Welcome back to Transmissions, we're so glad to have you tuned into this show. This week, a talk taped earlier this summer with Martin Courtney of Real Estate. Real Estate has been releasing great albums since the late 2000s. This year, they released their sixth LP, called Daniel. Produced in Nashville by Daniel Tashian, who produced Kacy Musgraves' breakthrough Golden Hour, it's a mellow, refined sound—deeply rooted in acoustic ‘90s rock textures and dappled with pedal steel. It's a record about growing up, and accepting all that comes with accumulated time spent here on earth. Reviewing the album for Aquarium Drunkard, Ian Grant of our Talkhouse labelmates The Jokermen podcast notes, “While critics have made a habit of harping on the (perceived) consistency of Real Estate's sound, less acknowledged is Courtney's evolution as a lyricist…approaching forty and a father several times over, his focus as a writer has grown far beyond the green aisles of his youth. Daniel finds the man in a contemplative state, concerned about the world and his place in it, questing after whatever degree of contentment any of us can hope for in a future of diminished horizons.” Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Real Estate, a band with New Jersey roots but now spread out around the country, convened in Nashville to lay down their sixth LP, Daniel. A return to some of the early sounds of Real Estate -- uncomplicated, melody-forward, easy and breezy indie rock -- 'Daniel' showcases the songwriting of frontman Martin Courtney, who spoke with Celia about his vision for this full-length. Also reached to talk about the making of WNXP's Record of the Week was Daniel Tashian, the Nashville-based artist and producer who led Courtney and his bandmates through a quick, nine-day recording blitz in RCA Studio A on Music Row.
Ian chats with Real Estate's Martin Courtney on the occasion of their beautiful, un-Googleable new record, Daniel. COP "DANIEL" NOW REAL ESTATE ON TOUR THIS SPRING
I had such a good time interviewing Martin Courtney of Real Estate back in 2022 for his solo album that we're doing it again! This time, Real Estate has a great new album out called Daniel on Domino Records. Courtney and I once again go deep into his songwriting process, including how it's changed since his solo album. And of course we talk children's literature too.
Real Estate singer and chief songwriter Martin Courtney joins Headliner for an in-depth look at the making of the band's sixth studio album Daniel.
When Real Estate's fifth album The Main Thing was released to fairly mixed results, was it time for a reset? In a sense, yes. For band leader Martin Courtney, it was time to get back to songs. After all, without songs, bands are just jamming, right? He set the bar high too, inspired mostly by the 1992 R.E.M. classic Automatic For The People.Besides, you cannot call in a producer like Daniel Tashian without being able to play him songs of exceptionally high standard. For a start, Tashian produced Kacey Musgrave's modern classic Gold Hour, as well as writing a bunch of understated classics with his own band The Silver Seas. Consider then, that the batch of songs landing on the new Real Estate album Daniel were so good that Tashian (who co-writes with many of the artists he produces) only tinkered with them. And in doing so, hopefully gave each one a liberal sprinkling of his magic song fairy dust. “In terms of his input into the songs it was minimal. Daniel was more like a cheerleader in the studio. He's so fun - he'll be jumping around and hype you up - so it's much less daunting in the studio having him around. Graig Alvin mixed the record, and he's also won Grammy's too. We had high-powered people in the room”. Despite all this, Martin sounds surprised at the possibility of creating a classic album, although Daniel has the potential to be just that. What that means, in this day & age, is another thing entirely. Yet the band has been in classic album territory before, in 2014, with Atlas - songs from which brightened up daytime radio, found their way onto the biggest indie streaming playlists - and even landed that record on the Billboard top 40 and UK album charts. A decade on, with the music landscape much altered, the expectations for Daniel are less certain. In Courtney's own words “I know there is a good chance that it will come and go, like everything else these days”. But be assured that if you do become familiar with the record, it will pay you back dividends for a long time to come.So where does a band like Real Estate fit into the modern music industry landscape? Still in the game and getting better, the band's cultural caliber is steadily rising. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
Martin Courtney is giving it another shot. Daniel (23 February via Domino) follows 2020's The Main Thing, which was underpinned by Courtney's relationship with being a full-time musician. In this episode, he reflects on the unexpected attention his band received in their early iteration and how his daily life is about to be shaken up by the touring schedule of a new album. Poliça's Channy Leaneagh, Erika Dohi, Real Estate's Martin Courtney, Twin Shadow and Bessie Turner discuss the creative process during the pandemic, learning to not put too much pressure on themselves, and what dream concept album they would make if they had infinite time and resources Channy Leaneagh has played violin in folk-rock bands, played as part of 25-piece Minnesotan indie-rock group Gayngs, and collaborated with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. In 2011 she founded the band Poliça, who fuse elements of RnB, experimental indie, dance music, and electronic sounds. Erika Dohi is a New York-based pianist originally from Osaka, Japan, with an eclectic musical background. She has worked on everything from traditional classical music to improvisation, and her debut album I, Castorpollux is as technical as it is emotional. Bessie Turner is a singer songwriter known for her stunning soulful voice, whose beautiful brand of alt-pop has received praise from DJs across Europe. Martin Courtney is from the indie-rock band Real Estate. The American singer and guitarist is known for his dreamy soundscapes and jangly guitar sounds that have dominated the genre during the last decade. Martin Courtney of Real Estate says that songwriting can be a "painstaking" process, so he's trying something new. "I'm trying to plow through it, take a step back, then chip away at it," he told me. He's also found fulfillment in writing about the small details of everyday life, trying to work those ideas into his songs. But he always has Strega Nona to fall back on.Courtney's new solo album is called Magic Sign.

