Louise Warren is a great believer in common sense, thoughtfulness and empathy. It's these driving forces that have closely informed the way she and her partner Anthony have for the past 10 years managed their multi-award winning accommodation business, Mt Hay Retreat in Berry, New South Wales. Comprising only a handful of individual private suites built on a family-owned property purchased in the mid 1980's, Louise and Anthony opened the doors to Mt Hay Retreat in 2015, and have since been on a mission to ensure each and every guest departs their stay feeling both restored and inspired. In recent years, Louise and Anthony have won an impressive array of awards for their ongoing commitment to true hospitality, sustainability and inclusion, including taking out gold at the 2024 New South Wales Tourism Awards and Silver at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards. Louise has been someone I've long admired and wanted to chat with for a few years now and this conversation certainly didn't disappoint. Please enjoy. As a former marketer for the likes of Kip&Co, Milligram, Flexicar and wishlist.com.au, Kimberly Palmer has a toolbox of skills that most hosts could only dream of. Having set up Harper's Cottage in 2019, her first short-term rental in the small yet charming hamlet of Malmsbury, about an hours' drive north-west of Melbourne, Kimberly completed an apprenticeship of sorts in hosting, learning the in's and out's of what it took to host a property that not only attracted incredible guest reviews but was also financially sustainable. More recently, Kimberly, her dog Harper and her now partner Darren closed the doors on Harper's Cottage, and have focused their attention on their exciting, newer joint project, The Botanist's Retreat in Castlemaine. A little larger than Harper's Cottage, The Botanist's Retreat has enabled Kimberly to build on her previous experience as a host and a marketer to create a truly unique offering underpinned by creativity, empathy and a desire to leave her guests feeling truly inspired and restored. And with the added bonus of being located in a town with a growing guest demand thanks to its vibrant arts, cultural and food landscape. I had an absolute blast chatting with Kimberly a short while ago and I'm sure you, too, will love this chat today. Behind every great host, there's often an even greater back-room support team and Monica Orrego and her team at Thriving Tasmania are just that. Following her bold, brave move from Colombia to Australia in 2012, Monica has worn many hats in the hospitality sector including housekeeper, host and, building on her original career in accounting and finance, administration and strategy extraordinaire. In recent times, she's been lapping up life in Tasmania, including setting up her own 'back-room' operations business supporting hospitality and tourism professionals, Thriving Tasmania, and recently joining the Short Term Accommodation Association of Australia as one of their two Tasmanian committee members. With her background as a travel writer and having consulted in PR, Sheriden Rhodes, my first return guest on Hosting With Heart, was more than well-equipped to embark on her hosting journey three and half years ago during the height of Covid. More recently, however, with an array of achievements under her belt as a result of the incredible success she's had hosting her own property, The River Haus in Morpeth, New South Wales, she's somewhat unexpectedly taken on the role of co-host for another property, Mister Brooks on Brown in neighbouring Newcastle. Only a month into this newfound foray, Sheriden has discovered first-hand how enjoyable and rewarding the role of being a co-host is, especially given the immense professional knowledge and practical experience she's been able to bring to the table. And not only has it been rewarding for her, but having such a personal touch is thus far leading to a happier, more confident and more financially successful property owner and, most importantly, delivering a more consistent, high quality experience for guests. This is a very cool look at Jimmy Page's music mere months before the formation of Led Zeppelin. May 29, 1968 at the Concord Colosseum had The Yardbirds playing a very cool bluesy/psychedelic set to a very lucky audience. Given that Clapton, Beck, and Page all gestated within the Yardbirds, it's safe to say the Yardbirds were a guitar band. Unfortunately, they were marketed as a pop combo, so as the 60's evolved into the wilder, more improvisational psychedelic areas, the disconnect between their record company and the band became unsustainable. The band folded shortly after this gig, leaving Jimmy with the Yardbirds name. I play Mr. You're a Better Man Than I, Heartful of Soul, and a wild and improvisational I'm A Man. I find it interesting that I'm a Man is the song in which the band stretches out and jams, rather than Dazed and Confused, which was also in the setlist. This a very cool snapshot of a very cool time in music, as well as the future of Led Zeppelin.
