This incredible story touches on generational trauma, mental illness, self care, secure attachment, and creativity and. It is a perfect example of what it looks like to ignore our own needs in motherhood (perhaps simply because we haven't yet identified that they even exist) and what becomes available to us when we go inside and do the inner work first. Tracey reminds us that our own self care will always be in service of our children.

Today's episode is a bit different and a bit longer than our typical episodes. I am taking you on a journey with me. Like, a literal journey. A couple of weeks ago, I ventured, by myself, to the south of Japan for a 6-day walk on the Kumano Kodo- I recorded myself through this adventure, and so this episode today is a peek into my inner thoughts, my experiences along the trail, and interactions with people who I met along the way. For photos from Kate's walk, click here: https://www.katekripke.com/blog/is-it-ok-to-want-alone-time-in-motherhood The Kumano Kodō is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the Kii Peninsula, the largest peninsula of Japan. These mountainous trails are used by pilgrims to the "Kumano Sanzan" - the Three Grand Shinto Shrines of Kumano. Shinto (which is translated as “the way of the gods”) is Japan's native belief system and predates historical records. It overlaps in part with Buddhism, but is, in itself, its own religious faith. The focus of Shinto is Nature, and the way that it supports us, which for me is an easy place to put my spiritual self. The walk that I did took me over mountain passes, through dense forests and in and out of small Japanese villages along the way. I am hopeful that you get, if even just a little bit, an experience of this place, it's beauty and magic, and the way in which nature reminds us all to simply be exactly who we are. This walk got me out of my comfort zone and required me to, quite literally, walk my talk. I did, indeed, pull up my brave pants. So now, pull up a chair, and join me. Do you ever find yourself just expecting to be exhausted all the time as a mom? Have you just assumed that it's not possible to both be available to your child and also pursue the work that you love? Today, we are going to debunk some of the most widely held myths in motherhood- beliefs that ultimately lead to huge amounts of anxiety, depression, and burn out for the women who hold them. Here are the 12 myths to debunk: 1. Good moms love being with their kids all the time 2. If I wanted a baby and my child is healthy, I should just be grateful 3. Motherhood is just hard and it's normal to feel burned out. 4. If I just put my head down and plow through, it will get easier 5. I am a competent and smart woman, I shouldn't need help 6. If my child is distressed or struggling, it's my fault 7. I can't let me child see my struggles 8. It all goes so quickly, I should enjoy every moment 9. I can't do it all 10. Mothering requires sacrifice of self 11. Maternal and child Mental health means I'm happy all the time and so is my child 12. In this episode Kate and Deb discuss the integrative therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems therapy and how to use it with mothering. The Internal Family Systems Model is an approach to individual psychotherapy developed by Richard C. Schwartz in the 1980s. It combines systems thinking with the view that the mind is made up of relatively discrete sub-personalities, each with its own unique viewpoint and qualities. By learning how different parts function as a system and how the overall system reacts to other systems and other people, people in therapy can often become better able to identify the roots of conflict, manage any complications arising, and achieve greater well-being. The IFS model has 5 basic assumptions: The human mind is subdivided into an unknown number of parts. Each person has a Self, and the Self should be the chief agent in coordinating the inner family. Parts engaging in non-extreme behavior are beneficial to the individual. There is no such thing as a “bad part.” Therapy aims to help parts discover their non-extreme roles. Personal growth and development leads to the development of the internal family. Interactions between parts become more complex, allowing for systems theory to be applied to the internal system. Reorganization of the internal system may lead to rapid changes in the roles of parts. Adjustments made to the internal system will result in changes to the external system and vice versa. Therefore, both the internal and external systems need to be adequately assessed. Disclosure, Deb has been studying IFS for about 4 years and attempted to give a very simple description of the practice so listeners can start to understand the concept. This practice has many terms that she did not go into such as; “managers, firefighters, blending, unburdening” and so on. This was intentional because Kate and Deb did not want to overwhelm the listener. There are many great resources to deepen your understanding of this model, but some great book recommendations include “The Sum of All Parts” and “No Bad Parts” both by Richard Schwartz. In this episode, we will explore how to support tweens & teens when choosing how to dress. We discuss this complicated issue for parents as we unpack what is culture and trend, what is “appropriate” and what are our own triggers that get mixed up in the process. This is no easy topic and no right answer. But we left you with some questions to ask yourself when wrestling through this and questions and convos to ask your kiddos so we can continue to help them be critical thinkers. Some questions you might want to ask yourself are: How am I getting hooked by gender stereotyping? Have I explained to my kids that no matter what you wear, people will make a quick (and powerless I might add) judgment of you? Have you discussed the importance of not judging others for the way they're dressed? Have you explained that it's ok and normal to want to feel attractive to others, and that doesn't mean that you want to have sex or are attention-seeking? Have you discussed how industries will promote clothes to the pop culture that is historically based on the traditional male gaze which is an old message of men feeling entitled to women's bodies? (yes that's a big one) Have you talked about the fashion industry and how it affects the environment and body shaming culture? Try answering these 5 questions before discussing. What are appropriate clothes? Are the clothes appropriate for the weather? Do they still fit you? Are they appropriate for the activity they are wearing them Are the clothes or brands aligned with your values; ethically sourced, environmentally friendly, do they pay their workers adequate wages, are they made in all sizes for all body types, When wearing the clothes, do you feel physically comfortable? In this episode, Kate interviews Deb for part 2 of understanding adolescence. They start to explore the sexual exploration of the adolescent experience and key things to explore with your kiddos. Deb talks about the importance of family orientation vs peer orientation and emphasized how we, as the parents, want to be the source of sexual education; emotional, physical, and behavioral.
