Attachment styles are our emotional blueprint, formed in our childhood, for the way we give and receive love, and for our ability to feel safe and emotionally close to others. There are four attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized. Each of these attachment styles is very clearly explained by Dr. Marnee Firestone, a licensed psychologist in Boca Raton, Florida.1. Secure Attachment--this is the most healthy and balanced attachment style. The person is emotionally available for intimacy, as well as independence, without feeling fearful or guilty. They tend to be calm and well balanced. A person with secure attachment most likely received consistent love, validation and nurturing as a child.2. Anxious attachment--someone with this attachment style has a deep fear of abandonment. They seek constant love and reassurance. They can be overly smothering. They panic easily and they feel overly responsible for everyone and everything. They feel a personal sense of failure if their child is struggling, and tend to micromanage their children. A person with anxious attachment style was most likely given inconsistent love and care. Their emotional needs were sometimes tended to, and other times rejected or dismissed.3.Avoidant attachment--someone with avoidant attachment seeks to escape conflicts or arguments in the relationship. They are scared to show emotion or affection because they are scared of being rejected or neglected. They tend to withdraw from both intimacy and arguments for fear of not being accepted by their spouse. A person with avoidant attachment most likely did not have their emotional needs met. 4. Disorganized attachment--someone with disorganized attachment has a push/pull dynamic. They intensely crave closeness, but once someone gets close, they immediately push them away because real intimacy is scary for them. They are highly emotional, have a heightened fear of abandonment, and they are reactive. They have difficulty self-soothing, and they tend to attract chaos in relationships. Disorganized attachment develops as the result of trauma in childhood.Dr. Marnee explains how each of these attachment styles shows up in marriage and parenting. You can change your attachment style by becoming aware of what your attachment style is, and working to emotionally regulate yourself so that you can think clearly and respond appropriately to the people and situations in your life.If you would like Dr. Marnee's free e-book on 4 Tips To Reduce Anxiety in Your Teen, please email me at: atrebbetzins@gmail.com For families interested in Dr. Marnee's program, it is called Break the Anxiety Cycle. https://breakanxietycycle.com/ Dr. Marnee Firestone & Tamar Oppenheimer, LCSW, help parents of anxious teens by teaching them effective and practical strategies that are proven to support teens in building confidence, empowering them to pursue their goals, and ultimately bringing a sense of calm to stressed households. As we approach summer, many parents of anxious teens are searching for ways to reset and prepare their families for a better school year ahead. Break the Anxiety Cycle is a structured, parent-based program created to help families disrupt the patterns that unintentionally reinforce anxiety. Rather than placing the full burden on the teen, this program empowers parents with tools to create real change at home—reducing reactivity, rebuilding connection, and promoting resilience.Vera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach. As a teen leadership coach and a parent of two teenage boys, I've seen firsthand the struggles teens face—and the frustrations parents feel trying to connect with them. From privacy concerns (like knocking before entering their rooms) to trust issues surrounding phones and social media, and even more serious challenges like vaping, the underlying issue always seems to come back to one question: How are we engaging with our teens? I often hear parents say, “I get it—we had no training for this technology. We're learning as we go, and we're probably getting it wrong.” And that's okay. What matters most is that we start listening—really listening—to our teens. When Was the Last Time You Had a Real Conversation with Your Teen? Not just the usual “How was your day?” followed by a one-word response. I mean a genuine, open-ended conversation where they felt heard and understood. Many teens don't feel comfortable talking to their parents because they're afraid of how we'll react. My 17-year-old shared that a lot of his friends feel trapped in vaping addictions but won't talk to their parents out of fear. Instead of seeking help, they silently accept the health risks because they don't believe their parents will support them—only punish them. When my own son struggled with vaping, he told me he initially did it to fit in and to ease his anxiety. That terrified me. How could something so harmful be seen as a solution? Later, he admitted it was actually making things worse, but at the time, he knew telling me it helped with anxiety would make me listen. And it did. Trusting Your Teen—Not to Be Perfect, But to Make Mistakes Every child needs something different from their parents. One of my sons values privacy; the other benefited from having his door removed when he was struggling. It wasn't about punishment—it was about connection and accountability. We have to trust our teens—not to always make the right choices, but to come to us when they don't. When my kids get in trouble at school, I don't double down with additional punishments at home. I remember being grounded as a teen—it didn't stop me from making mistakes, but it did teach me to hide them better. Instead of reacting based on fear or our own reputations, we need to help our teens navigate their mistakes and learn from them. How Do You Want Me to Help You an Open Conversation? Not every issue is life-threatening. Some are as small as not knocking before entering their room. Others, like phone usage and social media, are bigger. But in all cases, the key is to ask, listen, and engage. Start by asking: How do you want me to help you figure this out? How do you want me to listen to you? How am I showing up for you? As parents, we make the final decisions, but giving our teens a voice in the conversation makes all the difference. If we create a space where they feel safe to talk—where honesty is met with understanding instead of just consequences—they'll be more likely to come to us when it matters. I have found the biggest way to bring your teen home to talk to you is by being honest about your own mistakes. Show them that learning, growing, and making better choices is a lifelong process.

