Join new co-host JJ as she and Penn delve into a Millenial classic, "Looking For Alaska" by John Green. Published in 2005, right during peak Manic Pixie Girl times, the podcast delves into this trope as well as reminiscing about the times of post-9/11, Dubya, and how little guidance school counselors would give us.
Today we're starting a new unit of sad fiction picked by Asia. To start off this set of four single books we're starting with cult classic Looking for Alaska by John Green. A once controversial book for introducing young adults to young adult appropriate content, this book follows teenagers at boarding school as they rebel against a repressive system and search for the meaning of life. Miles, the Colonel, and Alaska are coming of age when an unfortunate tragedy strikes. They go through classic teen angst and hormonal development. The book accurately and humanly deals with the struggles of adolescence, and both hosts enjoy this book and its ultimately hopeful conclusion. Next week we will be reading a new book in one week, The Lovely Bones. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/throwback-paperback/support

Miles, or Pudge as he is often referred to, is searching for the "Great Perhaps". To him, that means something beyond the mundane. After much persuasion, his parents enroll him in a boarding school in Alabama. It's there that Miles finds not only a taste of the "Great Perhaps" but also himself. His infatuation with his classmates, mainly a girl named Alaska, led him down a path of self-growth and sorrow. John Green finds the perfect words to keep the readers invested in the personal development of Miles. He beautifully (in a way only John Green can) weaves sentences together to leave us in awe of the story. This novel is filled with tear-jerking events and we spend a great deal dissecting them all in this week's episode. Join us as we dive deep into Looking for Alaska by John Green.
Skype is not working. We repeat: Skype is NOT working. You guys, we start off wobbly this week as we must begin the show without our trusty Skype intro jingle, but like the true professionals we are, we keep on keeping on. Brandi is getting ready for her big trip north to Alaska, and Wells re-shares the story of when he pretended to be from Alaska. He also shares that he has received a request to audition for a romcom, so naturally he is going to be the next international heartthrob (watch out, Sarah). Brandi gives us a little Adams wedding insight as she dishes on Wells' wedding invitations, and Wells dishes on Blake's new show. Oh, we don't have Bachelorette(s?) content for you this week because Wells is too busy/lazy to edit it in. But next week, maybe next week, YFTers... you'll just have to tune in. Love ya! Episode 30 is all about "Education in Fiction" and includes your hosts talking about some of their favorite (and least favorite) teachers in movies, shows, and books. This is a really fun episode! Chelsea shares the Cave Allegory from Plato's Republic and breaks down parts of Émile by Jean Jacques Rousseau. Katie takes a stand in defense of 13 Reasons Why as she describes how it's not a book/show that glorifies suicide, but rather a piece that really perfectly shows what guilt and trauma can look like in schools. Chelsea shares her love of Narnia and Katie breaks down all things Matilda and Miss Honey.Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy -Plato’s Middle Period Metaphysics and EpistemologyStanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - Jean Jacques RousseauWikipedia - Emile“Too Old for Narnia”: Belief, Fandom, and the End of Wonder" by Matt MikalatosStimulus information for those experiencing homelessness
