While Dire Straits were a solid band that had radio hits since their first album was released in 1978, there was nothing to portend the outrageous fortune they would find in 1985 with Brothers in Arms. Their previous album, Love Over Gold, failed to go platinum in the US or produce any big radio hits. Twisting By The Pool from their 1983 EP was catchy but also kitschy and made some wonder if they were trying to parody the oldies instead of creating an homage. While the live album Alchemy was fantastic, it was not a huge seller. Lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler had success in the studio with Steely Dan and Bob Dylan, produced some great movie soundtracks and wrote songs for others like Private Dancer for Tina Turner. But he hadn't made a Dire Straits album that captured the public's imagination. Until they made Brothers In Arms in 1985.... Mark brought in a young keyboard player named Guy Fletcher to give his songs more texture and eventually brought in legendary session drummer Omar Hakim to lay down all the drum parts. The result was an album that hit #1 around the world selling more than 4.5 million in the UK, 9 million in the US and 30 million around the world. The single Money For Nothing topped the charts around the world and featured Sting singing the famous line I Want My MTV. Of course at the time MTV played videos by artists who wrote music and played instruments and between Sting's catchphrase and the cutting edge (at the time) computer animation, it went into heavy rotation and would be heralded as one of the greatest videos for years. But the sound was so crisp on this album it was used to sell CD players in stores and was the first record to sell more on CD than on LP, thanks in large part to recording on digital tape and Knopfler's never ending search for quality sound. Songs like Your Latest Trick and Why Worry may be mellow but you can hear every note. Walk Of Life was fun, upbeat track that featured 2 different videos for the US and UK markets. And while the second side of the album might not have featured the big hits as the first side, Knopfler's lyrics take on more serious notions like war, life and death. the final and title track brought up visions of pain from the Falklands War that had affected so many in the UK and Argentina and is seen as a respectful tribute to those who fought (and often played at military funerals0. You can't tell the story of MTV, the 1980s or Dire Straits without this album and we dug in for an in-depth conversation about its impact at the time and how it sound today. Plus, we have a little audio from Guy Fletcher talking about Dolby Atmos mixes for the upcoming 40th anniversary edition which will include a concert from the Live in 85 tour. In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. With creative savvy and a touch of fandom, Tim explains how he secured a heartfelt Cameo from Aubrey Edwards, the renowned referee from All Elite Wrestling. Celebrating the milestone of reaching 400 episodes, Aubrey Edwards shared some kind words about Friends Talking Nerdy. Tim dives into the process—using the Cameo platform—to connect with a wrestling personality who is not only a fan but also a respected figure in the industry. This segment offers a fun peek into the strategic networking and passion that fuels the podcast's community spirit.3. Wrestling, Ethics, and the Netflix Docuseries “Mr. McMahon”The episode then turns its focus to the world of professional wrestling with an in-depth discussion on the Netflix documentary “Mr. McMahon.” Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dissect the film's portrayal of Vince McMahon's tumultuous career and the various controversies that have shadowed his legacy. The hosts debate the ethical dilemmas wrestling fans face as they reconcile their admiration for the spectacle with the problematic aspects of McMahon's history. Their discussion is both analytical and impassioned, weighing the documentary's revelations against the cultural mythos of wrestling. Listeners are invited to reflect on the complexities of fandom—how one can celebrate the art of wrestling while critically engaging with its darker undercurrents. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. English poet, journalist and literary critic James Fenton once stated that “A cabaret song has got to be written - for the middle voice, ideally - because you've got to hear the wit of the words. And a cabaret song gives the singer room to act, more even than an opera singer.” Words that I think our hero this season, Mark Knopfler took to heart when penning one of the songs on Side B of Dire Straits' third album, Making Movies. But what will Corey think of that abrupt and very hard left turn into the world of the Munich gay scene? Will he take to a return to a slower pace on Hand in Hand, will Kev make any more spurious claims about lyrics based on his complete misreading of a very clear musical reference? Mick Jagger, Madonna, and David Bowie were amongst the megastars who participated in the ‘I Want My MTV!' campaign which debuted on 1st March, 1982; credited for getting music television to a sustainable number of cable providers and thereby kickstarting a whole genre: the music video.  Ad guru George Lois had come up with the slogan, inspired by an earlier cereal commercial he'd worked on. The promotion hit such a nerve with Generation X that it even made it into a hit single, when Dire Straits and Sting sang ‘I Want My MTV' in ‘Money For Nothing'.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the music and cable industry both needed persuading of the merits of taking the new channel; consider why adopting the segregated playlists approach of American popular radio was a mis-step for the originators of the network; and reveal why so many British artists played a role in the early days of the playlist… Further Reading: ‘How MTV changed pop music and TV forever - but it all began in cramped room above deli' (Mirror, 2021): https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/how-mtv-changed-pop-music-24659108 ‘George Lois Dead: Icon of Ads & Magazines Popularized ‘I Want My MTV'' (The Hollywood Reporter, 2022): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/lifestyle-news/george-lois-dead-icon-ads-magazine-i-want-my-mtv-1235266407/#! ‘I Want My MTV' (MTV, 1982): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGZSWdh17l0 We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

