What happens when precarious urban cultural laborers take data collection, laws, and policymaking into their own hands? Buskers have been part of our cities for hundreds of years, but they remain invisible to governments and in datasets. From nuisance to public art, this cultural practice can help us understand the politics of data collection, archives, regulatory frameworks, and urban planning. Busking also responds to underlying questions on the boundaries of the rights to the city, and who has a voice in shaping how our cities are planned and governed.A transnational exploration of street performance, Urban Music Governance examines the intricate limits of legality, data visibility, and resistance from the perspective of those working at the social and regulatory margins of society. Based on a decade of fieldwork in Rio de Janeiro and Montreal, this book offers a lively account of why such an often-overlooked practice matters today.By investigating the role of busking in contemporary society, Urban Music Governance presents an original interdisciplinary study that exposes how power dynamics in policymaking decide issues of access—and exclusion—around us, above and below ground. Jess Reia is an Assistant Professor of Data Science at the University of Virginia, USA, working on data justice, technology policy, and urban governance. When you come back after several years to a city where you used to live, what do you notice? What has change? What has stayed the same? What have you forgotten about in your time away? In this episode from our archives, Katy arrives in Rome after four years away, and immediately  notices something that—once ubiquitous on the streets of Rome—is now missing: accordionists. This sparks a conversation about what we notice, what we take for granted as being an eternal aspect of the city, and how a city can change before your very eyes. The famous song that Katy plays (and Tiffany recognizes but can't name) is Ma il Cielo è Sempre Più Blù by Rino Gaetano. Hear this episode transformed into a bedtime story by Sleep With Me podcast's Drew Ackerman (aks Dear Scooter). **The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! In this week's episode Mark and Pete from their business and religious perspectives cover six of the most bizarre and fascinating stories making headlines. First up, we dive into the ongoing Birmingham bin dispute, where workers' strikes are causing rubbish to pile up across the city, leaving residents frustrated. Then, we discuss the controversy surrounding Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopics, including casting choices that have raised eyebrows due to a lack of authenticity. Next, we take a close look at President Trump's new tariffs, exploring their impact on global trade, U.S. manufacturing, and consumer prices. Moving on, we tackle a peculiar case where a judge in London called buskers “psychological torture,” sparking a debate about public space and noise pollution. In a more somber moment, we pay tribute to Betty Webb, the WWII codebreaker who recently passed away at 101, remembering her contribution to the war effort. Finally, we end on a royal note: King Charles is asked to play a carrot flute at an environmental event, raising questions about royal symbolism and the weirdness of modern celebrity culture. Louis Armstrong, Wild Man Fischer, Irving Berlin and Lucinda Williams all started out as buskers and Cary Baker's ‘Down On The Corner' traces the romance and influence of street players from Ancient Rome via Chicago's Maxwell Street to Elvis Costello outside the CBS conference and beyond. Cary, David and Mark chuck coins in the conversational hat, among them …  … the turban and rollerblades stagewear of Harry Perry aka “the Skating Sikh”.… Blind Arvella Gray who took up busking because of a gun battle. … the sight of Bongo Joe on his daily commute (a moped loaded with steel drums).   … what Mick Jagger learnt from Ramblin' Jack Elliott. … Ted Hawkins' journey from Venice Beach to Geffen Records. … the time Cary met Moondog dressed as a Viking and why he was a symbol of old New York. … how Billy Bragg learnt festival crowd control playing street corners. … Madeleine Peyroux, aged 15, playing Paris subways. … Jesse Fuller, father of the one-man band. … do buskers now make it via Instagram? … the only gig where you can play the same song repeatedly. … and when is busking just noise pollution? Order Cary Baker's Down On The Corner here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Down-Corner-Adventures-Busking-Street/dp/1916829104Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Despite the bombast and musicianship of the first busker in the field recording, it was the quieter and more subtle performance that grabbed my attention. Rotonda Foschini is an open, oval piazza with a gorgeous natural reverb, adding an extra dimension to this performance of 'La Vie En Rose'. "The natural reverb of the recording location was the starting point for the composition, as we imagined the reverb building and building until it took on a form of its own, physically lifting us up out of the space and over the rooftops of Ferrara. This ambient reimagining contains fragments of the vocal and guitar, as if half-remembered in a dream, while a bed of electronics takes us to lift-off." As broadcast October 7, 2023 with plenty of good tunes and good people in tow.  Tonight we enter part four of our six chapter Busking World Cup spotlight with a couple of wanderers who have happened to touch down here in Gwangju for the 2nd annual event held in our fair City of Light.  First up is a semi-nomadic artist out of far northern Cairns, Australia named Tessa Devine.  A brilliant singer-songwriter, Tessa Devine actually ended up winning the People's Choice Award at the event as the audience's favorite, and she's certainly a favorite in our hearts as well.  In an interview showing both her very free spirit and tasteful selection process, Devine shouted out some of her favorite Aussie compatriots in an hour of excellent music and an at times uproarious interview.  Hour two we highlighted a rather wild trio making their debut at the Busking World Cup called Music In The Jungle.  The trio of Jacelyn, Katie, and DJ 2Shay certainly were one of more original artists on the roster this year, with a repertoire that included live paintings made with each appearance.  Katie and 2Shay literally came straight into the studio with luggage and everything in tow fresh off their flight, and the trio took us through a selection of tunes from their favorite audio compadres in the world along with their roots in Canada and the place they met in Costa Rica.#feelthegravityBusking World Cup 2023 Special #42023.10.07Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 with Tessa Devine (00:00)Tessa Devine – It's YouRob Howe – CarolinaTullara – Better Hold OnTones and I – Fly AwayFelipe Baldomir – YouLT – Act Your Age Part 2 (33:15)Tessa Devine – WildAmber Reid – Side LinedThe Dreggs – You and MeMardi Wilson – SaltyGreta Stanley – It's Cool to Be in LoveKim Churchill – Window to the Sky Part 3 with Music In The Jungle (63:55)Jacelyn – FoolLeh-lo – Patience Zig ZagNya Marquez – 7 ElevenDonavon Lee Carpenter – Born to Love YouMan Crush – Don't Be Trippin'Editus feat Manuel Monestel – Cahuita Is a Beautiful Place Part 4 (96:40)Jacelyn feat Asha – Kaleidoscope GRiZ – Mystik DubClari Sol – Yin YangEddy Ruyter – DaydreamPanArmonia – Oli Gis AnthizeiGwen McCrae feat Ferry Ultra – Let Me Do My Thang (dOP remix)*
