Find the Light was born from a single Facebook status I made calling attention to the alarming number of students and alumni of the Fort Zumwalt School District that have taken their life or passed away from overdose. That status blossomed into a Facebook group that by that weekend had 1,000 members, and now sits comfortably above 3,600. We as a Foundation are dedicated to advocating on behalf of students and teachers for better mental health resources and programs inside of schools, as well as doing whatever we can to fight the growing trend of suicide and overdose in teens and young adults, specifically in schools. We hope to institute programs to foster mental health reform in schools, and change the national conversation on mental illness and drug addiction. Fort Zumwalt School District is a trauma-informed school district. In this episode of FORTiTUDE, Dr. Jerry Cox, a consulting psychologist with FZSD for 27 years, and Dr. Dede McCullough, Executive Director for Behavioral Support Services, explan how this initiative came to be, and how the district meets the needs of students and staff through this process. Creating trauma-informed schools helps our staff and our community understand the prevalance of trauma in our children, the impact that it has on the development of the brain and on a child’s availability to learn. “It’s best practices,” Dr. Cox says. “It’s what we do to help all kids learn better, and all teachers teach better and all parents to feel more connected to the school community.”
