Did you know the average female size is 16-18? This is not “plus” size. This is average size! Unfortunately, the fashion industry has not caught up to this fact. I realize there is more size inclusivity, variation in body types displayed on retail sites, and other resources to support you in finding the right fits. But between vanity sizing and fit inconsistencies from one store to another, as well as from one product to another within the same stores themselves, the act of trying on clothing can be incredibly frustrating. Today, I want to talk about why it's not you, it's your clothes. Let's get real about why your size DOESN'T matter at all and what IS actually important to consider when it comes to fit. Buckle up, friend. I think this is a conversation we all need to hear! I talk with legendary experimental pop musician and philosopher TOM KRELL, AKA, How To Dress Well, about art, spirt, and connecting with each other in the vast distances between us.
I was a huge fan of Tom Krell's early work How to Dress Well, though faded when it became a more ordinary RnB proposition. This wildly artistic and conceptual 6th album is criminally underrated and one of the years unsung gems.
"There's a Bladee lyric: kill whatever part of you that isn't true to the heart of you."Ring ring. Tom Krell of How to Dress Well responds to answering machine questions from 1-877-WASTOIDS from folks like Andrew Dost (fun., Metal Bubble Trio) and Patrick McDermott of North Americans. Covered: the mystic visions of Thomas Merton, NBA dream rosters, the deep contemplations about silence and misheard Miley Cyrus lyrics.Check out "I Am Toward You," out Sargent HouseCall us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Conditional prediction markets are evidential, not causal, published by philh on February 8, 2024 on LessWrong. Quick note about a thing I didn't properly realize until recently. I don't know how important it is in practice. tl;dr: Conditional prediction markets tell you "in worlds where thing happens, does other-thing happen?" They don't tell you "if I make thing happen, will other-thing happen?" Suppose you have a conditional prediction market like: "if Biden passes the DRESS-WELL act, will at least 100,000 Americans buy a pair of Crocs in 2025?" Let's say it's at 10%, and assume it's well calibrated (ignoring problems of liquidity and time value of money and so on). Let's even say we have a pair of them: "if Biden doesn't pass the DRESS-WELL act, will at least 100,000 Americans buy a pair of Crocs in 2025?" This is at 5%. This means that worlds where Biden passes the DRESS-WELL act have a 5pp higher probability of the many-Crocs event than worlds where he doesn't. (That's 5 percentage points, which in this case is a 100% higher probability. I wish we had a symbol for percentage points.) It does not mean that Biden passing the DRESS-WELL act will increase the probability of the many-Crocs event by 5pp. I think that the usual notation is: prediction markets tell us but they don't tell us One possibility is that "Biden passing the DRESS-WELL act" might be correlated with the event, but not causally upstream of it. Maybe the act has no impact at all; but he'll only pass it if we get early signs that Crocs sales are booming. That suggests a causal model with (I don't know if I'm using causal diagrams right. Also, those two "early-sales"es are meant to be the same thing but I don't know how to draw that.) But here's the thing that triggered me to write this post. We can still get the same problem if the intervention is upstream of the event. Perhaps Biden will pass the DRESS-WELL act if he thinks it will have a large effect, and not otherwise. Let's say the act has a 50% chance of increasing the probability by 3pp and a 50% chance of increasing it by 5pp. Biden can commission a study to find out which it is, and he'll only pass the act if it's 5pp. Then we have I expect that sometimes you want to know the thing that prediction markets tell you, and sometimes you want to know the other thing. Good to know what they're telling you, whether or not it's what you want to know. Some other more-or-less fictional examples: If Disney sues Apple for copyright infringement, will they win? A high probability might mean that Disney has a strong case, or it might mean that Disney will only sue if they decide they have a strong case. If the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, will inflation stay below 4%? A high probability might mean that raising interest rates reliably decreases inflation; or it might mean that the Fed won't raise them except in the unusual case that they'll decrease inflation. If I go on a first date with this person, will I go on a second? A high probability might might mean we're likely to be compatible; or it might mean she's very selective about who she goes on first dates with. Thanks for listening. This is a first. Today's Q&A Thursday topic wasn't requested by any one listener. But it's a question –or an objection, really– that I've heard countless times over the past decade plus. I get asked about this issue all the time from friends and family, on podcast interviews, and from women in my community. It's time to address it fully right here on the podcast. The question is: How can I dress well on the way to reaching my goal weight? Friend, I get it. In fact, I'm going to give you 8 ways to celebrate where you are right now, get dressed with confidence, and look amazing without wasting money on clothes before you've achieved those coveted weight loss goals. Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or 10 sizes, this episode is for you. It's about time we dive deeper into this topic! I don't want anything holding you back from looking and feeling your best. Mary Michele Nidiffer, Master Style Coach and Founder StyleFinder Boutique www.ShopStyleFinder.com Book your personal/virtual style session with Mary Michele here: https://calendly.com/event_types/user/me Follow Mary Michele on Instagram @stylebymarymichele and @shopstylefinder Being fashion savvy in terms of travel doesn't have to be complicated. I want to share with you my top guidelines for packing light and dressing well. These can be game-changers not only when it comes to travel, but in how you think about your wardrobe beyond your next trip. My Best Tips: 1/ Choose a Color Capsule Select a Color Capsule of 3-4 colors including at least 2 neutrals and 1 color to pop. Don't forget to choose a metal too, for your accessories. Limit prints to just a couple for maximum versatility. Think beyond black! While black is easy, it may not be your best color. What else could you wear instead? Black/Camel/White – leopard print, pink, red, green to pop? Camel/Navy/White – stripes? Navy/Pink/White – polka dots? Turquoise/Green/Royal/White – floral? Camel/Yellow/Cream – lace? Then choose pieces that are in these colors and mix and match them. Layer them, put things together in new and unexpected ways, and see how much mileage you can get from just a few pieces. 2/ Shoes First – You could easily pack an entire suitcase of nothing but shoes, but who wants to lug them around? Shoes can often be the bulkiest items you'll pack, so efficiency is key. 3/ Build a Wardrobe Capsule – Don't Assume you need 7 outfits for 7 days. If you choose 3 outfits that can mix and match, you'll wind up having much more to wear than you thought. Packing List (starting point) Neutral Pants (2-3 pairs) Jeans that fit well Neutral Skirt (wrinkle free) Tops in bold and neutral hues (tanks, tees, etc that are wrinkle-resistant) Dressy tank Neutral Cardigan Anorak Denim Jacket or Relaxed Blazer Large Handbag that can double as Tote Clutch Chic Sneakers Sandals, Wedges 4/ Secret weapons - I call these secret weapons because they expand my wardrobe choices without taking up much space, and pack a big punch. 1. Kimonos 2. Scarves 3. Anything Reversible 5/ Go Wrinkle-Free – Ideally, everything you pack should be wrinkle- resistant and in a fabric that you can easily wash out in the sink if you need to. Many of the fabrics in StyleFinder are just that, and you can roll them up into a small bag and pull them out to look gorgeous! Who has time for ironing? In fact, with just 8 pieces you can get at least 14 different outfits and these pieces would easily fit into a carry-on. But this doesn't even take into account adding in a kimono, scarf or other pieces such as fun tops, shorts, jackets, etc. 1. Cardigan/tank 1/skirt 2. Cardigan/tank1/pants 3. Cardigan/tank 2/skirt 4. Cardigan/tank 2/pants 5. Cardigan/dress 6. Shrug/tank/skirt 7. Shrug/tank/pants 8. Shrug/dress 9. Top/Skirt 10. Top/Pants 11. Cardigan/Top/Skirt 12. Cargidan/Top/Dress 13. Tank/Dress 14. Shrug/Tank/Dress 6/ Final Edit Once you have your pieces selected, now it's time to make your final edit. Take one piece and see how many outfits you can make with it. Take pictures along the way or write down what you're pairing. This is where you'll edit like a pro, leaving out anything extra and only keeping those items you love and know you'll wear. 7/ Create Your Style File So you've made your final selections and taken your pictures. I recommend you download them and print them out. Having a Style File to refer to that's printed will make it easy to get dressed at a moment's notice and will help you feel polished and put-together, even if you're rushed. Print it out, tuck it into your suitcase and rest assured you'll look chic no matter what you're doing. **Checking your bag? Place a copy in your carry-on too, so if something happens to your luggage you have a record of all your outfits for insurance, or if you need to replace anything. Looking great while traveling can be easy when you follow these guidelines. A wardrobe capsule will assure that you have many great options with only a few pieces of clothing. Wrinkle-free fabrics will assure that you look great even after a long day on safari or sightseeing. You'll be surprised how many looks you can create using these methods, but the best surprise of all is that you can now get away with a carry-on! Bon voyage! I'd love for to leave me a 5-star review! Tell me what you loved, what you'd like to hear more of and your biggest takeaway. Many thanks, sweet friend! XO

