Episode 11 arrives like golden hour at a summer festival, sun dipping low, energy high, and the air alive with rhythm. Opening with the laid-back groove of Fat Freddy's Drop's Ernie, the scene is set: barefoot in the grass, sound systems humming, and a crowd slowly swaying as the day transitions into night. The vibe builds through the uplifting blues textures of Conditions Are Right, before rolling into the iconic balearic rework of The Man With The Red Face, a moment that feels like a live brass section echoing across a packed field. As the sun fades, Dexter Wansel's Sweetest Pain and Amy Winehouse's Cupid bring warmth and soul, like that perfect festival lull where everyone reconnects and resets. The groove intensifies as Bernard Wright's Haboglabotribin' injects pure bass funk energy crowds dancing, hands in the air before Jamiroquai's Little L lifts things into full on festival euphoria. The blend of soulful house in Darryl Debonnas - Just to Be With You and the heartfelt pull of Angie Stone's Miss You captures that magic of shared moments under open skies. As night fully takes hold, Eric B. & Rakim's Know The Ledge cuts through with raw, timeless energy like a late-night set pulling everyone closer to the speakers. Closing with Raye's Nightingale Lane, the episode winds down like the final moments of a perfect festival day, lights dimming, music fading, but the feeling lingering long after. A seamless journey through soul, jazz, house, and hip-hop, Episode 11 captures that festival magic where music, people, and atmosphere collide into something unforgettable.

Sunday Sanctuary with Petra Bagust

Kia tau te rangimārie ki runga i a koutou. As-salamu alaykum. Shalom. Peace is so often something that we wish upon others, and even seek for ourselves. But what do we mean when we talk about peace? Can peace be more than just the absence of conflict, whether that is conflict within us or between people? In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, producer Sam talks to spiritual director Shannon Mawdsley, activist Adrian Leason, and the Lead Chaplain of the NZDF, Dave Lacey, to hear how their perspectives on peacemaking align....and how they don't. Petra then talks to Sunday Sanctuary regular Rev Frank Ritchie. They unpack what St Francis of Assisi meant when he prayed asking God to make him "an instrument of your peace". I played the trombone in high school. I know what you're thinking: squeaky-voiced Jack running through a few scales on his big brass slide? Hello Ladies... But honestly the fact that my instrument was seen as a bit quirky was kind of an attraction for me at the time. What the trombone wasn't —at least back then— was very cool. To my mind it was good for jazz band and good for a blast in orchestra, but I wasn't creative enough to find or even search for a different sound with my trombone. Brass had its place and that was that. But the year after I left high school, Based on a True Story hit record stores. I'd never heard of Fat Freddy's Drop, but I was played a song by a friend and I bought the album the day it was released. I know it was 2005, because I can literally remember buying the CD from a Sounds record shop. I can remember walking down Madras Street in Christchurch with it burning a hole in my bag, so excited to play it. Let me tell you, I've never thrashed an album so much in my life. The way it starts off so sparse, those simple plunking piano keys, and then builds and builds and builds. The sound was so exciting. So different. So cool. Man, I thought. If I'd known this kind of music existed, this blend of dub and reggae and jazz and soul, with its brass component, too! As much as I have enjoyed Glenn Miller arrangements, I might have branched out a bit further with my high school music mates and the old ‘Bone. I'm no celebrated music afficionado but it occurs to me that Fat Freddy's Drop are a prime example of musos' musos. They're a band which loosely formed from a crew who just like jamming. They're a band that loves to play live, that still just loves to improvise. And, at least from the outside, they seem utterly unconcerned with the trappings of rock'n'roll stardom, with glossy magazine covers, fame and riches. Forget your 3-minute, four-chord tricks to sell into the top 40 radio stations, if you've been to a Fat Freddy's concert, you'll know it can be hard sometimes to know when a song begins and ends. I also think there's a real, distinct New Zealand flavour to their music. There's something Pacific, something relaxed, unshaven, and unconcerned. The sound of the Kiwi summer road trip. For the year I lived in the States, I'd always crank it up any time I had an American in my apartment as if it were a statement of identity. It probably says a lot about the band's aspirations, motivations, and priorities that despite their incredible international success, the individual members of Fat Freddy's Drop aren't all household names in this country. I know next to nothing of their private lives. And of all the members, I reckon I'd only have been able to name two, off the top of my head, if you'd asked me earlier this week: Dallas (friend of the show), the singer, and Mu. Chris Faiumu founded Fat Freddy's Drop. He produced their music, and as DJ, his beats, blends, and samples were the foundation of so much of their art. I feel my experience with his work will be similar to that of so many others in New Zealand and around the world. I feel really saddened by news of his death, and so grateful, so grateful, for the music he made that seriously has enriched my life. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of New Zealand's most influential music groups is back after five years out of the game. Fly My Pretties was first formed in 2004, and brought together musicians from a lot of well-known Kiwi bands to record live albums. The cast includes musicians from the Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Phoenix Foundation, and The Phoenix Foundation, among others, and was founded by Barnaby Weir and Mikee Tucker. Tomorrow marks their first release in five years, with their seventh album ‘Elemental'. Weir told Mike Hosking the project has turned out different to how he would have imagined it, but the core concept is still there. “I hope that there's still a lot of, y'know, more leads in it,” he said. “This new album is really strong, and y'know, in the future, I might not be on the stage, I might be just more of a mental kind of character involved with it, but the concept can just, y'know, continue.” And, as a special treat, Weir gave an exclusive, acoustic performance. On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Dallas Tamaira  Dallas is the lead singer of Fat Freddy's Drop, one of New Zealand's most popular bands of all time.  His voice is unmistakable as the focal point of the seven-piece super group, but this year, for the first time in two decades, Dallas has released a solo EP, called Levels.  In this episode we talk about the best stories across 20 years with Fat Freddy's, lessons from the road, finding sanctuary at the spacies, the origins of Fat Freddy's, NZ' best kept musical secret, fatherhood, his new music and much much more.  Dallas is one of my favourite artists and his music has been the background to nearly every summer I can remember. It was a real privelidge to get to share some time with him, and unpack the best bits from his incredible life in music.  Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.   If you'd like to hire one of our guests to speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.   This episode was brought to you from the Export Beer garden studio.
