Joe Schmidt is stepping away from his saviour role at the end of this year's Rugby Championship. The good lord giveth, the good lord taketh away. His decision to leave is of no surprise considering his strong desire to spend more time with his family, which made his initial decision to coach the Wallabies a tad odd. He'd spent a number of years coaching internationally. Had finally given it away to return to New Zealand, only to be lured back into a role he obviously loves and undoubtedly excels in. He's given the Wallabies a tiny bit of room to name his successor, choosing to leave the job after the Bledisloe in Perth as opposed to the end of the Lions series. His time in the role has expressed in action some key points that will leave Aussie rugby feeling A) good about itself and B) terrible about itself. Within 6 years, the Wallabies will have had 5 coaches. Cheika, Rennie, Jones, Schmidt, and whoever gets the new gig. As they say, consistently inconsistent. Their selection process has been a crapshoot, no wonder the team's results have followed suit. The players don't know what's around every corner, the administrators don't even know what a corner is, the fans are know that around every corner is a cul-de-sac. Awful across all metrics. So, the selection process has been a chaotic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey exercise without a tail to hold, or an ass to stick it on. However, there is a resounding positive here, as proven by Schmidt. Despite protestations that Australian rugby lacks the required cattle, after their last Northern Tour, we've found out that even though their stock isn't in ranch-style abundance, they are there. They just need someone with a clue to set them on their away. A man like Joe. Is Leon McDonald the man riding in to save the day? Wouldn't surprise me at all. It also wouldn't surprise me if Aussie Rugby got rid of him before he had a chance to anything at all. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on ‘The KOKO Match Review' the boys are up bright and early nursing sore heads and weary eyes to give you ‘ra ra' roundup like no other. We will fine-tooth comb our way through Bledisloe two, where the All Blacks were pushed to the edge early by a brave and willing Wallabies team in windy Wellington. After getting off to a fast start this week the Wallabies mounted significant pressure, but when push came to shove, the points came a lot easier for the big brutal boys from the land of the long white cloud. The papers and social clips will read that the Wallabies went down two to nil in the Bledisloe Cup, but it is clear to the naked eye that our ‘Gangsters of Gold' are putting in a ‘Schmidt' tonne effort and are progressing nicely. With the TRC on the line it would be reckless of The KOKO Crew not to address the neat little treat in Nelspruit between the Springboks and Pumas. Although the Pumas had a snowflake's chance in hell to hold the TRC title in their sassy South American hands, it was the banging Boks in the end that got up really big for Eben Etzebeth in his record breaking match. The ‘Green Goblins' of gritty rugby proved way too strong at home for the pedestrian Pumas, claiming their much deserved place at the tippy top of The Rugby Championship. So if you are rising slowly this fine morning muttering the words “Sundays are for Swoop” then throw on your coziest crotchless pants and listen to our dulcet tones to get you really hot and heavy. The All Blacks start a test match on Saturday under coach Scott Robertson with someone other than Damian McKenzie at first-five for the first time. Beauden Barrett will instead run the cutter against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium, his first start at No. 10 since 2022, with a former All Black playmaker saying that should remain the case as he doesn't see McKenzie as being at the level of an international first-five. Carlos Spencer made 35 test appearances in black and only five players have scored more points for the All Blacks than him. A player of similar style to McKenzie with a prized ability to unlock defences through innovative plays, he tells Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he sees the 29-year-old as better suited to fullback. “I almost feel a little bit sorry for him to be honest. It's been a tough little road for him, obviously on the back of a team that probably hasn't performed to its potential and unfortunately it's usually the No. 10 that takes most of the stick. “I've always considered Damian as a better fullback than a No.10.”Spencer says McKenzie's Super Rugby form in the position is evident but does not see him as a test-level first-five. “Personally, no. I don't think he is. I think he's great at Super level but when it comes to test matches I just don't think he's got what it takes to be a really assertive No. 10 unfortunately. “I like Damian McKenzie, I think he's a great player but I just find that he's better suited at fullback than 10.”More time and space on the ball that is found when playing with 15 on his back, rather than 10, is what Spencer says makes McKenzie more suited to fullback. “He's got more time to make decisions, there's a bit more space, he enters the line well. I think he can see more from at the back. “That doesn't stop him from jumping into first receiver occasionally from fullback, but I think those are the biggest points. I think he just lacks that direction at test match level where it's really important.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One former All Blacks captain claims Scott Robertson will want to try out new combinations in future matches. The side set to play against the Wallabies in Wellington has been revealed - with Beauden Barrett taking on the No 10 jersey, Anton Lienert-Brown replacing Jordie Barrett and TJ Perenara starting his final match in the No 9 jersey. Sir Wayne 'Buck' Shelford says Damian McKenzie - who got dropped down to the bench - hasn't lost his chance just yet. "Take test match rugby - you just don't have as much time. This week on The KOKO Show we take a long hard look at round five of The Rugby Championship, a weekend that saw the giddy guys of gold push the All Blacks to the edge in Bledisloe one, as well as the World Champion blazing Boks getting pantsed by the prideful Pumas in a one point thriller. These games are broken down and picked apart by the KOKO Crew as if they were vultures on a sun baked Kudu carcass lying in the middle of the Serengeti. To help us through this delectable feast of footy filled fabulousness, we have called in the big guns. In this week's episode Beaver takes across the ditch to see what the classy Kiwis are saying about their side's sub-par performance over the weekend, whilst also lifting the lid on what appears to be the start of a footy fuelled national crisis in New Zealand. With all this sporting sensationalism hooked straight to our veins, the boys felt it was pertinent to spend a little time to show MYER our major sponsor some love with a perfectly fierce, flashy and spectacularly ‘sigma' mixed bag ‘Match Fit. Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings? Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe. According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji. When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win. I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory. But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it. And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton. There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL. All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The best thing that could happen in the first Bledisloe Cup fixture is a loss for the All Blacks. Or a win for the Wallabies, the same, but different. The ABs could choke it up in the last 20, ergo lose, or the Wallabies could pull a massive hat rabbit and beat up their opposition, therefore win. The best thing meaning the best way to pump some blood through the veins of the age-old encounter. It would be a marketing dream. It would bring a much-needed story line. It would bring fear, jeopardy, self-doubt and all those other triggering emotions. It would sell the game, it would provide story threads desperately needed for what was once a rugby highlight. The fact that the Bledisloe Cup is all the All Blacks have left in their trophy cabinet is a good way to generate fascination, but that will only gain real traction if this evening's game goes the way of the Ockers. Only then will we get the simultaneous energy of potential and desperation. Maybe then we'd get a skerrick of emotion from both teams. It's a shame to wish ill upon the national side just to elicit genuine emotion and vibrant narratives, but frankly, it's come to that. The best we've had this week is 2 captains, one saying he'd hate to be the captain responsible for losing the Cup and the other saying the game represents a great opportunity. Really? Wow, I'd never have guessed. Hold the phone, stop the press. Sensational. What else have you got? A game of two halves? Full credit to the opposition? Learnings? Moving forward? Process? Bring on a loss, let's generate some bloody emotion! But it's the All Blacks. It's rugby. It's probably asking too much. I'll get my coat. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
