Chances are you've seen the infamous "You wanna play 21?" promo by Jake "The Snake" Roberts from the Heroes of Wrestling pay-per-view. While the promo was not one of Jake's finer moments, it has inspired the topic of this, the twenty-first episode of Music of the Mat Remix. Andrew and returning guest Maura Johnston (Boston Globe, Rolling Stone) play songs that came out the year they turned 21 (2013 and 1996, respectively). This week "How We Heard It" is going to the dogs ... and cats and horses and any other critter you can think of. When your hosts decided to explore songs about animals, they couldn't believe how many old and new gems they turned up, as well as some truly terrible songs. Artists of every genre have found excuses to do songs about animals, and they've come up with just about everything. Songs about dogs alone run the gamut from daydreaming about your dog to losing your dog to wanting to be someone else's dog (don't ask). Paul McCartney got enigmatic, and you won't believe what Dolly Parton did with a dog song. There's more: cat songs, elephant songs, lion songs, songs about sea creatures ... and a surprising array of songs about horses and ponies by the likes of Lil Nas X, Kacey Musgraves, Chappell Roan, Ginuwine, Laid Back and one oldie by The Osmonds that was one of the strangest turns in pop-music history. Join us and let the animal lover in you run wild.

Opening:     •    The crew (Jordan, Mr. Williams Comedy, and Jason) open with playful banter about comedy names and Jason's signature response: “I'm dynamite.”     •    They officially announce the Three's Comedy Tour, with stops in:     •    Atlanta (Stage Door Theater – May 29)     •    Ferryville, VA (Copper Fox Distillery – July 18–19)     •    Williamsburg, VA (Copper Fox Distillery – August 29–30)     •    Plans to add a June date are in the works.     •    The idea is to build synergy between the podcast and their stand-up acts, with potential for live podcast tapings in the future. Middle Segments:     •    60 Hours in a Day? A long and hilarious debate unfolds about time, days, and Earth's rotation. Jonathan jokingly proposes that a true day should be 60 hours, sparking back-and-forth arguments about circadian rhythms, Mars time, and how arbitrary time systems really are.     •    Blue Origin Controversy: The group discusses Jeff Bezos' latest Blue Origin space flight, which featured an all-women crew (including Katy Perry and Gail King). While the mission was promoted as a feminist milestone, the hosts critique it as tone-deaf, self-serving PR, especially given the political climate and global instability.     •    Special note: They show empathy for Amanda Nguyen, a survivor-turned-activist whose spaceflight dream had a deeper meaning.     •    They slam the commercialism and celebrity inclusion, joking about a “Blue Orgy” and mocking the performative nature of the launch.     •    Festival Fails & Coachella Moments:     •    They react to d4vd's viral Coachella backflip fail and compare it to a stage dive gone wrong by Ginuwine and a now-infamous Miguel leg-drop.     •    They roast festival stunts, influencer culture, and the generational divide in handling on-stage mishaps. Final Segment: Bernie Sanders at Coachella     •    A surprise Coachella appearance by Bernie Sanders sparks heated (and hilarious) debate:     •    Jonathan argues that Bernie's message is necessary and urgent, even if it interrupts the party vibe.     •    Others point out the tension between escapism and activism—but agree that in this political moment, awareness is critical.     •    They close with sharp political commentary balanced with comedy and a reminder that the world can't be ignored just because we're having fun.

Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 4, Episode 20, Par 5, which originally aired on Apr 7, 2015 and was written by Lamorne Morris and Rob Rosell and directed by Trent O'Donnell. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Fawn takes Jess to a golf tournament to get new computers for her students while Winston starts dating someone new. Cece also helps Schmidt get ready for a photo op with Fawn while dealing with her own feelings for him. This episode got a 7.5/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly;  and we both had the same favorite character: Winston! While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:K-Ci & Jojo - When Winston was meeting KC, he was jokingly asking, “Yo, KC, where JoJo at?", responding to himself, “In rehab, probably.”Nick Nolte - Winston said he saw Nick Nolte in the park once.Gollum / “One Ring” - Cece was telling Jess that she was going to help Schmidt with an emergency and Jess said she couldn't go over there alone because it would be like “Gollum hanging out with the One Ring.”Big Bird / Sesame Street - Jess, uncomfortable while networking, makes a joke about someone's shoes looking like they chopped off Big Bird's feet and Fawn urged her not to make jokes about murdering Sesame Street puppets.O.J. Trial - Winston shared that Nick had lost the ability to talk about race with Winston when he focused in on the white Bronco car during the O.J. trial when they were kids.Eddie Murphy / [The Nutty Professor]  / Seinfeld - When discussing race, Nick was trying to show he did a good impression of Eddie Murphy doing his Hercules bit from The Nutty Professor. Coach was able to do the impression much better. Winston said Nick was not able to comment, but Winston shared it was not the same thing when he did the Seinfeld impression.Ghostbusters - Winston shared that he knows they're going to recruit from law enforcement if there are ever real Ghostbusters.Ginuwine - When Winston showed up at KC's workplace, they put on a song for Winston to dance to and Winston asked if they had a song by Ginuwine.Additionally we mentioned in our podcast episode that we'd include the video for “There Are No Cats in America” which you can find on Youtube here. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 21! Tank, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and record producer. He began his career as a backing vocalist for R&B singers Aaliyah and Ginuwine, and signed a recording contract with the former's record label, Blackground Records as a performing act in 1998. His 2001 single, "Maybe I Deserve" peaked within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and led his debut studio album, Force of Nature (2001). It peaked within the top ten of the Billboard 200, while his second album, One Man (2002), peaked within the top 20 and was met with mixed critical reception. Following a five-year hiatus, he entered a joint venture with Motown to release his third album, Sex, Love & Pain (2007). Met with his furthest commercial success, it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and was preceded by the Billboard Hot 100-top 50 single, "Please Don't Go". He parted ways with the labels in favor of Atlantic Records to release his following albums: Now or Never (2010), This Is How I Feel (2012), Stronger (2014), Sex, Love & Pain II (2014), and Savage (2017), the latter of which spawned the platinum-certified single "When We". Following his ninth album Elevation (2019), his tenth album, R&B Money (2022) was announced as his final due to hearing loss in his right ear, which hampered his musical ability.[3] In 2007, he formed the R&B trio TGT with contemporaries Ginuwine and Tyrese, with whom he released one studio album (2013). Along with recording, Tank has been credited with songwriting and production for other artists including Kelly Rowland, Chris Brown, Monica, Jamie Foxx, Omarion, LeToya Luckett, NLT, and KeKe Wyatt. His other ventures include his record label R&B Money, which has signed frequent collaborator J. Valentine; the two began hosting a namesake podcast in 2022, which enlists prominent figures in the genre as guests. Tank has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and his podcast was nominated for Best Work of Music Journalism - Multimedia at the 2023 International Music Journalism Awards.

