Carolyn is an emotional intelligence and leadership development expert who discusses her belief that everyone needs an education in how to communicate and resolve conflict when emotional, especially those in leadership roles.   Carolyn relates personal examples of how she learned to control her emotions to find the strength to communicate clearly and get her job done under stress. She explains how having emotions and being emotional is different, why emotions and feelings are not bad experiences if we can manage our responses to them, and how to identify our triggers so we can be on top of them. Dr. Laura explores how Carolyn's book offers an emotional intelligence learning process for readers to take part in and what those key steps look like. Emotional intelligence is not taught in schools but it's a vital skill for everyone to develop in life, something that will assist not only leaders but anyone in managing healthy communication and relationships.“... I think that the bottom line is our emotions are incredibly powerful. I think we overvalue positive emotions and undervalue negative emotions, but you and I both know they both provide gifts. Every emotion tells you something.”  Carolyn SternAbout Carolyn Stern: Carolyn Stern is the President and CEO of EI Experience—an executive leadership development and emotional intelligence training firm. But she's controlled by a Seattle-based crime family that is spreading its tentacles across the Bellingham Bay, a perfect location for trafficking drugs and people across the Pacific Ocean. The book opens with the murder of a priest, who turns out to be the brother of the retreat's proprietor, and a gourmet cook. The lovely Pine and Quill offers several cabins, one for each writer, and enticing-sounding gourmet meals. We'll also have native American stories, Australian politics, eloquence in public speech, and plenty of poetry. I hope you'll come along for the whole season.Today, we're discussing Coffin Honey. Todd Davis's seventh book of poems and his sixth with MSU Press. In the book, Davis explores the many forms of violence we do to each other and to the other living beings with whom we share this planet. Davis dramatizes racism, climate collapse, and pandemic, as well as the very real threat of extinction in intimate portraits of Rust-Belt Appalachia: a young victim of sexually assault struggles with dreams of revenge and the possible solace that nature might provide; a girl whose boyfriend has enlisted in the military faces pregnancy alone; and a bear named Ursus navigates the fecundity of the forest after his own mother's death, literally crashing into the encroaching human world. The poems in Coffin Honey illuminates beauty and suffering, the harrowing precipice we find ourselves walking along here in the twenty-first century. As in his previous prize-winning books, Davis names the world with love and care, demonstrating what one reviewer describes as his knowledge of “Latin names, common names, habitats, and habits . . . steeped in the exactness of the earth and the science that unfolds in wildness.”TODD DAVIS is the author of seven full-length collections of poetry as well as a limited-edition chapbook, Household of Water, Moon, & Snow. His writing has won the Midwest Book Award, the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize, the Chautauqua Editors Prize, the Bloomsburg University Book Prize, and the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Silver and Bronze Awards.Todd Davis's Coffin Honey along with his other poetry collections are available at msupress.org and other fine booksellers. Fiction. Women's Studies. Environmental Studies. Winner of the Bronze 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards for Science Fiction. Finalist for the 2021 International Book Awards for Science Fiction. Centuries from now, in a post-climate change dying boreal forest of what used to be northern Canada, Kyo, a young acolyte called to service in the Exodus, discovers a diary that may provide her with the answers to her yearning for Earth's past--to the Age of Water, when the "Water Twins" destroyed humanity in hatred--events that have plagued her nightly in dreams. Looking for answers to this holocaust--and disturbed by her macabre longing for connection to the Water Twins--Kyo is led to the diary of a limnologist from the time just prior to the destruction. This gritty memoir describes a near-future Toronto in the grips of severe water scarcity during a time when China owns the USA and the USA owns Canada. The diary spans a twenty-year period in the mid-twenty-first century of 33-year-old Lynna, a single mother who works in Toronto for CanadaCorp, an international utility that controls everything about water, and who witnesses disturbing events that she doesn't realize will soon lead to humanity's demise. A DIARY IN THE AGE OF WATER follows the climate-induced journey of Earth and humanity through four generations of women, each with a unique relationship to water. The novel explores identify and our concept of what is "normal"--as a nation and an individual--in a world that is rapidly and incomprehensibly changing.Link to the book on AmazonLink to the book on Barnes and Noblebooks, audiobooks, author reading, reading, book, podcast, fiction, science fiction, scifi, women's, dystopian

