Episode 30: Body Safety and Abuse Prevention: Keeping Kids Safe with Feather Berkower @parentingsafechildren This week Rachael has a very important conversation with Feather Berkower, a leader and well known author in child sexual abuse prevention. Feather educates us on ways we can protect our children when we are not with them both by having tough conversations with adults and teaching them "body safety" and consent from the start. Feather emphasizes the importance of pushing through our own discomfort to have these tough conversations for the sake of our kids. The uncomfortable truth is that most of us either are survivors or know a survivor of abuse. In this necessary episode, Rachael and Feather discuss the current stats for sexual abuse (which are shocking) and how to teach children protection skills without scaring them. Feather shares what makes a child most vulnerable to abuse, and the signs to look out for that abuse may have occurred. Feather also offers tips on ways we can speak to friends and family about the values we are teaching our children in relation to body safety and how to begin having conversations around this topic at a very young age.  Feather is a licensed clinical social worker who holds a Master's of Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. This week, Kate and Deb have an important and moving conversation with Feather Berkower about childhood sexual abuse and what we can do as parents to protect our kids from sexual assault.  April is childhood sexual abuse prevention month. The more informed and empowered we are as mothers and parents, the more empowered we can help our kids to be, and the less likely they are to experience this type of trauma.  Feather Berkower, Founder of Parenting Safe Children, is a licensed clinical social worker and one of the nation's leading experts in child sexual assault prevention. She has dedicated her career — which now spans over three decades — to educating parents and youth professionals on how to make their communities “off limits” to child sexual assault. They are never going to reveal names in the interest of protecting a person's anonymity. And on a regular basis, the two sit down with their girls to make sure what they share on this podcast is okay with them.  So please know that anytime you hear specific details, Kate and Deb are really thoughtful and take into consideration how these examples might impact others in their lives. Tonight's special guest is Tamra Gregory from Littleton, Colorado, a child abuse survivor, parent and activist who we met recently through NAASCA family member Feather Berkower, also from Colorado. Now middle aged, Tamra was a victim of sexual assaults occurred between the ages of 8 and 12, by family members and a swimming instructor. She reports, "I have been in and out of therapy both individual and group beginning in my 20's through my 40's. In retrospect, a very difficult divorce, my 2nd, was a pivotal event in my healing. The pain of this divorce dislodged me from the anger stage of grief. I think I had been stuck there for 40 plus years." She began telling her story to close friends. While was working on her MPA and enrolled in an emotional intelligence course, Tamra was required to write a bio. It was another opportunity to share her story (with 26 other people) and reap the support that occurs when one takes the risk to be vulnerable and authentic. "I have never confronted my abusers," she says, "but I have shared my story with other family members and although they have expressed sympathy for me, none have really taken a stance in opposition of them." Tamra goes on, "Needless to say, I do not engage with any of them now. The sad part for me is missing all of the family gatherings and missing seeing my extended family." A firm believer in Feather Berkower's work, her Parenting Safe Children web site and her book "Off Limits: A Parent's Guide to Keeping Kids Safe from Sexual Abuse," Tamra is busy giving back. "I spend my personal time volunteering with groups that provide mentor-ship and support for kids in the foster care system."

Tonight we'll focus on the topic of adult responsibility in protecting children from sexual abuse. Feather says, "I see in my work repeatedly, prevention education focused on children and adults relying on children to protect themselves. It is my fervent belief that although kids can learn to protect themselves with important skills, ultimately it is up to adults to protect kids, not kids to protect themselves." Before founding Parenting Safe Children, Feather managed a regional chapter of the Child Assault Prevention Program, which delivers school-based curricula to protect children and teens from bullying and sexual assault. Feather is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds a Master's of Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. She conducts media interviews, workshops, and private consultations throughout the United States regarding issues of child sexual abuse and safety.

Tonight's special guest is Feather Berkower from Colorado, a returning NAASCA family member and a 27-year veteran in child sexual abuse prevention. Using a community-based approach, she has trained over 100,000 school children, parents and professionals! Her highly-regarded workshop, Parenting Safe Children, empowers adults to keep children safe from sexual abuse. Summer is here, and there are extra concerns for our children. Feather says to parents, "As you finish enrolling your children in summer programs and gear up for their first day, there are a few conversations you might have with program directors, instructors, counselors, and your kids about body safety." She warns us, "The goal of any screening is to invite caregivers onto your prevention team. It's not an interrogation, but rather a conversation." Feather has a way of making difficult topics less scary, and consistently impresses audiences with her knowledge, commitment, and warmth. Parenting Safe Children helped to inspire "Off Limits," a parenting book that will change the way you think about keeping kids safe. "Off Limits" presents easy-to-follow guidelines for making children, homes, and communities off limits to child sexual abusers.
