RE-ISSUE: Brand New has been on hiatus since numerous grooming and sexual abuse accusations were made against front-man Jesse Lacey. However, in early March, Brand New announced three reunion tour dates. These were soon followed by the announcement of a nationwide tour. In light of the band's upcoming tour, we are re-issuing a prior subtext episode which outlines the accusations, Lacey's behavior, and his discusses his blanket apology. "Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades" was one of the breakout songs for Long Island band Brand New but it could just as easily be a description of their long running career. The dizzying heights the band had reached in the mid to late 2000's all came crashing down in 2017 when allegations of grooming and sexual misconduct against singer Jesse Lacey were made public. In this episode Kendra and Rich dive into some of those allegations and how little the music landscape has changed since they came to light.REFERENCES Brand New Band Controversy & Jesse Lacey Allegations Explained (The Direct) Brand New Frontman Jesse Lacey Has Been Accused Of Sexual Misconduct With A Minor (UPROXX) Two Alleged Victims of Brand New's Jesse Lacey Detail Years of Sexual Exploitation of Minors (Pitchfork) Brand New's Jesse Lacey Issues Statement Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations (Pitchfork) Jesse Lacey Statement (Facebook) The Story of the Woman Who Accused Brand New's Jesse Lacey of Soliciting Child Pornography (Vulture)If you have been on the receiving end of harm from someone: be it artist, venue owner, audience member, or someone else and would like to share your story on a future episode, please reach out to us at: thisisenoughpodcast@gmail.comVisit our website: https://www.thisisenoughpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/enough.podcastWatch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@enoughpodcastenough. is a feature on Bad Copy: https://www.thebadcopy.com
This week on the show we run down some of the biggest news stories in music from new grooming allegations that have surfaced against Brand New's Jesse Lacey ahead of their controversial reunion tour, Sleep Token released their new song "Caramel" that breaks the fourth wall for the first time and calls out the more extreme members of their fandom. It might be leading to the band ditching the masks at some point. Episode Notes Chloe and Ria lay out the lore behind Taking Back Sunday and Brand New's bitter rivalry that permeated the scene back in the early 00s in the wake of the music industry's hottest feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. DISCLAIMER: By discussing Brand New and Jesse Lacey we are not condoning him or his actions. We are on the side of his victims. We will never discuss Brand New or Jesse Lacey as a standalone subject, only when they are relevant to or contextualize other topics we discuss as it pertains to third-gen emo. NOTE: We cite Eddie Reyes and Jesse Lacey as the founding original members of Taking Back Sunday. However in the book "Where Are Your Boys Tonight" John Nolan states he was the one to start TBS. We just wanted to make sure you knew that we knew the facts about the start of TBS are hard to pin down!

Jesse Lacey had a number one record with Brand New's album Science Fiction. Yet, the same year Brand New would disband and Jesse Lacey would find himself in the middle of a grooming scandal.
A couple of weeks ago we joked that we had been cancelled. We haven't (to our knowledge), but it did lead us to ponder - can we talk about a cancelled band? How would people react to that? And which band should we talk about? The answer wasn't immediately clear to us at the time - there were a few options of course - but it became clearer when we spoke to someone we've wanted to have on the show for a while… So we enlisted the help of emo scholar and all round wonderful person Marisa Androvik. Having completed her masters thesis on this very album, and being a die hard fan of the band much like Mark was before the whole cancellation thing, it felt that Brand New would be our first shot at talking about a band “no one” listens to any more. As it turns out, we had way more to talk about than just the band's albums and the misdeeds of Jesse Lacey. So we hope you'll tune into part one of our Brand New retrospective.

