World music has a special place in my musical heart and was started by the ground breaking UK group Osibisa in the early 70s with the single music for a Gong Gong, where they created a new genre of music that originated from the early 20th century, Highlife music that is characterised by jazzy horns, multiple guitars and an up-tempo, synth-driven sound. Then came along the song that launched Osibisa, ‘Sunshine Day, the band set my musical ears, heart and soul alight when they Combined disparate sounds from Africa, America, the Caribbean, Osibisa broke traditional genre boundaries to emerge as the ultimate African band for me. This was the start of my appreciation and love for world music, after hearing Osibisa I found a record store that specialized in Reggae/Ska and African music, with guidance from the owner and some of the customers, that started my wonderful journey along the musical yellow brick road of world music. Please enjoy the music I love Ray. Jah Wobble - aka John Wardle - wrote ‘Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer' in 2009. It's just been reworked, expanded and republished and it's well worth reading, full of detail about growing up in the East End, unexploded bombs, pickling factories, grim schooldays, record shops and clubs, the bands he saw and his arrival at Kingsway College where he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious and became a cornerstone of the punk rock inner circle. And then two challenging years as the bassist of Public Image Ltd, the time he worked as a train driver and ticket collector for London Transport, a series of collaborations – Brian Eno, Baaba Maal, Holger Czukay, Sinead O'Connor, Chaka Demus – and some bold and original solo albums (you'll enjoy Island Records' reaction when he pitches an album based on the poems of William Blake). Among this podcast's highlights … … the Kafkaesque world of working for the London Underground in the days when you could “punch an area manager and not get sacked”. … why great rhythm sections are like great football players. … his dad, an El-Alamein survivor, on seeing Mick Jagger on Top of the Pops: “the Rolling Stones should be used for mine clearance.” … Public Image Ltd – “three of the weirdest people you could ever meet”, the band that kept their cash in a shoebox. … “you can't go through life as a tourist”. … the secret of the perfect bass sound. … watching the first Sex Pistols' rehearsal. … seeing Bob Marley & the Wailers at the Lyceum. … the record that reversed his dislike of the Beatles. … why working with Pharoah Sanders was the highlight of his musical life. … his 2023 album, ‘The Bus Routes of South London'. … Jim Reeves, Burl Ives and further sounds of the family homestead. ... and a powerful aversion to hippies. Now one of West Africa's most internationally acclaimed musicians, Baaba Maal trained at a Paris conservatoire and went on to become a kind of musical ambassador, taking stories of his homeland all around the world. He has collaborated with Brian Eno and film composer Hans Zimmer, recorded an album with Mumford and Sons, and was a key member of the Africa Express touring project led by Damon Albarn. A festival favourite, Baaba Maal has energized crowds at Glastonbury and the BBC Proms alike. More recently, Marvel fans know him as the voice of Wakanda, having sung on the Black Panther movie soundtracks. Baaba Maal talks about his early life in Senegal where, as the son of a fisherman, he wasn't expected to become a singer. He discusses the role of the griot in Senegalese storytelling and musical culture. He recalls early song-gathering trips around West Africa with his friend and collaborator Mansour Seck, his formal musical training in Paris, the powerful voice of Senegalese singer Sory Kandia Kouyaté, and meeting Nelson Mandela. Producer: Edwina Pitman
Stephen Sackur speaks to the acclaimed Senegalese musician Baaba Maal. His records and musical collaborations have won him millions of fans worldwide, and he's intent on helping his native Sahel region overcome its many challenges. Can this music icon make a difference?
Featuring music written by Rafael Hernández Marín and performed by Xenia Rubinos and Ibrahim Ferrar / Omara Portuondo, new music by Senegalese artist Baaba Maal, a lost classic from Lybia's The Free Music & Najib Alhoush and more!
Baaba Maal, Tricky, Jah Wobble and Chi-Chi Nwanoku discuss the influence of African musical roots and traditions in Western classical music, the importance of collaboration, and rhythm and its position in the song writing process. Baaba Maal was born into a family of fishermen in the north of Senegal, but rather than go into the family business, he studied music in Dakar and Paris. Since then, he has recorded 14 albums, worked on the Black Panther soundtrack, and collaborated with Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Mumford and Sons and U2. Tricky is an icon of the hugely influential Bristol music scene. He grew to prominence as a member of the genre-defining act Massive Attack, before launching his own successful solo career working with Neneh Cherry, Björk, and Bobby Gillespie. In 2021 he released his latest album under the name Lonely Guest, which featured Lee “Scratch” Perry, Idles' Joe Talbot, and Maxïmo Park's Paul Smith. Jah Wobble is a music enthusiast, bass guitarist, and singer from East London. He met John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, at college, and following the Sex Pistols' break-up, they formed Public Image Ltd. When he left the band, his solo projects led him to collaborate with a broad range of artists including Brian Eno, Chaka Demus, and Baaba Maal. Chi-chi Nwanoku is a classical double bass player from London, who took up the instrument aged 18 after her sprinting career was cut short by injury. As well as being a successful musician, she is also the founder and director of a foundation which supports Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical musicians, and was awarded a CBE for services to music and diversity in 2022..

“I'm a nomadic person, I don't want to stay in one place”. When Baaba writes his music, he takes inspiration from the places he visits. “When I started travelling, I came to London, I bought cassettes, I appreciated different people. And when I got a chance to meet them, we sat down and wrote songs”. But no matter how much Baaba has travelled, and to where, he always brings his music “back home to Podor, Senegal”. Baaba has released his first solo album in seven years, ‘Being', which is inspired by working on the soundtrack to Black Panther and the issues facing the world today, including climate change and desertification in African countries. In today's Ways to Change the World, Baaba sits down with Krishnan Guru-Murthy to discuss the power of music and why we are all politicians in our own way when it comes to helping the world. It's finally here! The heavily anticipated 30th feature film from Marvel Studios has arrived with "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever". It's been an emotional wait for this film but now that it has hit theaters it's time to get down to the nitty gritty and discuss any and all things surrounding this movie. We start off discussing the success and impact of the original "Black Panther" and how it came to be (2:04). We then talk about he hardship that this movie had to go through from the death of Chadwick Boseman, to the rewriting of the story, to the big question of if T'Challa should be recast, as well as the opening weekends box office numbers. As per usual we go into our nom-spoiler big picture thoughts on the film (25:57), and then make our way into the spoiler filled parts of the movie following our character by character breakdowns (43:10). This is a long one but it's been a special one for us, so we appreciate everyone for rocking with us the way you do, thank you for your ears. Wakanda Forever! RIP Chadwick Boseman 2BlackNerds.com (Check out our '2 Black Nerds Forever' collection inspired by the film, a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Colon Cancer Foundation in remembrance of the late and great Chadwick Boseman) (Songs: Welcome Home x Ludwig Goransson and Baaba Maal, Anya Mmiri x Ckay and PinkPantheress, Alone x Burna Boy, T'Challa x Ludwig Goransson)