In 1985, the British rock band Dire Straits released the song “Money for Nothing.” It is an undeniable rock classic. It also is a superb entry point for—of all things—judging the morality of capitalism. It is worth a listen as well as a classroom lesson. The lyrics relay the perspective of a laborer. As he sees a video of rock musicians on MTV, he expresses envy. He strains in the delivery of appliances while the musicians enjoy great wealth and adoration with little hardship:We got to install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveriesWe got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TVsListen hereNow that ain't workin', that's the way you do itYou play the guitar on the MTVThat ain't workin', that's the way you do itMoney for nothin' and your chicks for freeAs the song proceeds, the envy gives way to anger and resentment. There is injustice—even absurdity—in how wealth is distributed! An honest day's work should be more valued! No shit.“Money for Nothing” is the dream of every generation. For society as a whole, there are two ways to get it. The first way is theft on a national scale. That means the extraction of goods and services from neighboring lands through warfare (i.e., pillaging and enslavement). The second way is through a set of property rights which aids the exchange of values and which permits innovation to flourish. For ninety nine percent of human existence, we have chosen extraction. More recently, the right liberal attitudes toward commerce and diversity have won favor enough to inform our institutions. While we still remain uneasy about the free-wheeling quality of markets, I think we can all agree that exchange is better than the old way to get “money for nothing and your chicks for free.”     -  Scott Drylie -Assistant Professor of Economics, Cost Analysis, and Acquisition Management at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio.

Early computer animation. Sports bloopers. Pastel sport coats. And "I want my MTV." On the surface, it's hard to get more "1980s" than Dire Straits during their "Brothers in Arms" era. But peak MTV era was also quite superficial, and with Dire Straits, there was always more just below the surface. Even with mega radio and music video hits like "Walk of Life" and "Money For Nothing," 1985's "Brothers in Arms" is yet another album with frontman and guitar god Mark Knopfler weaving stories about the world's castaways, about blue collar workers, and war. (In fact, almost all of side 2 is about war.) For those for whom the big "hits" were an entry point to the band were probably surprised at the depth of Dire Straits' music and lyrics.   You can listen to Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits on iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, and Amazon, although it's probably best on vinyl.

In this week's podcast, Mike and Elizabeth discuss research on leadership and stress.  In what may at first seem like counterintuitive findings, military and government leaders had lower levels of the stress related hormone cortisol than non-leaders. A sense of control was a significant mediator of anxiety and stress. We talk about contemporary labor relations and social applications of the findings, as well as some similar research that clarifies who may benefit the most from a sense of control in the workplace.  Podcast notes: Sherman, G. D., Lee, J. J., Cuddy, A. J. C., Renshon, J., Oveis, C., Gross, J. J., & Lerner, J. S. (2012). Leadership is associated with lower levels of stress. PNAS Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 109(44), 17903–17907.