I met Tom Krell, the main man behind How to Dress Well, at soundcheck. He was negotiating with his band just how they were going to tweak his song "& It Was U" for the show that night. After the band had figured out the song, Tom and me hung out for a bit. He had a bit of a tour cold and you can hear him sniffling as we chat. Which HTDW song is a "consent pop song" and "sex positivity anthem"? Do I get Tom to talk about his dissertation length research project on the history of philosophy? What was it like to work with Taylor Swift and Lorde producer Jack Antonoff? Which cover of a Coldplay song makes Tom geek out? What does Tom think about "truth in art" and "shitty male vibes"? Why does Tom think his music a polarizing among a "certain subset of heterosexual males"? What kind of old man does Tom aspire to be? You'll have to listen to find out. This interview is a fun one. Tracks played on the radio edit... 1) How to Dress Well, Care (2016) "Can't You Tell" 2) How to Dress Well, Care (2016) "Lost Youth/Lost You" 3) Brandy "Magic" single (Coldplay cover) (background/partial) 4) How to Dress Well, Care (2016) "What's Up" 5) How to Dress Well, Care (2016) "Salt Song" NO songs CANCON

State of Wonder will melt your winter blahs down to marshmallowy molten goodness with provocative dance projects, hot new fiction, and music for transformative times (with twirling rifles!).Tahni Holt’s Sensational Disorientation - 1:21When it comes to women, there are two things American culture doesn’t look so kindly on: age and weight. Portland choreographer Tahni Holt’s newest performance delights in both. “Sensation/Disorientation” runs at Reed College’s Diver Studio Theatre as part of White Bird’s Uncaged Series Jan. 18–22.Studio Session with Typhoon’s Kyle Morton - 7:19Kyle Morton is known for the soaring, lyrical songs he writes for his band, Typhoon. Now Morton has put out a solo record called “What Will Destroy You” that gives breath to his somber and contemplative style (not to mention incredible wit). David Byrne Taps Portlander Kelly Pratt For Star-Studded Color Guard Collaboration- 14:56Kelly Pratt, who has worked with everyone from Beirut to Cold Play, first collaborated with David Byrne when Byrne asked him to arrange horns and lead the band for Byrne's "Love This Giant" album and tour with St. Vincent. Then came an even more unusual request. Byrne had become fascinated with the distinctly American phenomenon of color guard, which involves dances using flags, sabers and wooden rifles generally set to marching band music. Byrne invited an incredible roster of musicians, including Nelly Furtado, former Beastie Boy Ad-Rock, How to Dress Well, tUnE-yArDs, and Nico Muhly with Ira Glass, to compose new songs and play them live at Brooklyn's Barclay Center, soundtracking the nation's best winter guard teams. Pratt did all the horn and string arrangements. They filmed it all for a documentary-concert film hybrid called "Contemporary Color" that is playing during the Northwest Film Center’s Reel Music Film Fest on Jan. 21, and will open nationally in March.New Novel from Jon Raymond: Freebird - 21:21The erudite warmth of writer Jon Raymond’s work has spanned screenplays, arts criticism, and fiction. His new novel, “Freebird,” focuses on three generations of a family struggling with the horrors of war, teenage angst, and living with the legacy of a father who survived the Holocaust. Desert Rain: Meeting the Living Building Challenge - 28:51Can a house be more than a place to live? Can it be a demonstration of our highest aspirations? Our columnist-in-residence, Randy Gragg, introduces us to Tom Elliott and Barbara Scott of Bend. It also interests Tom Krell, a songwriter and producer who goes by the name How to Dress Well. After seeing one of the Dardenne brothers films, The Kid with a Bike, he was inspired to make the song "Pour Cyril." In this episode, he'll dig deep into that where that inspiration led him, from transformations within the song, to within the film, and within himself.

On this week's episode, my guest is Tom Krell, the artist slash musician known as @HowtoDressWell. At 10 AM in the conference room of a publicist's office, Tom and I managed to have a really interesting and hopefully entertaining conversation about music, life, and philosophy. He also explained to me how time is not in fact a flat circle but actually a three dimensional cone ▁ ▂ ▃ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ █ ▉ ▊

This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point. The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah's “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector's smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music. The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode's segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990's. 1. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” – The Weeknd, House of Balloons 2. “Transparency” – d'Eon, Darkbloom 3. “Are You That Somebody?” (clip) – Aaliyah, Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack 4. “Hot Like Fire” Aaliyah Cover (clip) - The xx, B-Side to Crystalized Single 5. “Don't Take it Personal” Monica Cover - White Hinterland, single 6. “Gaudy Side of Town” – Gayngs, Relayted 7. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca 8. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Solange, single 9. “Songs for Women” - Frank Ocean, Nostalgia/Ultra 10. “Wicked Games” - The Weeknd, House of Balloons 11. “Ready for the World” - How to Dress Well, Love Remains Ear About Town Jesse: “Cupid” (clip) – 112, 112 Jaime: “All My Life” (clip) – K-Ci and JoJo, Love Always Dawson – “Pony” (clip) – Ginuwine, Ginuwine the Bachelor