As someone who has spent a great deal of time travelling across Australia in recent years, Charlie Douty knows first-hand what it's like to experience discrimination as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community. In response, he's made it his mission to do something positive to address this and in February of this year launched Welcome With Pride, an inclusion, training and accreditation program for tourism and hospitality businesses of all shapes and sizes in Australia. Developed through community research in conjunction with over 1000 LGBTIQ+ travellers, Welcome With Pride's programs directly reflect the voices and real-world needs of this diverse community. To date, Charlie has delivered inclusivity training to thousands of businesses in partnership with industry leaders such as ATEC, Hilton, Destination New South Wales and Tourism Western Australia. He firmly believes LGBTIQ+ people should have the freedom to express themselves authentically and feel that powerful feeling of belonging when they're on holiday. It was my great pleasure to chat with Charlie recently about all he's achieved to date and his many exciting plans for the future and I've no doubt you'll get as much value out of listening to this conversation as I did having it. What do the teens of 2025 really need to grow and thrive? How is being a teen NOW different from “back in the day”? In this heartful and eye-opening episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I have the pleasure of sitting down with education leader and founder of Many Roads, Will Kirsop, for a thought-provoking conversation all about teens and tweens. Will shares why traditional academics often fall short in teaching essential life skills like empathy, active listening, and resilience—and how these very skills are key to helping our kids navigate an increasingly complex world. From the pressures of social media to the uncertainty of AI and job markets, today's teens are facing challenges that most of us never had to. Will and I also dig into the importance of self-compassion as a foundation for resilience and growth. He offers tangible strategies for parents who want to support their teens with intention and purpose. Even if your kiddos are not *quite* teens yet, there are nuggets of wisdom for all parents in this episode. Listen and share! Reach out for support too, whether it's support for your teen or support for yourself--you are not meant to do this alone! In this inspiring episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I have the pleasure of welcoming the incredible Jeanne Wolz—entrepreneur, career alignment coach, and founder of Sirens Rising. Jeanne joins the podcast to share her personal journey from educator to purpose-driven business owner, and how she now helps women and non-binary folks align their careers with their deepest callings. Jeanne and I dig into what it really means to listen to your calling, move through the fear that comes with it, and take small but powerful steps toward creating a life—and career—that feels meaningful. This conversation goes beyond just personal growth; it's also about how we, as parents, can model courage and action for our kids. Jeanne helps us explore how embracing our own callings and standing up for what we believe in helps raise children who are empowered to do the same. This episode is a gentle reminder to all of us that taking action isn't just brave—it's a vital part of who we are. By taking one small step at a time, and empowering our kids to do the same, we really can make a difference. Motherhood is often shaped by the beliefs and expectations we've inherited—but what if we could rewrite the script? In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm chatting with Dr. Gertrude Lyons, an author, Life Coach and creator of Rewrite the Mother Code LLC. Do you ever find yourself getting overwhelmed or dysregulated when your child gets overwhelmed or dysregulated? Ah-hem, yes. We ALL do. And even though we may have the tools in our toolbox, it's challenging to use them in that exact right moment. In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm talking mindfulness with with Dr. Christopher Willard, a clinical psychologist and author. We have a very heartful conversation about mindfulness and emotional regulation. We're digging into the power of being responsive rather than reactive — a skill every parent can benefit from. Dr. Willard shares his own journey into mindfulness, offering simple, practical tips to make mindfulness an enjoyable and accessible part of daily life for both parents and kids. You'll also get a sneak peek into Dr. Willard's upcoming book, Feelings Are Like Farts, which uses (fart) humor to help kids better understand their emotions. When she's not busy managing Milton Beef, her family's successful ethical beef farm, or helping support the local refugee community, you'll find my guest on today's episode of Hosting With Heart, Janelle Wallace, busily welcoming guests to her newly opened, fully accessible hempcrete retreat, Figtree Cottage of Milton. Janelle's journey to becoming a host was lined with many twists and turns, but she's ultimately created a property with such an abundance of accessible and sustainable features that upon listing it on the Heartful platform in late 2024, it immediately assumed the No.1 spot. The research is showing us that our kids are not okay. They are anxious, depressed, and worried. We have to do something, and my guest today has one solution that is actually very simple. Play! More unstructured, unsupervised, rough and tumble play time. I have Rusty Keeler, Playscape Designer and Author, joining me on the Heartful Parent Podcast today to break down all things play, playscapes, and the importance of letting our kids just BE. So. What is play? Why is it important? What happens when our kids don't get enough play? How do we help our teens and tweens play? With over 30 years of experience in the field, Rusty shares his wisdom on the power of independent play for fostering resilience and emotional well-being in children. A “free-range” childhood has many benefits, including combating ever present anxiety and depression that haunts our kids, tweens, and teens. Rusty is sharing insights for parents who