This week take a listen to a band from the Long Island scene, Brand New. Formed in 2000, by bassist and drummer Garrett Tierney and Brian Lane from the ashes of Rookie Lot. The band consists of Jesse Lacey (vocals, guitar), Vincent Accardi (guitar, vocals), Garrett Tierney (bass guitar, vocals), and Brian Lane (drums, percussion). The band is recognized as one of the most influential within the 2000s emo scene, celebrated for making artistic statements with their music. When asked about his influences, lead singer Jesse Lacey referenced Lifetime, Foo Fighters, The Cars, and The Smiths. The band would listen to several bands while in their van, such as Saves the Day, Modest Mouse, and Green Day, among others. For this episode, we listen to Your Favorite Weapon, their debut studio album. The album was released on October 9, 2001. All of the songs on the album were written, within the band's teenage years with some songs being written two or three years before the record came out. This album was heavily influenced by a feud between Lacey and Taking Back Sunday guitarist John Nolan, specifically "Seventy Times Seven". Nolan wrote about the feud from his point of view in Taking Back Sunday's "There's No 'I' in Team". The name of the song is a reference to a Bible passage, specifically Matthew 18:22. Your Favorite Weapon was produced by a friend of the band. The whole album was re-recorded when the original recording was lost on a computer's hard drive. It's the end of Inspector 34 month and we have none other than Patrick Auclair, guitarist & pedal operator of the band, and today we have a very special episode with some heavier-than-usual content. Just a small trigger warning, we are going to be talking about predatory behavior towards minors and although we try not to get graphic, we are discussing real world events about the lead singer, Jesse Lacey, and their impact on the lyrics on this album, some of which, with the context of the victims stories, can come across as disturbing. Today we have a very frank discussion about the difficulties of separating the art from the artist. Sometimes, it's very east to separate the two. Some lyricists don't put much of their personal lives into their work and their lyrics can stand on their own merit. But some write from a very personal place, pouring out a journal on top of their music. In the early 2000s, 'emo' music was all about being as emotional and in your face about it as possible. The music landscape involved countless variations on the "woe is me" trope, complete with nautical themes, and many wrote directly about experiences with depression and shame. Which brings me to Brand New. With the context of knowing Jesse Lacey gaslit and solicited nude photos from underage girls in the early 2000s, the art, which is largely biographical, changed. Knowing that the shame felt throughout "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" was because he finally realized how fundamentally screwed up he was for the abhorrent things he did changed how I will listen to this album forever. It's still one of the best sounding albums of the time, but we can't ignore the skeletons if they're not in the closet anymore, and we decided it would be better to talk about it! With Labor Day behind us, we can finally rest. We no longer have to stay awake through summer like we own the heat. This week we travel back to the year 2001 in Long Island where Jesse Lacey from Brand New is busy being cheated on, dumped, and ditched. In the latest episode, the dads talk about Deja Entendu by the Long Island emo legends—Brand New. Now, before we go any further, let’s be clear, Jesse Lacey is not a good dude. In fact, in the words of one of his victims, “JESSE LACEY IS A PIECE OF SHIT.” Full stop. However, with that being said, Deja Entendu was released back in 2003 when the dads were just boys, so this record (for better or worse) was on heavy rotation during their formative years. Thus, in typically sad dad fashion, they attempt to figure out what makes this album apart of the genre as a whole. So sit back, relax, and wash your damn hands as they discuss Deja Entendu.
The earliest years of Taking Back Sunday marked the end of a friendship between two former best friends - John Nolan from Taking Back Sunday, and Jesse Lacey from Brand New. And "Tell All Your Friends" was the bitter, vengeful lighter fluid on the fire. In this episode, we'll go through each track to highlight the lyrics and vocal work that made the album so effective. I'll also discuss the emo-pop genre, and why I still love "Tell All Your Friends" even 15 years removed from my high school emo phase.

On this week’s very special episode of Friends And Girls, Jill and Cameron discuss an album that has recently gone from being an early-‘00s emo staple to a creepy casualty of the #MeToo movement: Brand New’s 2000 debut LP, Your Favorite Weapon. Yes, Jesse Lacey had been fully cancelled at this point, and our goal with this episode isn’t to redeem Brand New in any way, but to honestly and truthfully explore why misogyny and toxic masculinity is so rampant in every genre of punk, and what we can do to change it.
Whine & Cheese – Episode 14: Joey and Mike invite WRC, expert of all things European, to the show this week to discuss Brand New’s Your Favorite Weapon and the Teen Choice Award winning Eurotrip. Matt Damon’s hair, or lack thereof, is addressed and the gang tries to remember where they parked their cars. The 2004 raunchy, yet weirdly woke, comedy kicks off with a girl cheating on a boy and a song being written about it… plus the record is a dozen tracks of the same thing. Jesse Lacey’s side of the Taking Back Sunday vs. Brand New is presented and everyone takes a side in the beef. In a related incident, Willa beefs with her brother and visits Hot Topic to get all of her emo CDs. B*zzf**d included this episode in their list “36 Emo Podcast Episodes You Need To Hear Before You Die.” Whine & Cheese: A Podcast About Whiny Records and Cheesy Movies began in Spring 2018. Today, I am joined by my long time friend and Brand New expert, Sal. Sal has been a fan of Brand New since around the time their second record came out and approached me immediately following the Jesse Lacey sexual assault allegation statement was made. This episode we cover the statement, why it sucks, why it isn't okay, Kevin Devine's statement, the retiring of songs with bad content, and growing up on Long Island and how lyrics rooted in sexism makes a difference and why we need to educate and do better. Check out our website to see this episode's notes w/ added features! www.podpunkshow.com This week Aaron and John focus on Long Island's, Brand New, and their unexpected 5th full-length, "Science Fiction". They go over why this band is not just another staple of the 2000's pop punk/emo music scene. The well-received, Science Fiction (2017), securing a number one spot on the "Billboard's Top 200 Chart" and the overall feel and direction of, what could be, the band's final release. Also, the boys trade stories over the candy warheads, talk Bruno Mars, Kevin Smith, and try to understand the enigma that is... Nick Cage. Finally - Bronx, the show's resident French Bulldog, surprises everyone with a well thought out segment on what neighborhoods really mean when they post a "Curb Your Dog" sign. Haven't you always wanted to know what your favourite artists ate for breakfast? Or when was the last time they broke the law? Perhaps the best place they ever took a dump? Okay...so maybe not, but we asked them anyway. The second fine chap to face the '10 Questions' was the most hilarious Chris Freeman, formerly of the life changing band Manchester Orchestra. Hear us duet Talking Heads, talk about The Grand Budapest and Jesse Lacey breaking his leg, alongside of other - in hindsight - quite hilarious chat. As Richard Key's always said...it's just banter. Title track is Lost On Me - Balance I do claim rights for any music played on this podcast.

