Film print emulation (FPE for short) is an often discussed, but often confusing topic of discussion for DPs, colorists, and others working in postproduction. In this episode of The Offset Podcast, Robbie & Joey discuss what film print emulation can mean these days and how there are things to like about pursuing a filmic look, things to avoid, and how different people mean different things when discussing FPE.

In the midst of horrible wildfire season around the globe, I have reached out to Prof. Albert Simeoni from Worcester Polytechnic Institute for some hands-on commentary on what is happening around, and why fires all over the globe are constantly on the front pages of mainstream media. I am not sure if I was ready for all the answers received (especially how media are biased to fires in certain parts of the world and pretty silent about others)... But they certainly are great food for thought in considering the current situation and where it may be heading. In the episode, we have discussed what promotes disastrous wildfires, how one can estimate their damage, and how vanity metrics like the historical return period for fire may not be good enough for future preparedness. Changing climate, human expansion, popular "close to the wilderness" lifestyle, industrialization and abandonment of traditional agriculture - all are somewhat responsible for the "new normal". Among the disappointing summary of current events, we have also found a bright light with Fire Protection Engineers being the missing link in the wildfire-urban interface and protecting homes and communities from fire disasters. And for this reason, this episode is well worth a listen for any FPE - you are more important than you think!

Who is a Fire Safety Engineer? And when do you become one? How do you know the person on the other side of the table at the project meeting has the necessary competencies to judge fire safety solutions of a building you design? That is a problem with (a) the definition of the profession and (b) the definition of the core competencies related to the profession. And both of these issues are close to the heart of my guest, Jimmy Jönsson, Director at JVVA in Spain and a member of SFPE Board of Directors. Jimmy has led an SFPE "Core Competencies" task group which created a reference document - Recommended Minimum Technical Core Competencies for the Practice of Fire Protection Engineering. In our talk, we dive deep into the competencies of fire engineers, and to what particular tasks these competencies are required. You will learn where one can obtain the broad view over a fire science, and why Jimmy would rather hire someone with wide but shallow knowledge, over a specialist without a fire engineering background. If you are looking for more resources, SFPE has some goodies for you:almost every good FPE university has now an SFPE Student Chapter, and you can find the list of all of such chapters herePathways to a career in FPEHigher education in FPE

After being introduced to big bore airgun hunting by a friend, Chad's interest in airguns and power modifications grew exponentially. It was only a short time before it became a full time job operating Lethal Air Airgun Shop. Lethal Air was able to produce super-powered big bores capable of energy outputs never-before-seen in the airgun industry and they are not stopping anytime soon. As of the latest, they have a 50 caliber airgun putting out over 1,200 FPE (foot pounds of energy)! Just for some perspective we can take a one-hundred and fifty grain .308 hunting round traveling at almost three-thousand feet per second. This is far above super-sonic speeds with pressures upwards of sixty-thousand PSI occurring in the barrel of that gun. We are able to produce almost half of that energy with working pressures of only 4,500 PSI compared to the 60,000. With this type of technology it has opened the door even further for ethical big game hunting with airguns. Chad hosts camps each year now like the "Maine Bear Camp" where food, lodging and the animal are all in one inclusive package for the big bore airgun hunters. Be sure to follow along with lethal air with the links below. Bill opens the podcast talking about a terrifying fire that happened across the hallway in his mother-in-law's condo high-rise building, and about the damage caused by smoke and water. The gang discusses the possibility of an FPE Stab-Lok panel causing the fire, and Reuben goes on to discuss the disproportionate number of condo buildings with FPE panels when compared to single-family homes. The conversation then turns to a 3-alarm house fire that happened during a Structure Tech home inspection back in 2019, where things turned very serious very quickly. Because of legal and insurance concerns, this is the first time the gang has mentioned this fire, but it's quite a story to share.

