In a special episode that's a treat for horror aficionados, host Alex Greenwood and film critic Lucas Hardwick come together for a SILVER SCREAMS special! Listen in for their takes, reactions, stories, and the usual drivel as they watch (with you) the classic '80s zombie flick RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. Don't you want to experience the pain of death? It's not a bad question, Burt. So get your DVD or streaming service warmed up, pour yourself a Black Cat cocktail, and prepare for some Halloween fun as we watch along together. Episode is PG-13/R. Mature themes and some drinking are involved. When he's not working as a Sasquatch stand-in for sleazy European films, Lucas Hardwick spends time writing film essays and reviews for We Belong Dead and Screem magazines. Lucas also enjoys writing horror shorts and has earned Quarterfinalist status in the Killer Shorts and HorrOrigins screenwriting contests. You can find Lucas' shorts on Coverfly. Alex Greenwood experienced the heart-wrenching unpredictability of the film industry when his debut screenplay project came to an abrupt halt following the producer's untimely death. Now, he flogs his acclaimed John Pilate Mystery Series and badgers friends into reading his award-winning horror stories. Praised for his dialogue, Alex brings a unique voice to mystery, horror, and general fiction. "The Solar Queen Meets the Miracle Plant"Justin Benton joins Jamie Green, also known as the Solar Queen on her podcast, KIckstart Conversations, to share the story of how hemp and CBD oil changed his son's life. Justin kicks off the episode recounting how his son was diagnosed with severe autism. Traditional therapies and nutritional changes were not yielding satisfactory results, which led him to explore holistic and plant-based medicine. Growing up in the Midwest with an understanding of the benefits of natural remedies, Justin decided to try CBD oil for his son. Inspired by the story of Charlotte Figi, a girl who had significant improvements in her epilepsy with CBD, Justin started growing his own hemp and producing raw CBD oil.The breakthrough came when Justin gave his son a tincture of raw CBD oil at a pumpkin patch, leading to a dramatic improvement in his behavior within minutes. This success propelled Justin to found 101cbd.org, an organization dedicated to providing free CBD products to those in need, especially families affected by autism. They also touch on the stigma surrounding CBD and how it differs from marijuana. Justin explains the benefits of CBD for pain relief, anxiety, and overall health, emphasizing that it helps the body find balance and heal itself. He discusses the process of growing hemp, the importance of cold extraction methods to preserve the plant's benefits, and the various products offered by 101 CBD. Our hosts Chris and Amy read the perfectly bite-sized work of queer teen romantic fiction (possibly the best four word combination ever concocted), Twelfth Grade Night! A graphic novel oozing with as much character as it does heart, this story take mighty inspiration from some of Shakespeare's most famous (and fun) works. There's an honest to goodness love triangle, many hijinks, and important messages about acceptance and overcoming grief. You'd be amazed by how much the authors, Molly Horton Booth and Stephanie Kate Strohm, managed to fit into this delectably scrumptious story. The illustrator, Jamie Green, also played an important role in bringing the uniquely fantastical world to life. But, you don't have to take our word for it - pick up the book, give it a read, and then come listen to an episode we had way too much fun recording!Thank you to Kevin MacLeod for the use of our theme song, 'Werq.' Today's episode discusses a timely issue on fully funding IDEA or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Heather Zellers and Jamie Green rejoin us to discuss this very important legislation. IDEA is a law that provides free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities nationwide and ensures special education and related services to those children. The IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education, and related services to almost 8 million children and youth with disabilities. Congress promised 40% of funding when it was approved but has not met that need. In other words, this is 55.5 Billion Dollars to fund IDEA fully. This money would help students with (dis)abilities and potentially free additional funds for innovation in the classroom and support other students. These funds would help educators provide early interventions to ensure all kids have an equal opportunity in education regardless of their condition. This would translate into services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and mental health services. This translates into increased gains in strategic resource allocation, improved performance in the classroom, and giving students opportunities earlier to help them actualize their potential. Fully funding the 40% federal contribution to IDEA will help all students and even teachers. It has Republican and Democratic support from New York to California. Listen to this episode as we discuss the bill's details and how it will benefit local schools in rural and urban areas, including topics of local control. This is a call to action for all our listeners, educators, administrators, and parents. Please get in touch with your senators and members of Congress to support this bill. We have a huge opportunity to make a real difference, and we invite you to join the call. About our Guests. Heather Zellers is the Director of Information and Advocacy for the Rural Schools Association of New York (RSA). Heather also serves as the Chair of the National Rural Education Advocacy Consortium (NREAC), President of the National Rural Education Association (NREA) Foundation, and is a member of the NREA Executive Committee. Dive into the dark underbelly of the City of Fountains, Kansas City, along with a splash from a killer cocktail on the new podcast, "Going to Killing City." Kansas City-based co-hosts Jamie Green and Alex Greenwood explore the most bizarre, unsettling, and truly odd historic murders that have transpired in the heart of the Midwest. “Kansas City is renowned for its rich barbecue tradition, grandiose fountains, and vibrant jazz culture. But beneath the pleasant facade lies a wealth of chilling stories that have silently shaped the city's history,” said Jamie Green, producer and co-host. “With 'Going to Killing City,' we aim to illuminate these oft-overlooked tales, exposing a side of Kansas City that will captivate listeners with elements of surprise and shock.” Recorded from the comfort of their home bars (‘The Green Room' and ‘The Green Shebeen,' respectively), and paired with a killer cocktail recipe in each episode, Green and Greenwood offer a unique approach to the true crime genre. By blending humor with historical analysis, they aspire to not just entertain, but also to broaden listeners' understanding of Kansas City's mysterious past. Each month, the co-hosts alternate roles, with one uncovering an intriguing KC crime story, while the other uses a brief clue to share a cocktail recipe that may—or may not—complement the secret crime story to be told. The first three episodes encompass narratives of gangland murders, a shocking serial killer, and a deadly, bizarre love triangle. "History isn't just about memorizing dates and events," says co-host Greenwood. "It's about grasping people's actions and their consequences. We narrate the stories in a light-hearted way, not delving into every angle of each crime. While some elements might be unfamiliar to those not from Kansas City, we believe our approach makes history interesting.” Green added, “We have set a few ground rules. We do not cover murders that have happened within the past three decades, nor do we discuss any murders involving children.” While recognizing that murder is an unfortunate reality in Kansas City, as it is elsewhere in America, the duo is clear about their intent. “We distinguish between sharing a story with context and sensationalism. We're not glorifying violence or the ensuing grief. Instead, Jamie and I explore the peculiar circumstances of human behavior. Consider this an audio KC Crime Tour,” Greenwood explained. Green is the owner of a full-service public policy consulting firm based in Kansas City. He specializes in economic development analysis, public policy research and analysis, grant writing, sustainability, and communications. He has produced and hosted Trading Fours, a popular music podcast for musicians and fans alike, for three years. Public relations consultant and mystery novel author Greenwood is a longtime podcaster—he produced his first show in 2006, and currently produces two shows, Mysterious Goings On, which focuses on creativity and writing, and PR After Hours, which focuses on business. He also co-hosts on the monthly chat show, Chica and the Man with actress and poet Sonia Iris Lozada.