Ever since the band released their self-titled debut back in 2009, Real Estate – led by my guest on this episode, Martin Courtney – have been one of my favourite bands. Real Estate released their last record - the excellent The Main Thing - back in 2020, weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the western world. And yet out the subsequent madness/sadness came the New Jersey born songwriter's second album, the woozy, dreamy, indie rock swell of Magic Sign, which again sees Martin retreat to the fragile innocence of his teenage years, framing those experiences as a road map for an escape from the misery of the shutdown of gigs, records, and everything else a musician and music fan holds dear to them. I'm not saying Magic Sign is a fair trade for all that we lost, but it's a great record, and proof that beauty can be forged, even in times of darkness. The record is out on Domino right now. I suggest you investigate, if you haven't done so already. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who are meeting for the first time, which we haven't had in an episode in quite a while. Martin Courtney and Tim Darcy. Until recently, Darcy was the frontman of the band Ought, which released three fantastic, brainy art-punk albums from their home base of Montreal—despite the fact that Darcy is, in fact, “secretly American.” Ought split up pre-pandemic but that wasn't really public news until the announcement of the existence of Darcy's new band, Cola, which he started just a couple of years ago along with Ought bassist Ben Stidworthy and Weather Station/US Girls drummer Evan Cartwright. Just last month, Cola released their debut album, Deep In View, and it feels like a sort of back-to-basics take on their old band—but still fresh and exciting. Darcy is a guy who takes his lyrics seriously, and though he clearly had a great time making the record, there's a darkness to it that recalls the best post-punk and trebly art-rock of the past 40 years, from Talking Heads to Parquet Courts. Martin Courtney is the singer and guitarist of Real Estate, the New Jersey-born band that has released five albums of songs that battle gently the urges toward pop-song structure and a slight psychedelic haze. Real Estate had particularly bad timing luck with regard to that worldwide pandemic we've all talked so much about over the past couple of years, releasing an album just weeks before the world shut down, resulting naturally in canceled tours and other plans. Instead of diving into another Real Estate album during the lockdown, Courtney decided to take a path of less resistance and record his second solo album. As he jokes in this conversation, most solo albums tend to be an excuse for an artist to indulge their more out-there impulses, but his impulses tend to lead him back toward more structured pop songs. He came up with a killer batch for this record, which is called Magic Sign. Darcy and Courtney hadn't met before this chat, but that doesn't stop them from getting into a great conversation: They talk about how podcasts might be boring—and how that's okay (!?). They get into Courtney's slight sense of disillusionment with music in general. Then they bring it back to creative desires: They are both guys itching with ideas and ready to get them out to the world. And, as fate would have it, both are going to be touring this summer, god willing. So get out there and see them, but first, check out this chat. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Tim Darcy and Martin Courtney for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast platform, and check out the great new records by both of this week's guests. We speak with their singer and songwriter Martin Courtney from his home in upstate New York about Chris getting his booster, comparing influencers to supermodels, having to drive across state lines to buy groceries at Whole Foods, the literal real estate market, CSA boxes, we compare and contrast our very different tour lives, when your fans look exactly how they're supposed to look, sync talk turns into score talk, we figure out who did all the turntablist “cuts” on their last record, having Red Bull pay to get Rivers Cuomo to play a song with them, managing band life while having three kids, and why sometimes you gotta give em the iPad when its time for daddy to podcast. instagram.com/realestateband twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howlonggone/support
Will & Grace's Sean Hayes talks about his pandemic puppy, his new medical podcast HypocondriActor, and his early days working as a piano player for a dinner theatre. Then, he's challenged to two games based on his obsession with medical stories. The stars of the comedy series Rutherford Falls, Jana Schmeiding and Ed Helms, face off in a game of This, That, or the Other. Real Estate bandmates Martin Courtney and Alex Bleeker compete in a 90s themed music parody game about things from the 1890s, 1790s, 1690s... you get it.