Disclaimer: This Episode contains discussions of physical and sexual abuse. To skip past these discussions skip to (4:54) There is no shortage of innovators in Hip-Hop, though for the most part the genre has been a world dominated by male artists. But from her mind-bending, award-winning music videos to her experimental approach to producing, Missy Elliott has changed the game. She has been one of the most forward-thinking minds in hip-hop since she first made her debut in 1997 - regardless of gender. In her early days as an artist, Missy would form a R&B group called Fayze with friends La'Shawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott. Through her friend Melvin Barcliff, who rapped under the name Magoo, she met Timothy Mosley, a local DJ producer operating as Timmy Tim. He would produce some demos for Fayze, including a single called “First Move.”  Fayze would impress DeVante Swing, a producer, songwriter and singer for the rising R&B group Jodeci, after singing a cappella for him following a concert. Swing invited the group to record in New York City, along with their producer Tim, who Swing renamed “Timbaland” after the popular Timberland construction boots that were taking over hip-hop fashion. Missy got her first gig as a songwriter, producer and rapper on a song called “That's What Little Girls Are Made Of,” the debut single by Raven-Symoné, the eight-year-old star of The Cosby Show. But Missy quickly learned the hard way that the music biz wasn't ready to welcome her with arms wide open. Missy was blindsided though when they cast a smaller, lighter-skinned actress to lip-sync to her lines in the song's music video. At that point, she realized that she would have to work even harder to be taken seriously as an artist. Eventually Missy and Timbaland would become their own as a songwriting/production team. They co-wrote songs for artists like 702, Busta Rhymes and the debut album by Ginuwine, which Timbaland produced in full. But it was their work on One In A Million, the second album by teenage R&B sensation Aaliyah, that really opened the door for Missy as an artist.  Timbaland's flickering, clap/snap sounds on One In A Million set Aaliyah apart from the rest of R&B, introducing a fresh and futuristic style that no one had ever heard before. And the duo would hit it big when the album's lead single "If Your Girl Only Knew" topped Billboard's US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, while peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. One in A Million would end up going triple platinum in the US, selling more than eight million copies worldwide, but the impact was immediate. Overnight, labels were scouring to offer Missy a record deal, but she was quick to see right through them. Through her own label, distributed by Elektra records - Missy Elliot would release the albums Supa Dupa Fly and Miss E... So Addictive - which gave her mainstream exposure as an artist - with her and Timbaland pushing their production into new territory. By 2001, Missy would release the seminal Miss E... So Addictive which not only included lead single "Get Ur Freak On", but her most popular song of all time... This is the story of Missy Elliot's "Work It" with newly unearthed audio from Missy Elliott herself!

Born Cory DeWayne Robinson January 23 1975, This self produced arsenal of talent has been compared to the stylings of great artists' like Usher, Donell Jones, Ginuwine, Sam Cooke, Terence Trent Darby and Musiq Soul child just to name a few. By the pairing up of urban beats, clever arrangements and smooth but sometimes raspy soulful lyrics, Cory comes with the type of sound that one can only call nothing but absolute genius. Cory first set off to join the ranks of some of the industries tightest urban R&B artist, He was scouted and signed to the Hawaiian based Record label “Homeless Records” from which brought him notable exposure and a number of head nods from labels such as "LaFace Records". With the album “Tell me”  Robinson was seen in various performances including his first national televised competition where he was challenged by American Pop and R&B singer songwriter “Neyo” on MTV's prelude to American Idol called the “The Cut” (then hosted by TLC's Lisa "Left eye" Lopez), while also been chosen to open for artist such as Brian McKnight. Cory's first independent project "The Lady disk" gave us just a taste of the vibe Cory Robinson could bring to the industry. With its cool and sometimes seductive way of story telling, the lyrics seem to jump out of the speakers and into your imagination.

