Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
Some of the worst kinds of abuse happen right in front of us—often hidden behind love, care, and even medicine. In this episode, Jill sits down with returning guest Andrea Dunlop and her co-author and colleague Mike Weber to talk about their book, The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is a disturbing form of medical child abuse, which we have covered on the podcast before, where a caregiver—usually a mother—makes a child sick or pretends they are, all for attention and sympathy. Andrea, a podcast host and expert on MBP, and Mike, a seasoned law enforcement officer with years of experience in child abuse cases, highlighted what they've learned from investigating these heartbreaking stories. They explain why these cases are so hard to catch, the legal system's challenges in prosecuting perpetrators, and the chilling similarities between MBP and child sexual abuse. And make sure to stick around until the end of the episode, where Jill and Emily wrap up with a debrief about the emotional toll of confronting such tough realities. Listen and Learn: The shocking truth of Munchausen by Proxy and its hidden dynamics The similarities between Munchausen by Proxy and child sexual abuse and the deep manipulation at play How skilled manipulators exploit medical systems and doctors' blind spots to hide abuse. Why even law enforcement, judges, and doctors might fail to recognize this devastating abuse Why are false accusations often believed more than the reality of underreported child abuse cases? Why is it so hard to accept that abuse can happen in 'good' families, and how can we spot it? Andrea is the founder of Munchausen Support, the nation's only non-profit dedicated to supporting survivors and families affected by MBP, and a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children's MBP committee, where she serves alongside the country's foremost experts. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two children. About Mike Weber Mike Weber has forty years of law enforcement experience, including fifteen years as a crimes against children investigator. A few weeks ago the Department for Education published their draft guidance relating to trans and non-binary students in schools, which they are calling 'Gender Questioning Students'. This is draft non-statutory guidance, which is open for a 12 week consultation period ending in March. This is not new law, and it is not statutory guidance. Right now, what is happening in schools should not change, or be informed by, what this draft guidance says. Teachers and schools should continue to follow the statutory safeguarding advice set out in 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' which states: - 'The fact that a child or a young person may be LGBT is not in itself an inherent risk factor for harm.' - 'It is... vital that staff endeavour to reduce the additional barriers faced [by transgender children] and provide a safe space for them to speak out or share their concerns with members of staff.' We encourage you to read the draft guidance in full, to consider how this guidance, if implemented, would impact young people in schools, and share your thoughts through the consultation. Below are some relevant resources which may support you in doing so: 1. You can read the guidance in full here: https://consult.education.gov.uk/equalities-political-impartiality-anti-bullying-team/gender-questioning-children-proposed-guidance/supporting_documents/Gender%20Questioning%20Children%20%20nonstatutory%20guidance.pdf 2. The TNB Network website has a comprehensive response to the draft guidance (an easy read version is also available). You can find that report here: https://tnb.org.uk/our-law-toolkit 3. The TNB Network and Schools Out UK are hosting a free webinar for educators on Thursday 11th January at 6:30PM. This is an opportunity for educators to find out more about the draft guidance and consultation period. You can sign up here: TNBwebinar.eventbrite.com We will continue to share information and resources linked to the draft guidance and consultation period through our social media platforms and website. If you have specific questions regarding the information shared in this episode please get in touch, we'd be happy to support in any way we can: hello@prideprogress.co.uk www.prideprogress.co.uk
Late last night a well meaning and wonderful neighbor of ours sent us security footage of two guys that were walking around the corner of our property, shining a flashlight onto a concrete wall, talking with each other, going around the house again, and if that'd been it, I'd have assumed they were looking for a lost cat. But one of them flashed his light on our dome-shaped security camera and they quickly left the corner, then block altogether. We paused HULU, thanked the neighbor, then spent the next half-hour checking windows, door locks, turning on outside lights, recharging Ring cameras, that kind of thing. By the time I was in bed, I needed a palate cleanser. I turned on an episode of Better Call Saul. In it, a character with a young granddaughter spends the night on their hideaway sofa to keep them safe. I fell asleep dreaming about Pop Pop being on my sofa downstairs monitoring us through the night. Why am I sharing all this? Well, because I have two draft episodes in the hopper, but neither is screaming to be recorded. When that happens, I know the angels and guides have something else planned, either a person I've reached out to for an interview is going to have an opening, or an episode will craft itself. This is the latter. Someone somewhere needs to feel safe, and I hope this episode gives them the ways to shape their days to be both safe and sane. Dom welcomes in Pennsylvania State Representative Donna Scheuren back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a letter she wrote to the Perkiomen Valley School District explaining why she's in favor of having armed officers protect our State's schools. First, though, Dom reminds listeners why they may recognize Donna's name, telling of her role in keeping Souderton schools open during Coronavirus while serving in her role as a school board member, which she still holds. Then, Giordano and Rep. Scheuren delve into the topic at hand, with Donna explaining how officers in schools could indeed work, telling Dom of the way we can pay these security guards and telling of the value that these security officers would bring. Donna explains that she'd suggest that the officers considered have solid experience and background in law enforcement, suggesting retired members of the Police force from the community. The Federal Commission on School Safety rescinded this policy in 2018 after speaking with local education leaders around the country about best practices in terms of school safety. The Obama-era policy disregards student behavior and coerces school officials to maintain quotas of students who are disciplined based on a student's race or ethnicity.