Today I talked to Rebecca D’Harlingue about her novel The Lines Between Us (She Writes Press, 2020). A widow in 17th century Spain discovers that her beloved niece, Juliana, has suddenly disappeared. Juliana records her forced journey in the diary she received from Tia Ana. Years later, when she feels herself to be nearing the end of her life, she writes to Ana, explains why she fled, and tells her that she is a nun in the new world. Ana’s response provokes Juliana into sharing her life story and demanding that Mercedes, a nun who hasn’t yet taken her vows, leave the convent. The years pass, and Mercedes, near the end of her own life, passes Juliana’s packet to her granddaughter with a demand that the mothers among her descendants keep the secret of this packet from their own daughters, only passing it to one granddaughter in each generation. Three hundred years later and we’re in 20th century America, when a college Spanish professor finds the packet while cleaning out her mother’s closet after her mother’s untimely death. She wonders if the secret is still worth keeping. Rebecca D’Harlingue was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and never got used to the humidity. Growing up, her mother read every spare moment, and her father often just had to read out loud some new passage from a book he was immersed in. Her high school English teacher inspired her to read on a deeper level, with some unexpected choices like Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles, and T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, which fed into D’Harlingue’s enchantment with all things Arthurian. She also loves languages, having studied Spanish, German, Russian, Italian, and even taking an ill-fated stab at Mandarin. She had completed all but her dissertation for a PhD in Spanish language and literature when she had her first child, felt reality strike, and went back to school to get an MBA in health services administration. After working in that field for a number of years, she quit her job to start her novel, but abandoned it, only to pick it up twenty years later, after having taught English as a Second Language to adults for many years. She lives in Oakland, California, with her husband, Arthur. D’Harlingue’s debut novel, The Lines Between Us, won in New Fiction in the 2021 Independent Press Awards, and was a finalist in Best New Fiction in both the 2020 International Book Awards and the 2020 Best Book Awards. It was also a finalist in the 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in Historical Fiction. Inside the Episode with Mitch Hampton: “I was first introduced to Jaimee Wriston Colbert by her daughter Mailie Colbert, who told me I should read her mother's books. I read Climbing The God Tree, and later Shark Girls, and more recently, Vanishing Acts with the greatest pleasure. Colbert's work is exciting in its formal inventiveness: it blurs the line between short stories and the novel for one, magical thing, moreover it is fiction rooted in the real lives of ordinary humanity, sometimes, and in some instances people who are unfortunately forgotten or overlooked in a lot of books and stories. The characters in Colbert's fiction really are like the people you could know in life except that she gives you more than a glimpse into their inner lives such that would be ordinarily unavailable to you in life. The people in Colbert's fiction have extraordinary dignity and integrity, even in some of the hardest social situations, and the struggles of the characters come alive in ways that make you look at human social life in a thoroughly novel way. In the proverbial phrase, you grow to care about them as you read. In having Colbert on the show, the artistic medium being celebrated is what used to be called the art of prose, and it is a medium in which she undoubtedly excels.” Jaimee’s Biography: Jaimee Wriston Colbert is the author of six books of fiction: Vanishing Acts, winner of a 2018 Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, and finalist for the 2018 American Fiction Prize, 2018 Foreword Indies Book of the Year, the National Indie Excellence Award in Literary Fiction, and the 2019 International Book Award in Literary Fiction; Wild Things, winner of the CNY 2017 Book Award in Fiction and the 2018 International Book Award in Fiction-Short Stories; Shark Girls, finalist for the USA Book News Best Books of 2010 and ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year; Dream Lives of Butterflies, winner of the IPPY Gold Medal/First Place Award for story collections; Climbing the God Tree, winner of the Willa Cather Fiction Prize; and Sex, Salvation, and the Automobile, winner of the Zephyr Prize. Her work has appeared in numerous journals, including The Gettysburg Review, New Letters, Tampa Review, and Prairie Schooner, and broadcast on “Selected Shorts.” She was awarded the 2012 Ian MacMillan Fiction Prize for “Things Blow Up,” a story in Wild Things. Other stories won the Jane’s Stories Award and the Isotope Editor’s Fiction Prize.