This past weekend in General Conference, I heard the parable of the ten virgins referenced FIVE times! It caught my attention, and has reminded me that NOW is the time to make sure my spiritual lamp is ready, filled with the oil of conversion. But also... I realized that I am no longer a young virgin. HAHA! What would this parable be like if it were about 10 matrons, or mothers in Israel? Do I have a responsibility for more lamps than my own? That's what I'm talking about in this episode. A few months ago, I had my friend and colleague Cathy Adams on the show to talk about her book Restoring Our Girls and raising daughters to be emotionally healthy in a complicated world. I knew then that I wanted to have a similar conversation for a future episode, but this time, focusing on boys, specifically about why many teen boys are struggling right now and what we, as parents, can do to support them. I also knew exactly who I wanted to bring on the show to talk about this — Dr. John Duffy. Through his private practice, bestselling books, and media appearances on CNN, NPR, and the Today Show, John has helped thousands of parents navigate the complex world of raising teens in today's world. And he's really got a pulse on the complex inner lives of today's teen boys. In this conversation, we talk about the unique mental health challenges boys are facing today, from increased isolation and anxiety to the messages they are getting from society that are leading to self-doubt and emotional struggles. We also discussed how the pandemic intensified these issues and why paying attention to the media they are consuming is key to connecting with them. John also shared how neurodivergent boys may experience these challenges differently and shared practical strategies for fostering emotional resilience and self-worth. About my guest Dr. John Duffy is a Chicago-based clinical psychologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker and national media expert. He has been in private practice for 25 years, specializing in work with adolescents, young adults and their parents. Dr. Duffy has written three best-selling books intended to provide parents with the tools to help their teens and young adults thrive in this persistent age of anxiety. For more than a decade, Dr. Duffy has also spoken to thousands of parents internationally through PTA's, Fortune 500 corporate programs, and other parenting networks. Dr. Duffy has written and contributed to articles for CNN, the Washington Post, The New York Times, Your Teen, Time and countless other media outlets. On television, he has been a regular contributing expert on NewsNation and Steve Harvey, and has shared his expertise through frequent appearances on CNN, the Today show, the Morning Blend, and hundreds of appearances on local and regional outlets. On radio, Dr. Duffy is a regularly appearing expert on WGN, WLS and NPR.He shares his current articles on his Substack titled On Parenting and Life. Things you'll learn Why boys are facing a growing mental health crisis, with increasing isolation, lack of hope, and behavioral challenges How the pandemic intensified boys' disconnection, highlighting a significant gender divide in mental health How societal narratives around masculinity contribute to self-loathing and emotional struggles in boys How parents can foster connection by engaging with their sons' interests and understanding their media influences Why looking beyond surface behaviors helps parents support boys' emotional well-being and sense of identity Resources Dr. John Duffy's website Rescuing Our Sons: 8 Solutions to Our Crisis of Disaffected Teen Boys by Dr. John Duffy Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety: A Complete Guide to Your Child's Stressed, Depressed, Expanded, Amazing Adolescence by Dr. John Duffy The Available Parent: Expert Advice for Raising Successful Teens and Tweens by Dr. John Duffy Dr. John Duffy on Facebook Dr. John Duffy on Instagram Dr. John Duffy's Substack, On Parenting & Life Parenting the New Teen with Dr. John Duffy (Tilt Parenting Podcast) Learn more about your ad choices. Today's episode is with Dr Jo-Ann Finkelstein, author of the hot new release "Sexism and Sensibility. Dr. Finkelstein's work focuses on understanding and dismantling sexism for parents trying to raise confident and powerful girls in a culture that often demeans them. The world is full of mixed messages for girls: Stand up for yourself but do it softly. Be independent but not single. Love your body, just make sure it's waxed, bleached, and thin. And then there are the more overt hostilities: being talked over, paid less, touched without permission, and having politicians debate their right to bodily autonomy. Many parents find it simpler to affirm girls' strength than to address these distressing experiences directly. But with girls' skyrocketing rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide, parenting them in this culture presents an urgent challenge: How do we teach girls to recognize and cope with these realities without crushing their optimism and belief that they can incite change? Jo-Ann Finkelstein, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who was educated at Harvard University and Northwestern University and now maintains a private clinical practice.
