This week in the Niche Cache we pay tribute to Chris Faiumu and Fat Freddy's Drop as part of a salute to Wellington with Wellington Saints winning the NBL and Wellington Phoenix winning an off-season friendly. We chat through a few Blackcaps points from their T20 tri-series in Africa and then break down the NBL final, as well as Tall Ferns in Asia Cup and the latest Tall Blacks squad. Then we have plenty of NZ Warriors matters to discuss after their NRL win vs Newcastle Knights and another NSW Cup win. The development pipeline at Mt Smart is thriving, versatility is a key factor in NRL success and Tanah Boyd is doing his job as halfback. The Phoenix development pipeline is also awesome with lots of youngsters on show in their win vs Wrexham and Tommy Smith departed Auckland FC, so we discuss the All Whites implications and who will step up for the Blue Riders. New Zealand hip-hop great King Kapisi says he will always be proud of Fat Freddy's Drop founder Chris Faiumu, for taking Wellington and South Pasific music to the world. Mr Faiumu, also known as DJ Mu or Fitchie, died suddenly on Wednesday. He was a pioneer of the New Zealand music scene, and a force behind Fat Freddy's Drop, one of the most successful bands to come out of Aotearoa. Ellen O'Dwyer reports.

I played the trombone in high school. I know what you're thinking: squeaky-voiced Jack running through a few scales on his big brass slide? Hello Ladies... But honestly the fact that my instrument was seen as a bit quirky was kind of an attraction for me at the time. What the trombone wasn't —at least back then— was very cool. To my mind it was good for jazz band and good for a blast in orchestra, but I wasn't creative enough to find or even search for a different sound with my trombone. Brass had its place and that was that. But the year after I left high school, Based on a True Story hit record stores. I'd never heard of Fat Freddy's Drop, but I was played a song by a friend and I bought the album the day it was released. I know it was 2005, because I can literally remember buying the CD from a Sounds record shop. I can remember walking down Madras Street in Christchurch with it burning a hole in my bag, so excited to play it. Let me tell you, I've never thrashed an album so much in my life. The way it starts off so sparse, those simple plunking piano keys, and then builds and builds and builds. The sound was so exciting. So different. So cool. Man, I thought. If I'd known this kind of music existed, this blend of dub and reggae and jazz and soul, with its brass component, too! As much as I have enjoyed Glenn Miller arrangements, I might have branched out a bit further with my high school music mates and the old ‘Bone. I'm no celebrated music afficionado but it occurs to me that Fat Freddy's Drop are a prime example of musos' musos. They're a band which loosely formed from a crew who just like jamming. They're a band that loves to play live, that still just loves to improvise. And, at least from the outside, they seem utterly unconcerned with the trappings of rock'n'roll stardom, with glossy magazine covers, fame and riches. Forget your 3-minute, four-chord tricks to sell into the top 40 radio stations, if you've been to a Fat Freddy's concert, you'll know it can be hard sometimes to know when a song begins and ends. I also think there's a real, distinct New Zealand flavour to their music. There's something Pacific, something relaxed, unshaven, and unconcerned. The sound of the Kiwi summer road trip. For the year I lived in the States, I'd always crank it up any time I had an American in my apartment as if it were a statement of identity. It probably says a lot about the band's aspirations, motivations, and priorities that despite their incredible international success, the individual members of Fat Freddy's Drop aren't all household names in this country. I know next to nothing of their private lives. And of all the members, I reckon I'd only have been able to name two, off the top of my head, if you'd asked me earlier this week: Dallas (friend of the show), the singer, and Mu. Chris Faiumu founded Fat Freddy's Drop. He produced their music, and as DJ, his beats, blends, and samples were the foundation of so much of their art. I feel my experience with his work will be similar to that of so many others in New Zealand and around the world. I feel really saddened by news of his death, and so grateful, so grateful, for the music he made that seriously has enriched my life. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of New Zealand's most influential music groups is back after five years out of the game. Fly My Pretties was first formed in 2004, and brought together musicians from a lot of well-known Kiwi bands to record live albums. The cast includes musicians from the Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Phoenix Foundation, and The Phoenix Foundation, among others, and was founded by Barnaby Weir and Mikee Tucker. Tomorrow marks their first release in five years, with their seventh album ‘Elemental'. Weir told Mike Hosking the project has turned out different to how he would have imagined it, but the core concept is still there. “I hope that there's still a lot of, y'know, more leads in it,” he said. “This new album is really strong, and y'know, in the future, I might not be on the stage, I might be just more of a mental kind of character involved with it, but the concept can just, y'know, continue.” And, as a special treat, Weir gave an exclusive, acoustic performance.

As broadcast August 12, 2021 with extra coconut for you podcast creole speakers.  Tonight we open the show celebrating the 71st birthday of Kid Creole, aka August Darnell, born on this date in The Bronx in 1950.  The founder of both Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and The Coconuts, a true mischievous creative titan of the game.  After the opener, we had nothing but new tunes beyond that in our first hour, with new joints from MF Robots, Paul & The Tall Trees, Brian Jackson, and so many other highly worthy candidates and friends of the program.  For our 2nd hour, there was lots of good in the rock world this week, but very notable huge swings & misses by Guns n Roses, Tom Morello, and Maneskin that are such car crashes we could not help but listen to the wreckage on air.  Great tunes otherwise from the likes of Dan Andriano & The Bygones, Jail Socks, and Slothrust as well to even out the palette.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Kid Creole & The Coconuts – EndicottMF Robots – Brand New DayMoses Patrou & The Soul Tune Allstars – Who's Gonna Save Me (From Myself)Sola Rosa – You Don't Know (Dizz1 remix)Paul & The Tall Trees – Love Doesn't Need To Be HeavyQuantic feat Nidia Gongora – Macumba de MareaPart II (34:22)El Michels Affair & Liam Bailey – FadedArjuna Oakes & Serebii – Satellites Brian Jackson & Jazz Is Dead – Bain de MinuitLittle Dragon – Water (FJK remix)Brandon Markell Holmes – Garden (Rouge Vogue remix)Fat Freddy's Drop – Bones (WAIRUNGA) Part III (65:01)Fake Names – It Will Take a LifetimeGuns n Roses – ABSURDTom Morello, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder – Highway to HellManeskin, Iggy Pop – I Wanna Be Your SlaveSlothrust – The Next Curse (ft Lzzy Hale)Part IV (95:04)Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – Go Get a Tattoo (ft Lynks)Dan Andriano and the Bygones – Sea LevelThe Last Gang – Noise Noise NoiseThe Vaccines – Alone StarJail Socks – Peace of MindThe Jaded Hearts Club – Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)