want to nurture happier, healthier kids. Rusty and I also explore how we can design inclusive, natural play spaces that benefit not just younger children but also older kids and teens. Listen, and share, to help reimagine play and give your child the tools they need to thrive in a fast-paced world. Have you ever considered how the way we parent connects to bigger societal systems like white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism? In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I have the privilege of sitting down with Jen Lumanlan—host of Your Parenting Mojo podcast and author of Parenting Beyond Power—for a thought-provoking conversation about how traditional parenting methods can unknowingly reinforce these power structures. Jen helps us see how discipline and authority play into these systems and explore how a more heartful, mindful approach to parenting can create lasting change in our families and beyond. Jen also points out how balancing our own needs with our kids' needs can actually foster connection, respect, and collaboration. And by recognizing the needs of others, we can in turn break down the power structures that are prevalent in everyday life right now. This episode is packed with insights and practical tools to help you rethink discipline, shift power dynamics, and create a home environment rooted in empathy and mutual understanding. Pass this episode along to at least 2 other parents, and you'll make a difference not only in your life and their lives, but it could begin to shift the world as a whole. I am answering 2 listener questions in this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast! Question #1: What do we do when we are watching our teens & tweens navigate relationships? How much do you give advice and how much do you let them figure out on their own? Young relationships can be tricky, and there is a lot to learn. So when do you step in? When do you stay out of it? My advice is to lean in with empathy and curiosity and then to ask a key question: what would you like to do to move forward? Your teen will probably surprise you! Question #2: What should I do about my child's cussing? Let's talk about modeling and setting boundaries, because guess what…you really can't control your child's language. You can control your reaction to it though, so let's start there. Get your parenting question answered, email me christy@theheartfulparent.com Rate, review, and share! In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm welcoming the inspiring Dr. Deena Kara Shaffer, founder and CEO of Awakened Learning. Our conversation is packed with insights and actionable tips for uncovering learning strategies to help your kids learn HOW to learn. AI can get a bad rap, but it is a truly powerful tool that can make a difference in helping our kids form study habits that can span across subject areas and support them as students of all subjects, not just cramming for that chemistry test. Deena shares strategies that support students, parents, and professionals in navigating the demands of learning and life. From time management to task prioritization and study techniques, she shares practical tools like AI-based assignment calculators and the power of breaking down overwhelming tasks into manageable steps. 'Let bygones be bygones.' 'Forgive and forget.' These two common sayings are how many of us have been taught to view forgiveness. Sometimes those ways of “forgiving” just don't sit quite right. So, this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast aims to shift that perspective a little bit. Forgiveness Coach, Brenda Reiss is my guest and she is here to help us explore the profound impact of forgiveness on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being, especially within the parenting space. Brends presents us with a 5-step process to redefine and embrace forgiveness. She emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and walks us through how to get to a place of peace and empowerment in our lives. Brenda does not want you to let it go, forget it happened, or try to figure it out on your own, which makes this such a fascinating conversation. You'll walk away from this conversation ready to tackle radical forgiveness for yourself and feel empowered doing so. BUT not all gratitude practices are created equal! While even just listing things you are grateful for can benefit your overall health, today I'm sharing some ways to take your gratitude practice a little deeper. And I'm giving you some ideas of things you could do to help deepen the connection you have with your family by inviting more gratitude into your lives. No matter if it's lemons or a bomb cyclone, I'm here for you. I'd love to hear how you're inviting more gratitude into your life. Reach out, christy@theheartfulparent.com. And pass this episode along to someone you appreciate so they can invite more gratitude into their lives too. Resources Ep 6 | Heartful Parenting Practice: Family Meetings
