Santigold - "High Priestess" from the 2022 album Spirituals on Little Jerk. Santigold returns with a vengeance for Spirituals, her first new full-length in six years.  She explains in a press release, "I loved the idea of calling it Spirituals because it touched on the idea of Negro spirituals, which were songs that served the purpose of getting Black people through the un-get-throughable. In the absence of physical freedom, spirituals have traditionally been music whose sound and physical performance allow its participants to feel transcendental freedom in the moment. That's what this record did for me." Today's Song of the Day came out of a collaboration with Ray Brady and Boys Noize, with additional creative contributions from Psymun and Gayngs' Ryan Olson.  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Poliça's Channy Leaneagh, Erika Dohi, Real Estate's Martin Courtney, Twin Shadow and Bessie Turner discuss the creative process during the pandemic, learning to not put too much pressure on themselves, and what dream concept album they would make if they had infinite time and resources Channy Leaneagh has played violin in folk-rock bands, played as part of 25-piece Minnesotan indie-rock group Gayngs, and collaborated with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. In 2011 she founded the band Poliça, who fuse elements of RnB, experimental indie, dance music, and electronic sounds. Erika Dohi is a New York-based pianist originally from Osaka, Japan, with an eclectic musical background. She has worked on everything from traditional classical music to improvisation, and her debut album I, Castorpollux is as technical as it is emotional. Bessie Turner is a singer songwriter known for her stunning soulful voice, whose beautiful brand of alt-pop has received praise from DJs across Europe. Martin Courtney is from the indie-rock band Real Estate. The American singer and guitarist is known for his dreamy soundscapes and jangly guitar sounds that have dominated the genre during the last decade. Twin Shadow is a Dominican-American singer, songwriter and record producer whose energetic synth-pop sound takes inspiration from Dominican bachata and has achieved huge critical acclaim.

In the eight-plus years Poliça has been a band, the synth-pop project has toured the world, released critically acclaimed albums that have been heard millions upon millions of times and further bolstered the already-sterling musical pedigree of their hometown of Minneapolis. Long before Poliça — an outfit Justin Vernon of Bon Iver once called "the best band [he's] ever heard" — was making incredible, innovative music and climbing the European charts, singer Channy Leaneagh was a young violinist who was agonizing over every mistake she made during recitals. Recently, before the band's headlining performance at Flannel Fest in Milwaukee (just her second show after recovering from a broken back she sustained last winter), Leaneagh invited My First Band host Tyler Maas to join her in a green room RV to discuss her unlikely path to fronting Poliça. After talking about the band's forthcoming full-length that's due out at the end of January, the singer talked about playing fiddle and singing in a bluegrass band while attending college in South Dakota, busking at farmer's markets in Minnesota, getting booked to play a birthday party and the circumstances that led to her winding up in Gayngs. Along the way, they talked about the camaraderie in the Minneapolis music scene, and Maas wondered why Poliça is so big in Belgium. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Poliça ("Driving").

"But then at that point I basically just, stopped. I just stopped. I lost touch with all my friends, lost touch with everybody. I just kind of sat and did dialysis. … I went on that first tour when I was 14 and I didn’t stop playing several shows a month all the way to several shows a week to making what I thought was, you know, the best album that I had made at the time, and then just like stopping. And not doing anything for like 3 years." This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point. The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah's “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector's smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music.    The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode's segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990's.   1. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” – The Weeknd, House of Balloons 2. “Transparency” – d'Eon, Darkbloom 3. “Are You That Somebody?” (clip) – Aaliyah, Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack 4. “Hot Like Fire” Aaliyah Cover (clip) - The xx, B-Side to Crystalized Single 5. “Don't Take it Personal” Monica Cover - White Hinterland, single 6. “Gaudy Side of Town” – Gayngs, Relayted 7. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca 8. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Solange, single 9. “Songs for Women” - Frank Ocean, Nostalgia/Ultra 10. “Wicked Games” - The Weeknd, House of Balloons 11. “Ready for the World” - How to Dress Well, Love Remains   Ear About Town Jesse: “Cupid” (clip) – 112, 112 Jaime: “All My Life” (clip) – K-Ci and JoJo, Love Always Dawson – “Pony” (clip) – Ginuwine, Ginuwine the Bachelor