Real Estate are an American indie rock band from Ridgewood New Jersey.Noted for their style of warm, hazy indie rock, with breezy melodies and jangly guitars, the band has experienced numerous lineup changes throughout the years but have stuck to a consistent laid-back approach, lyrically exploring themes such as their early high school suburban roots, through to parenthood. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
Our guest this week on Transmissions is Martin Courtney of Real Estate. On March 26th, the long-running New Jersey group releases its new EP, Half a Human, which embraces the jammier side of the band and continues the stylistic explorations of 2020's The Main Thing. We discussed record stores, adjusting to life without live music, Twin Peaks, and Courtney's 2015 solo album Many Moons—and its forthcoming follow up. We hope you enjoy this conversation. Sorpresa. Escuchar audio
We've been following the decade long career of Real Estate since the beginning. Now in their tenth year, they recently released their fifth album The Main Thing. The album comes at a time when the band previously in personnel flux has solidified their line-up and are set for a new beginning of sorts. It's always hard, as a band, to figure out where they want to go sonically as they mature as an act, if the circumstances afford them that opportunity. The Main Thing while still rooted in poppy hooks, vocal harmonies and solid songwriting does denote a new kind of sound for the band. So we caught up with Martin Courtney and Alex Bleeker of Real Estate to talk about the new album, a few interesting projects and a whole lot more. Stick around for the whole show and hear two great solo performances of Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter tunes as Martin Courtney tackles Stella Blue and Alex Bleeker handles Dupree's Diamond Blues, performances taken from a special Live from Out There tribute to Garcia and Hunter. Real Estate singer-songwriter Martin Courtney jumps on the line with Kyle Meredith to gab about new album The Main Thing. Courtney shares how he tried out new sounds to get invigorated about writing music again and called in outside collaborators like Amilia Meath from Sylvan Esso. He also explains how parental anxiety plays a big role in the songs as he at once sees his own childhood through his children’s eyes while struggling with a potentially harmful world that they’re growing into. Our guest today is the musician Martin Courtney. Martin is the lead singer and guitarist in the band Real Estate. He’s been big into Elliott Smith since he was in high school and can even be found tweeting about Elliott from time to time – which is actually how we realised he was a fan in the first place. In this interview, we discuss his favourite song pick, we talk about how he came across Elliott first time and Martin also mentions a producer he’s worked with who may have some hidden Elliott live recordings. After we speak to Martin, we have a listener submission from Jessica Smith and we also talk more about our charity tribute show in London on 6th August (tickets are now available for this event here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/elliott-smith-50th-birthday-party-tickets-63494629145). Jason and Matt listen to the debut album from Real Estate on Woodsist Records. A perfect summertime, country cocktail, chill out record. Ernest and humble, three friends from high school know each other well enough to get to this celebration of the mundane. Unapologetically suburban, they waste the days away on the razor's edge of building up the tempo or making any kind of statement about the world. Matt says "they drink two beers and go to bed." It's a great, comfortable smothering slanket. Email - records@harveylovesharvey.com Twitter - @welisten21 Instagram - welisten2records Leave a message on the Welisten hotline - 978-707-9899

Just got home from work, and it's so warm and muggy and gross that the outside feels like the inside of a sewer. YUCK! Luckily, Random Old Records Podcast is back with a brand new episode containing 58 minutes and 7 seconds of chilled-out jams that feel like a blast of sweet A/C to the face. You can download it for free HERE.Episode #52 starts off with some recent blissed-out ballads from the likes of Martin Courtney, Salad Boys, and The Lavender Flu, then flows into two sizzling sets of 60s sunshine pop and soft psych. You'll hear the brooding and tense "Her Name Is Melody" from Adrian Pride (a pseudonym for tripped-out troubadour Bernie Schwartz), recently featured on the Nuggets: Hallucinations comp re-released on Record Store Day 2016. You'll also hear the fuzzed-out "Bad Dream" from the heavily mustachioed Dick Domane, included on Pet Records' essential Mystic Males collection, and the chiming folk-rocker "Leaving It All Behind" by The Toads, included on Pet Records' also essential It's Zimmerman's World LP (and a whole lot more from Pet Records since they are AMAZING and you need everything they ever put out). This one took a lot of time to put together, just to ensure a solid sequence of good vibes from front to back. I hope everyone enjoys it! I've been busy cataloging and organizing my 7" collection for the first time in many years, so July's episode will feature an hour of top jams culled from my racks of 45s! In the meantime, make it your goal to seek out the fantastic debut DOUBLE LP from The Lavender Flu, entitled Heavy Air. It features former Hunches guitarist Chris Gunn going long and weird on a sprawling set of suburban loner back porch pop with a crew of guests. If you're sick of checking out the latest and greatest bands only to find out you can hum all of the chord changes before the first song finishes, then you need it immediately. Every time you think it's gonna zig, it zags. Every time you get lulled into some delicately picked melancholy, everything goes pear shaped. It is just lovely! As always, thanks for listening!!!Random Old Records Podcast #52Released 06/02/16DOWNLOAD HERE1. Donnie & Joe Emerson - "Good Time"(Dreamin' Wild, Light In The Attic 2012)2. What is it about certain bands' sounds that make them stand out? Is it luck? Timing? Some of that, but songwriting and sonic conviction is also key. Few indie rock acts over the past 15 years have had as strong a three-record showing to start a career as Real Estate. Martin Courtney is the primary songwriter and vocalist for the band. He joins the pod to discuss how the group formed, how he writes and approaches the band's sound, and how he stumbled into a solo record (which is good in its own right). Also, there's that name. Kind of a boring name, but the story on it dates back to a dinner with his parents.