Angelo Ellerbee is an institution!  The public relations maverick has worked with and guided the careers of icons and ingenues, legends and leading actors and he has built a legacy that continues to flourish decades after he began.  The Newark, NJ native, who began his stellar career working in the fashion industry--designing, styling and hosting shows as fundraisers to combat the global issue of HIV/AIDS--soon found himself in the world of publicity and artist relations,In 1985, Ellerbee founded Double XXposure Public Relations, working with artists and record labels to champion the careers of such luminaries as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack and reggae giants like Shabba Ranks and Patra, while also shaping the careers of supermodels and burgeoning business titans and industry leaders.  But the thing that caught the attention of everyone in the music industry was that Angelo Ellerbee had a keen sense of artist development, a component of the music industry that had helped to establish artists of the Motown era especially (but an essential part of most labels) that had slowly disappeared in the ever-changing landscape of music. While continuing to serve as CEO of his flagship enterprise, Ellerbee also went on to serve as Senior VP of Publicity for Island Def Jam Records, where he brought R&B supergroup Dru Hill, music legend Mr. Biggs aka Ronald Isley of the legendary Isley Brothers, and gospel superstar Karen Clark Sheard to prominence. Double XXposure managed such major talents as sex symbol/singer Ginuwine, pop superstar Laura Branigan and rap icon DMX.  Ellerbee took the helm of DMX's career, serving as President and General Manager of rap superstar's Bloodline Records.  Under his leadership, Ellerbee cultivated the Def Jam imprint into a full-fledged recording company. In addition, he managed the multi-platinum recording artist himself, as he collected more than 22 million record sales in his global tallies. Never one to settle or sit on his laurels, Ellerbee has continued to expand his presence in media, writing 3 best-selling books [WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?, ASK ANGELO (46 Years of Industry Excellence) and his latest tome THE SENSE OF SUCCESS, where his no-nonsense style helps the readers tackle difficult shifts and struggles in their quest for success).   He continues to work in television, partnering with BET Networks to produce 4 shows, including Harlem Hall of Fame, which will honor and celebrate the culture of the renown hamlet and such Harlem heroes as the original Black sex symbol, actor Billy Dee Williams, Congressman Charles Rangel, fashion maverick Audrey Smaltz, leading lady of Hollywood Leslie Uggams and music's buoyant bad boy for life, producer/recording artist/fashion mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs.  Ellerbee also works passionately with the LGBTQ community, having served as Chairman of the Board of NYC's Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) and working with Unity Fellowship Church Movement on their 35th Anniversary Gala under the leadership of Archbishop Carl Bean, who recorded "Born This Way" during his own stellar career at Motown Records.  Angelo Ellerbee is the Sultan of Swag and his capacity to transform and translate the culture has made him an industry giant for decades, and he's still standing.  That's what institutions do!© 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAu

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where Craig first meets Typhoon! Donna and Joe's wedding is tomorrow! We find Leslie and Ben preparing to leave for the rehearsal dinner that night, only to find Jennifer Barkley at their door. Assuming Jen is once again going to ask her to run for office, Leslie is surprised when instead, Jen turns to Ben and suggests he run for Congress. Although Leslie would love for him to run, Ben is uncertain, so when they arrive at Tom's Bistro for the rehearsal dinner, Leslie suggests he pretend as if he were running to see how it feels, so Ben proceeds to schmooze people, and they both start drinking ... a lot. The next morning Leslie & Ben wake up hungover in their hotel room, and discover Ben left drunk messages for Jennifer where he apparently accepted the offer to run for Congress. Meanwhile, as Craig helps them go over last minute details at the church, Donna asks maid of honor April to keep the Meagles in line at her wedding, as her family loves drama. During the rehearsal dinner, things seem to be going smoothly, as April and Andy manage to wrangle all the trouble-causing Meagles in the kitchen. The next day, as the wedding creeps closer and closer, things seem to be going okay .. as far as we can tell. Finally, at the rehearsal dinner, Tom shares with Ron how much he likes Lucy, and how he could see having a life with her, even marrying her. Later, Ron accidentally tells Lucy some of the things that Tom said. Lucy seems a bit surprised at this, and Tom is very upset with Ron for spilling the beans. At Tom's urging, Ron tries to rectify the situation by talking with Lucy again, but unfortunately his desire to clarify only makes things worse when he tells her Tom wants to marry her, have multiple kids with her, and also, to live on an island with her and their multiple kids. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Can Ben correct his mistake with Jen Barkley? Can April continue to keep the Meagle drama out of the proceedings? Will Ron ever get to enjoy the rehearsal dinner food? Would Leslie and Ben be able to make a Congressional run work? Does Donna regret the zero-drama policy? Can Tom and Lucy get past this awkward moment in their relationship? Does their babysitter Roz survive the night with their 3 kids? Will Donna and Joe actually get married? What does Tom plan on calling his personal island? Loyal viewers, this might just be the final wedding episode in Parks and Recreation! How will it rank? Could it possibly be better than April and Andy's? Better than Leslie and Ben's? Stay tuned to find out!