Learning multiple languages can benefit our kids in more ways than just being able to speak two or more languages. Being bilingual, or multilingual, can give kids more confidence and increase their ability to use both sides of their brains. Above all else, it can give kids an understanding of other cultures and provide them with tools to navigate a multicultural world. Dr. Sugely Solano is an Administrator of Multilingual Learners and has over 16 years of experience as a school counselor, ESOL teacher, coordinator, and administrator of multilingual learners. As an English language learner and language enthusiast, she advocates for multilingual learners' education. Dr. Solano collaborates with parents, teachers, and leaders in the school district where she works. Dr. Solano joins me on the Heartful Parent Podcast today to discuss the challenges she faced while pursuing her own education, which motivated her to become a school counselor and help others. Dr. Solano and I touch on the importance of bilingualism and the cultural and cognitive benefits of learning multiple languages. She also shares some advice for those listeners who would like to support your own child on their language-learning journey. I love October and I love Halloween. How about you? HOWEVER, the pumpkin patch, trunk-or-treating, and fall festival season can get a little overwhelming. Well, rather than do All.The.Things, this year I'm inviting you to join me in taking back Halloween. And by that I mean, let your kids be kids, go out on October 31st and trick-or-treat to their little heart's desire. Stop making Halloween more complicated and overwhelming by participating in more activities than bring you joy. Stop taking the fun out of Halloween by taking your child to alternate activities instead of around your own neighborhood, or a nearby neighborhood: on Halloween to go door to door. It's actually really simple, and easy, to have a fun and safe Halloween. So let's dig into it! I hope this episode will help you have fun, feel like you can let your kids be kids, and balance fall fun with some time for yourself. This episode unpacks and explains the 222 Portal in February 2024. The significance of angel number 222. Other 222 portal themes will be shared including a 222 portal manifestation technique with a twist! Before I go into that I wanted to share with you that next week I'm doing a live self love workshop yes! This month is February or should I say Feb-you-ary and in recent times everyone talks about being mindful… but what about being heartful? Heartful is the live 60 minute workshop I'll be doing next Tuesday on the 27th at 7:30pm AEDT Sydney time and if you can't make it, there will be a replay sent out within 24 hours! It only costs $44.44 AUD which is roughly $30 USD. 222 Angel Number Meaning Now let' s talk about the 222 portal for 2024. 222 is an angel number for balance, trust, cooperation and harmony. Some believe this portal has been open since 2/2 which is the 2nd of February and the 22nd representing 222 is when the energy is at its peak. Let me break it down for you with themes that arise for the 222 portal in 2024; 222 portal - Love and Partnerships / Masculine and Feminine This year in particular there is the energy of love and partnerships. During the 222 portal, legendary lover planets, the ultimate power couple Venus and Mars are coming together in the sky. This happens every 2-3 years. Thus in February 2024 with this meeting, you can see it as kicking off a new cycle in terms of love, dating and relationships. Venus represents feminine energy, and is all about love, beauty, money and harmony. Mars represents masculine energy and is all about taking action, assertiveness and growth. This is symbolic of union in relationships as well as balancing masculine and feminine energies. Themes to consider: sensuality, sexuality, desire, attraction, magnetism and willpower. The last time Venus and Mars linked up was in March 2022 so it's worth reflecting on your attitude, approach and actions towards love, partnerships and the balance of feminine and masculine energy. Not only that this is taking place in a year where we have Aries in the north node (all about independence) and Libra in the south node (all about partnerships). Manifesting love with the 222 portal in 2024 Very well during this time it's a great to manifest and call in love. What are you desiring in partnership? It's also good to be discerning about dating around this time because the Venus Mars transit may activate soul contracts: it could be karmic, it could be your soul mate or twin flame or it could be a soul that's here to activate and teach you. Relationships during the 222 portal in 2024 If you currently have a partner, this transit is a great time to pause and reflect on how you are feeling in your relationship — is it time to rejuvenate and revamp? Reset - getting back on the same page? Refocus - if you've been neglecting your relationship and partner as a priority? Recement your connection with romance? There could be the opportunity to respark a relationship, reigniting attraction, being more playful and deepening intimacy, vulnerability and connection. Breakups and heartache during the 222 portal in 2024 If you are going through a break up the 222 portal has beautiful energy around healing and finding your own two feet again. Now, before you skip past this episode because of the word narcissism, please hear me when I say you will find the conversation in this episode more fascinating and applicable than you probably expect. I sure did. Dr. Mary Ann Little is my guest for this episode, and she is a clinical psychologist with years of experience in private practice and has written books about parenting and children including the book we're talking about today, Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Unselfish, Unentitled, Empathetic Children. Who doesn't want their children to be generous, well-rounded, and empathetic?! Dr. Little and I dig into successfully developing the four structures in parenting that will protect against narcissism in your child. She also describes how to find moderation in your parenting with your child's concept of self, emotional regulation, ability to accurately perceive, and positive modeling of love and relationships. So many good gems in this conversation.