We made it to the 100th episode of our podcast -- now it's time to shake things up. Today we'd like to introduce you to the new podcast: Encore. We've undergone a name change, a little re-brand, and we're coming at you with a brand new special episode this week. This week's topics look at the reasons we decided to make this change, the process we went through in picking our new name and logo, the announcement of a special teespring campaign for limited edition Encore t-shirts, a special segment with guest Drew Beringer (where we talk about new music, what Drew's been up to, technology, and all kinds of stuff), and then -- of course -- we end talking about Jesse Lacey's emotional speech and the thoughts of Brand New calling it a day. We think it's an episode worthy of this milestone. I'd just like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our listeners for going on this journey with us. When we started the podcast I had no idea what it would be or become. I had no idea that I would end up looking forward to recording an episode each week. I had no idea we'd be able to grow it to the audience we have. It sounded fun to try and it has ended up being one of the highlights of my entire career here on the website. So, from Thomas, Drew, and I -- truly thank you. I hope you enjoy this episode, and maybe the next 100, as much as I know I will recording them. We're very excited about the new launch, logo, and t-shirts -- they're only available for about three weeks, so act fast. And if you like our show, we'd love it if you could help spread the word. Maybe tell a friend about the podcast, post about it on Twitter or Facebook, share our new logo, recommend it on Overcast or rate it in iTunes. Any of those things really would go a long way in helping us continue to grow the show and reach even more music fans. If everything goes to plan you won't need to re-subscribe to the podcast (the new version should show up in your podcast player of choice). Sponsor:Portal Frame: Portal Frame are a band from Houston, Texas that just released a brand new 4-song EP called 'Electric Spirit.' You can grab it on Amazon, iTunes, and Google Play, or as a "pay what you want" on Bandcamp. During this week's episode we play a clip of the song "Aftershock." A huge thank you to Portal Frame for sponsoring the 100th episode of our newly named podcast. Show Notes: Discuss this episode Get a limited edition, limited run t-shirt! This week's episode feels like we've taken a time machine into the past. We've got talk about Adam from Taking Back Sunday calling Jesse Lacey a dick, Tom DeLonge releasing solo music that may or may not be songs originally pegged for Blink-182, Brand New finally re-pressing 'Deja Entendu' on vinyl ... and me being stubborn as shit about waking up at some ungodly hour no matter what the reason. Last week's episode focused a lot on Brand New ... this week's is all about the better band: Shone! Ok, not really. But we do touch a little on the marketing strategies of a variety of bands and when and where "viral" marketing actually makes sense. We also look at if we think Jesse Lacey could parlay his band's success into a solo career and what that might sound like. We then have a good discussion on Zane Lowe joining Apple and what that could mean for the music industry, Apple's products and services, and the ramifications on how we consume music. This was a fun one. This week, I'm joined by Kevin Devine, an indie-rock singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. Since the early 2000s, Devine has been making some of the most forward-thinking (and thoughtful) songs in the folk rock genre, drawing on political unrest and personal heartache alike to create songs that are often beautiful but never boring. He's also a member of indie-rock super group Bad Books, featuring Manchester Orchestra; together, the band has released two albums: 2010's self-titled effort and 2012's II. Last year, thanks to a fervent grassroots fanbase, Devine funded two albums via Kickstarter: Bubblegum—the loud one, produced by Brand New's Jesse Lacey—and Bulldozer, a quieter affair helmed by Rob Schnapf. I caught up with Kevin to chat about crowdfunding, how collaboration has affected his songwriting, why idol worship never really leaves you, and much more. Enjoy! ----- Links: Kevin Devine's Website | Twitter | Facebook | Tumblr Buy Bubblegum and Bulldozer on iTunes She Can See Me 7" via Bad Timing Records Voice & Verse Podcast on iTunes | Stitcher | Facebook | Twitter
Taking inspiration from the visual arts, namely paintings from Van Gogh, Jesse Lacy crafts folk tunes that incorporate his stories along with his family's. We spoke with Jesse about his music, his stories, and the confusion he experiences regarding another musical Jesse Lacey.
