learning and the ways young people have found to express themselves in response to the pademic.

A topic on my mind and heart right now, I'm coming off of a lot of summer camps and experiences rubbing shoulders with amazing young women.   Do you know, that you all are raising some amazing girls out there? I really love this age group, the young women in their teenage and young adult years. I'm always impressed with their intelligence these days, they are smart! and also how hard they work, the things they navigate in today's world that I didn't necessarily have to face. . . Today's episode is about considering how to model to the younger generation, how to help the young women in your life cultivate a sense of belonging with each other; being willing to embrace the friendships in your life from a place of curiosity and non-judgement. This age group can set up a tone or a them for the rest of women's lives, with their ability to enjoy each other. I've noticed a theme with my clients with needing to heal resentments from the past with friendships gone awry, and I'm always so proud of women who put forth the effort to have the hard conversations, clean up the hurt feelings, and who conclude that friendships with other women are worth all of it. This can be a tender area for a lot of us. I've found that there are some old wounds from friendships gone south that can hurt for years, and we tend to carry those experiences into adulthood. But today's conversation will help you consider how we CAN heal old wounds, we can shift this dynamic, and move forward, if that is something that is calling to you. Join me in the conversation, I asked my friend, Lisa Nelson, to share her insights with how she thinks about women friendships and how her approach is not only possible, it's the best way.

The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, is holding its annual meeting in Salt Lake City next week. Lawmakers, mostly Republicans, from around the country will converge on Utah. There, they'll meet with representatives from the private sector to discuss public policy proposals that may be implemented in statehouses around the country. Those proposals take the form of “model legislation” that serves as a template legislators can use to craft their own legislation.Critics of ALEC say the group promotes “pro business” bills that are simply “copy and paste” proposals. HIJACK is the Minneapolis-based choreographic collaboration of Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder. HIJACK is the confluence and clash of two independent compositional/kinesthetic impulses. Their dances embrace juxtaposition. Their dances house unlikely intimates and question “who is the enemy?” Specializing in the inappropriate, HIJACK is best known for "short-shorts:" pop song-length miniatures designed to deliver a sharp shock.Over the last 25 years they have created over 100 dances and performed in venues ranging from proscenium to barely-legal. HIJACK manipulates context by employing a site-specific approach to every performance and toying with audiences' expectations. HIJACK has performed in New York (at DTW, PS122, HERE ArtCenter, Catch/Movement Research Festival, La Mama, Dixon Place, Chocolate Factory), Japan, Russia, Central America, Ottawa, Chicago, Colorado, New Orleans, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco, at Fuse Box Festival in Austin Texas, and Bates Dance Festival in Maine and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation. HIJACK questions where and for whom contemporary dance is performed, gigging regularly in both social settings and concert settings.  HIJACK has enjoyed long relationships with Red Eye Collaborations (as part of their Critical Core), Bryant Lake Bowl Theater where their 1996 "Take Me To Cuba" was the theater’s first ever dance concert), Zenon Dance School (where they have taught every Wednesday morning for 18 years), and Walker Art Center where they have performed in every imaginable context including the opening of the McGuire Theater, at Dyke Night, First Free Saturday children’s programming, in the sculpture garden, and in the light of the Benson Film Collection in the Mediateque. She has recently finished serving as a co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation grant to explore the societal perceptions of biometric technology in collaboration with Bojan Cukic, PhD (WVU); Stephanie Schuckers, PhD (Clarkson); Michael Schuckers, PhD (St. Lawrence University); Anil Jain, PhD (Michigan State); and Larry Hornack, PhD (WVU). This research has be published in America Identified: Biometric Technology and Society (MIT, 2010). She has also written several articles in journals including I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society, Public Administration Review, and the University of Chicago Policy Review. My guest will be Lisa Nelson. She is a Registered Dietitian and a heart health nutritional expert who was a 1999 Cum Laude Graduate from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Exercise Science. According to Lisa, unfortunately, she has been blessed with crummy genetics. She has a strong family history of heart disease and her own cholesterol level has hovered around 200 since her early twenties. She had a grandmother that died from a heart attack at age 69, a grandfather that died of a heart attack a year before she was born, another grandfather that had diabetes and was legally blind for as long as she can remember and recently didn't recover from a quadruple by-pass surgery, and her remaining grandmother lives with diabetes. Since graduation Lisa has enjoyed working in community nutrition. She worked directly with men and women struggling with weight, elevated blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. She saw firsthand how important her support was for those under her care to stay on the right track.
