D'Arcy Waldegrave: Joe Schmidt's time heading the Wallabies has revealed some key points

The All Sport Breakfast

Joe Schmidt is stepping away from his saviour role at the end of this year's Rugby Championship. The good lord giveth, the good lord taketh away. His decision to leave is of no surprise considering his strong desire to spend more time with his family, which made his initial decision to coach the Wallabies a tad odd. He'd spent a number of years coaching internationally. Had finally given it away to return to New Zealand, only to be lured back into a role he obviously loves and undoubtedly excels in. He's given the Wallabies a tiny bit of room to name his successor, choosing to leave the job after the Bledisloe in Perth as opposed to the end of the Lions series. His time in the role has expressed in action some key points that will leave Aussie rugby feeling A) good about itself and B) terrible about itself. Within 6 years, the Wallabies will have had 5 coaches. Cheika, Rennie, Jones, Schmidt, and whoever gets the new gig. As they say, consistently inconsistent. Their selection process has been a crapshoot, no wonder the team's results have followed suit. The players don't know what's around every corner, the administrators don't even know what a corner is, the fans are know that around every corner is a cul-de-sac. Awful across all metrics. So, the selection process has been a chaotic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey exercise without a tail to hold, or an ass to stick it on. However, there is a resounding positive here, as proven by Schmidt. Despite protestations that Australian rugby lacks the required cattle, after their last Northern Tour, we've found out that even though their stock isn't in ranch-style abundance, they are there. They just need someone with a clue to set them on their away. A man like Joe. Is Leon McDonald the man riding in to save the day? Wouldn't surprise me at all. It also wouldn't surprise me if Aussie Rugby got rid of him before he had a chance to anything at all. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on ‘The KOKO Match Review' the boys are up bright and early nursing sore heads and weary eyes to give you ‘ra ra' roundup like no other. We will fine-tooth comb our way through Bledisloe two, where the All Blacks were pushed to the edge early by a brave and willing Wallabies team in windy Wellington. After getting off to a fast start this week the Wallabies mounted significant pressure, but when push came to shove, the points came a lot easier for the big brutal boys from the land of the long white cloud. The papers and social clips will read that the Wallabies went down two to nil in the Bledisloe Cup, but it is clear to the naked eye that our ‘Gangsters of Gold' are putting in a ‘Schmidt' tonne effort and are progressing nicely. With the TRC on the line it would be reckless of The KOKO Crew not to address the neat little treat in Nelspruit between the Springboks and Pumas. Although the Pumas had a snowflake's chance in hell to hold the TRC title in their sassy South American hands, it was the banging Boks in the end that got up really big for Eben Etzebeth in his record breaking match. The ‘Green Goblins' of gritty rugby proved way too strong at home for the pedestrian Pumas, claiming their much deserved place at the tippy top of The Rugby Championship. So if you are rising slowly this fine morning muttering the words “Sundays are for Swoop” then throw on your coziest crotchless pants and listen to our dulcet tones to get you really hot and heavy. The All Blacks start a test match on Saturday under coach Scott Robertson with someone other than Damian McKenzie at first-five for the first time. Beauden Barrett will instead run the cutter against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium, his first start at No. 10 since 2022, with a former All Black playmaker saying that should remain the case as he doesn't see McKenzie as being at the level of an international first-five. Carlos Spencer made 35 test appearances in black and only five players have scored more points for the All Blacks than him. A player of similar style to McKenzie with a prized ability to unlock defences through innovative plays, he tells Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he sees the 29-year-old as better suited to fullback. “I almost feel a little bit sorry for him to be honest. It's been a tough little road for him, obviously on the back of a team that probably hasn't performed to its potential and unfortunately it's usually the No. 10 that takes most of the stick. “I've always considered Damian as a better fullback than a No.10.”Spencer says McKenzie's Super Rugby form in the position is evident but does not see him as a test-level first-five. “Personally, no. I don't think he is. I think he's great at Super level but when it comes to test matches I just don't think he's got what it takes to be a really assertive No. 10 unfortunately. “I like Damian McKenzie, I think he's a great player but I just find that he's better suited at fullback than 10.”More time and space on the ball that is found when playing with 15 on his back, rather than 10, is what Spencer says makes McKenzie more suited to fullback. “He's got more time to make decisions, there's a bit more space, he enters the line well. I think he can see more from at the back. “That doesn't stop him from jumping into first receiver occasionally from fullback, but I think those are the biggest points. I think he just lacks that direction at test match level where it's really important.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings?   Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe.  According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji.  When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win.   I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory.  But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it.   And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton.   There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL.  All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin
Francesca Rudkin: Schmidt joining the Wallabies is good for all Southern Hemisphere rugby

