This podcast episode was originally recorded for "Mormon Sex Info" Podcast. It's now being refurbished for your enjoyment here at the "Healing Sols Podcast." For more from Natasha Helfer, LCMFT, CST, CSTS, please visit https://www.natashahelfer.com. Natasha Helfer Parker interviews Dr. David Ley, author of The Myth of Sex Addiction, regarding the problems with the sex addiction treatment model and the conversations we should be having instead. He states that not only is this type of modality erroneous, but dangerous. They cover such issues as: How do shifting attitudes about sexuality force us to renegotiate how we see and define healthy sexuality? Why is sexual diversity easily pathologized? Why is it that there is not a single published study that sex addiction treatment makes a difference and yet treatment centers are growing in number at an alarming rate? Why are we abandoning people within a moral or social crisis, by focusing on things like a supposed pornography public health crisis? Are we aware that gay and bi men are three times as likely to be called “sex addicts?” Are we aware that the American Psychiatric Association has rejected the language of “sex addiction” for 40 years? Are we talking about the importance of sex education and regular dialogue? How can we help people explore morality in their sexuality as adults? How do we incorporate religious beliefs in ways that allow for normative sexuality? Dr. David Ley is a clinical psychologist in practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Ole Miss, and his Master's and Doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Ley is the Executive Director of New Mexico Solutions, a large outpatient mental health and substance abuse program in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Ley has been treating sexuality issues throughout his career. He first began treating perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse, but expanded his approach to include the fostering and promotion of healthy sexuality, and awareness of the wide range of normative sexual behaviors. Insatiable Wives: Women Who Stray and the Men Who Love Them is his first book and won a Silver Medal in the Foreword Magazine Book of the Year contest for 2009. Dr. Ley wrote Insatiable Wives following two years of interviews with couples around the country. His controversial second book, The Myth of Sex Addiction was released in March 2012. Resources mentioned during the podcast: Defining “Normophilic” and “Paraphilic” Sexual Fantasies in a Population-Based Sample: On the Importance of Considering Subgroups by Christian Joyal Jason Winters (2010) published three studies on sex addiction, demonstrating that alleged sex addicts have as much (or as little) sexual self-control as anyone else, and that the identity of sex addict is predicated by a religious upbringing. Grubbs, Hook, Griffin and Davis (2015) published a review of the paucity of outcome data on sex addiction treatment in Current Addiction Reports. Inside the Episode with Mitch Hampton: “I was first introduced to Jaimee Wriston Colbert by her daughter Mailie Colbert, who told me I should read her mother's books. I read Climbing The God Tree, and later Shark Girls, and more recently, Vanishing Acts with the greatest pleasure. Colbert's work is exciting in its formal inventiveness: it blurs the line between short stories and the novel for one, magical thing, moreover it is fiction rooted in the real lives of ordinary humanity, sometimes, and in some instances people who are unfortunately forgotten or overlooked in a lot of books and stories. The characters in Colbert's fiction really are like the people you could know in life except that she gives you more than a glimpse into their inner lives such that would be ordinarily unavailable to you in life. The people in Colbert's fiction have extraordinary dignity and integrity, even in some of the hardest social situations, and the struggles of the characters come alive in ways that make you look at human social life in a thoroughly novel way. In the proverbial phrase, you grow to care about them as you read. In having Colbert on the show, the artistic medium being celebrated is what used to be called the art of prose, and it is a medium in which she undoubtedly excels.” Jaimee’s Biography: Jaimee Wriston Colbert is the author of six books of fiction: Vanishing Acts, winner of a 2018 Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, and finalist for the 2018 American Fiction Prize, 2018 Foreword Indies Book of the Year, the National Indie Excellence Award in Literary Fiction, and the 2019 International Book Award in Literary Fiction; Wild Things, winner of the CNY 2017 Book Award in Fiction and the 2018 International Book Award in Fiction-Short Stories; Shark Girls, finalist for the USA Book News Best Books of 2010 and ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year; Dream Lives of Butterflies, winner of the IPPY Gold Medal/First Place Award for story collections; Climbing the God Tree, winner of the Willa Cather Fiction Prize; and Sex, Salvation, and the Automobile, winner of the Zephyr Prize. Her work has appeared in numerous journals, including The Gettysburg Review, New Letters, Tampa Review, and Prairie Schooner, and broadcast on “Selected Shorts.” She was awarded the 2012 Ian MacMillan Fiction Prize for “Things Blow Up,” a story in Wild Things. Other stories won the Jane’s Stories Award and the Isotope Editor’s Fiction Prize. Dr Bisbey called in sick, so we republished this   Hi everyone! Welcome to the A to Z of Sex. I'm Dr Lori Beth and I am your host.  We are working our way through the erotic alphabet one letter at a time.  Just a reminder this podcast deals with adult content, so if you don't have total privacy, you might want to put on your headphones. Today the letter is P and P is for Porn.  Porn is a divisive topic these days. There has been a lot of panic around what young people are accessing on the internet and whether they are getting most of their sex education from porn. There has also been a lot of controversy around the idea of sex and porn ‘addictions'. In some areas pornography has been demonised to the point that there is significant censorship legislation to control what adults can see and possess with very stiff penalties. Dr. David Ley is a clinical psychologist in practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Ole Miss, and his Master's and Doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Ley is licensed in New Mexico and North Carolina, and has provided clinical and consultative services in numerous other states. He is the Executive Director of New Mexico Solutions, a large outpatient mental health and substance abuse program in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Ley has been treating sexuality issues throughout his career. He first began treating perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse, but expanded his approach to include the fostering and promotion of healthy sexuality, and awareness of the wide range of normative sexual behaviors. Insatiable Wives is his first book and won a Silver Medal in the Foreword Magazine Book of the Year contest for 2009. Dr. Ley wrote Insatiable Wives following two years of interviews with couples around the country. His controversial second book, The Myth of Sex Addiction was released in March 2012, challenging the concept of sexual addiction and exploring a different model of male sexuality. The Myth of Sex Addiction triggered a firestorm of debate, allowing people to finally challenge the media hype of this pseudo-disorder. His new book Ethical Porn for Dicks, A Man's Guide to Responsible Viewing Pleasure was released to significant expectation and positive reviews in November 2016.) We started our conversation by speaking about whether there is really such a thing as sex and porn addiction. Dr Ley spoke about the damage that labelling problems around sex and pornography as addiction as it adds to shaming the person.  He was clear that when pornography is a problem it is usually a symptom rather than the cause. He spoke of research demonstrating that men who are stressed and depressed are more likely to use pornography long term and that they appear to be using the pornography as a means of managing negative emotions. Women tend to get more support when expressing negative emotions and are not shamed because they have negative emotions so this is seen less in women. Dr Ley spoke about research demonstrating that long term couples who watch pornography together have better sexual relationships, couples who watch pornography separately but tell each other about it have better relationships and women who watch pornography have better relationships.  The only group where pornography is seen to be a problem is when men watch pornography and don't tell their partners about it and their partners don't watch and don't like pornography. Dr Ley emphasised sexual integrity in a person and his relationships.  He spoke of the need for education around sexuality so that people could learn to integrate their needs and desires and then education in communication so that they could learn to communicate with their partners about sexuality and desire.  We spoke of the lack of education helping young people to learn to talk about sex with anyone, let alone with partners and the fact that there so many young people are not being taught...