In today’s episode we have one of our favorite recurring guests, Brooklyn Zelenka, joining us once again! Brooklyn has been on the show in both the first and second seasons to speak about Elixir and functional programming. In those conversations, it came up that this topic is far from exhausted, and since Season 3's theme is working with Elixir, we thought it would be great to have Brooklyn on for a third time. Today, Brooklyn does not speak to Elixir specifically though, but on functional programming more broadly. Fission, her company which is working on developing next-generation hostless apps, actually uses Haskel, but Brooklyn has a ton of experience across the board. She gives us some great insights into what makes the functional versus OOP paradigm great and helps us to understand some of the inner workings of both worlds, talking about abstraction, application, data orientation, and more. Interestingly, Brooklyn does employ some imperative programming in her company through the use of Typescript, but uses a functional style to get around the context switch. We spend some time toward the end of the show digging deeper into macros, and Brooklyn helps to revise understandings of them as code which writes more code as well as clarifies the term 'homoiconic' as it relates to ASTs. Brooklyn covers a whole lot more today so hop on for a deep dive into functional programming with today's great guest. Key Points From This Episode: • Why Brooklyn uses FPE: it can be reused and reasoned about. • Two things that functions provide: abstraction and application. • Data orientation and hiding information: imperative vs functional paradigms. • Understanding imperative programming: it’s less structured and hard to reason about. • Challenges experienced imperative programmers face with functional programming. • Differences between Elixir, Erlang, Haskel, Elm, and Clojure. • Using Clojure: tradeoffs, distinctions, tooling, flexibility, and compatibility with Java. • The language Brooklyn could use if only one existed: Racket. • Bridging functional and imperative paradigms through disciplined use of style. • Segfaults in Haskell related to its compatibility with lib C. • How to use Musl instead of lib C by employing docker files. • Algebraic types and why static types aren’t hindrances in functional languages. • Preferences for tests or proofs and their role in finding types valuable. • Macros as compile-time functions that are difficult to debug. • A definition of a ‘homoiconic’: high-level syntax which represents the AST. • What makes C macros different from Lisp ones. • Architecture in Elixir and the need for a more user-friendly Haskell. An investment check list Simon Shares Everybody is freaking out on the Capital&Counties (JSE code: CCO) sell off, some 50% off the highs of January. Really driven by three things; it had been flying, stronger ZAR against Sterling and concerns about Brexit. Long term not an issue, so if you love the stock nows your chance to get more cheaper. Kristia van Heerden (Just One Lap CEO) tweeted some thoughts from last weeks podcast where I spoke about expectations. Her comment was that managing expectations doesn't start with investing. It's also about debt, hating on your job. These need fixing long before investing and certainly no investment will make your job better or the debt suddenly disappear. If you expect your investments to save you from your shitty job or debt or pay for things you can't afford, you're in for disappointment. — Kristia van Heerden (@kristiavh) April 18, 2016 Our ETF this week is DBXUS and it has staggering returns of 223% over five years. Or should I just buy ETFs directly? Brenda My daughter is now in Grade 10. Over the years I have been saving in unit trusts for her university fees. I stopped the monthly debit orders at the beginning of the year when I realised that the performance did not justify the fees. I now have almost R500k in two unit trust. On the one hand I do want some capital protection but also want growth with some income so that she can have funds for a car, deposit for a flat etc. I know that I can do better investing in the market. Few comedians can boast a background in Fire Protection Engineering. Even fewer actually know what the heck Fire Protection Engineering is! Comedian Landry hails from outside of Toronto Canada and worked in the FPE world for a years before diving into the world of Stand Up Comedy head first and allowing faith in his talent to guide him where it may. Landry takes us on his journey as the product of both a Jamaican Father that enjoys Earth's natural herbs & a Redneck mother that can kick the legs off of prosthetic Guatemalan's. We learn about his relocating to Atlanta, Georgia and how he developed what he thought was a brilliant first 5 minutes onstage. Dean & Landry also discuss the specifics & economics of comedy classes and how Landry went from open mics to strategically preparing to quit Fire Protection, to winning the Boston Comedy Festival and the World Series of Comedy. Landry has become a favorite headlining comic that just got the news that he is chosen to appear on the 2015 season of “America's Got Talent” on NBC networks and they talk about the importance of being “likeable” & “charming” in order to succeed on television. The two also tell the story about awkwardly dancing in the Salsa club on the ship to getting more comfy to the DJ's Reggae set. Landry is now one of Dean's favorite's to work with and hopes you go check him out live or online somewhere @ComedianLandry as we break bread, continue our Road Warriors Series …and the learn “problem with having curly hair.” We In the Building, son!

Today we are here with our good friend Rob Jones from South Sound Home Inspections and we are excited to share with you a great Tacoma real estate tip.We do a lot of business in north Tacoma, which has older homes, and some of these homes come with unique issues. We brought Rob in to talk about issues with electrical panels that we are seeing in homes that come up regularly in home inspections with homes built between 1950 and the early 1980's. There are 2 different types of panels we are having problems with, The Federal Pacific Electric Panel and the Zinsco panel, which could also could be identified as a Magnetrip or Sylvania panel. One of the myths surrounding these panels is that they were recalled. While they were never actually recalled, they do pose a fire hazard. There are instances across the country of Federal Pacific Electric Panels causing fires because the breakers don't trip when they are intended to trip, and that creates an overload. With the Zinsco panels, breakers can become loose. One way to identify a Federal Pacific Electric Panel is by identifying the letters "FPE" on the breaker. If it doesn't have that, look inside for the name "stab-lok" and also look to see if the breakers are orange-tipped. If you have one of these breakers, you need to replace them as they are a dangerous hazard to your home. If you have any questions about these panels or anything about real estate in general, please give us a call. We want to make sure all of our buyers and sellers are well informed on topics that will be useful to them.
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) was one of the most popular manufacturers of electrical panel boxes in North America from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Millions of their panels were installed in homes across the country. Over time, electricians and home inspectors found Federal Pacific Electric panels failed to provide proper protection to homeowners and their families. The panels can appear to work fine for years, but after one overcurrent or short circuit, they can overheat and become fire hazards.