People – and when I say people, I mean the general public and sports journalists - were quite taken aback with the news this week that Joe Schmidt is the new Wallabies rugby coach.    I don't know why. The Aussie media had him as a contender last November, when the whole Eddie Jones situation imploded.   But I can see why it was surprising – he left Ireland to spend more time with family in New Zealand. As the All Black's attack coach, Schmidt was very happy to remain quietly behind the scenes during their run up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. When it came to replacing Ian Foster, the response was that he wouldn't be applying for any coaching roles that extended beyond the Rugby World Cup.  But the man is only 58 years old. While he thought he'd retired when he returned to New Zealand, clearly he has still has a wealth of experience and success after tenures with Bay of Plenty, Clermont, Leinster, Ireland and more recently with the Blues and the All Blacks. So if the time feels right take on another challenge, why wouldn't he?  And what a challenge he has found!    Schmidt will be good for Australian rugby. He's analytical and intense, he's competitive and tough, and has a reputation for not tolerating players who make errors or don't follow instructions. The fact he has taken a 2-year contract indicates he's keen to take on the young talent in Aussie rugby, and start molding them into a well-disciplined unit with a strong future. There's a good chance he will do exactly that.   And it's a good thing. If Australian rugby is strong it helps make Southern Hemisphere rugby strong, and we all benefit.   When explaining why he applied for the job, Schmidt said- “I'm desperate for the Wallabies to be competitive - I think the global rugby family is desperate for the Wallabies to be where they need to be.”   And then he said something which really hit home: "I'd just love for the Bledisloe to be competitive."     The Wallabies haven't held the Bledisloe Cup since 2002.   While this is a wonderful record for the All Blacks, wouldn't it be fantastic to go into the Bledisloe knowing we were in for a great, competitive, nervous game of rugby.   Schmidt joining the Aussie team is good for all rugby in Australia. No one pays a huge amount of attention to rugby in Australia. When they do get a headline it's often for the wrong reasons and it's easy to see why fans prefer to watch the NRL and Aussie Rules. If you're up against more entertaining games you need to win to get the country behind you.   And as for the former Aussie players who think another Kiwi coach is a bad idea- got a better one?   Rugby Australia also secured two of Schmidt's closest allies. Peter Horne, the new Director of High Performance of Rugby, tasked with looking after all aspects of high performance, including the Wallabies, Wallaroos and Sevens, along with the alignment of Super Rugby's high performance programs and pathways, and David Nucifora, as a High Performance advisor. It appears more than a little thought has gone into getting a power team who can revitalise Australian Rugby.  For Kiwis who take Schmidt's move across the ditch personally – don't. There's no restraint of trade in this business- and too few top jobs and not enough money in the kitty to add restrictions into contracts. Schmidt is only doing what every other international coach does. He's found a project which interests him and where he believes he can add some value. Hopefully we all benefit. This is good news for rugby.   Although I must say, if we didn't have Razor at the helm of the All Blacks I'd be a bit nervous… LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The All Blacks battered the Wallabies on Saturday night, retaining the Bledisloe Cup and the Rugby Championship with a 38-7 win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australian coach Eddie Jones had suggested his side were up for the match in the lead up, with an All Black loss potentially harming New Zealand's economy, and deciding the election. Perhaps Chris Hipkins can sleep easy, for now, after Ian Foster's men eased to victory. Rugby writer Jamie Wall spoke to Guyon Espiner.
