In this episode of Geeks Out, Tamzyn and Clayton take a look at the new 2026 film Killer Whale and ask the question: why are we still fascinated by movies where nature fights back? From Jaws to Orca to modern eco-thrillers, animal-revenge films have always tapped into our fear of the natural world — and our guilt about how we treat it. Killer Whale updates the idea for a modern audience, bringing bigger visuals, modern ocean cinematography, and a more contemporary take on the relationship between humans and marine life. But does the film deliver the tension and storytelling these movies need? And how does it compare to the strange emotional power of the 1977 cult classic Orca? We talk about:• The modern trend of eco-horror and nature-revenge stories• How whales have shifted from “monsters” to misunderstood intelligence• The science vs spectacle of killer whale behaviour• Whether modern creature films still capture the magic of classics Plus we ask the big question: are these films about fear… or about guilt? The post Killer Whale (2026) – Who’s the real enemy appeared first on Geeks OUT.
In this episode of Geeks Out, Clayton and Tamzyn dive into the cult classic Orca (1977) — the film that tried to ride the wave of the shark-movie boom after Jaws but ended up becoming something stranger and darker. Starring Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling, the film flips the usual monster-movie script. After a fisherman kills a pregnant orca, the surviving whale begins a calculated campaign of revenge against the humans responsible. Is Orca really a creature feature… or is it actually a tragedy about human arrogance and the intelligence of one of the ocean's most complex animals? We unpack the film's bizarre science, emotional whale drama, and surprisingly moral storyline — including the infamous baby-whale scene that shocked audiences in the 1970s. It's part monster movie, part ecological warning, and part “how did this get made?” cinema history. Expect discussion on:• Why Orca was marketed as the next Jaws• The surprisingly sympathetic killer whale• 1970s filmmaking choices and tone• Why the film has become a cult favourite A weird, emotional, and unexpectedly thoughtful entry in the “animals take revenge on humans” genre. Leather, longing and love that doesn't fit the mould. This week on Geeks Out, Tamzyn goes solo (with a little buzz by the fabulous ADZ) to review Pillion, the new romantic drama starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, directed by Harry Lighton and adapted from the novel Box Hill. Premiering at Cannes to strong critical response, Pillion explores vulnerability, power and identity within a queer biker subculture — not as spectacle, but as deeply human connection. Is it slow? Yes.Is it intimate? Absolutely. Is it for everyone? Probably not. But if you're open to expanding your mind and heart, this is a film worth sitting with. LISTEN NOW! The post Pillion – Love Outside the Mould appeared first on Geeks OUT.
In her Barbie heart song, Billie Eilish asks ‘What was I made for?’, and in this ep Clayton and Miranda talk about who queer media is made for? With the popularity of Heated Rivalry, a public debate has opened up about who the intended audience of the show is, going as far as to exclude gay men and other queer people from the conversation because they are not the intended audience. Cishet straight women have found male and male love and sex appealing in literature and even have become the authors of its existence. While it is great that some positive queer media has made headlines, there is still a conversation to be had. The post Who is Queer Media Made For? appeared first on Geeks OUT.
This week Tamzyn, Miranda and Clayton dive into Wonder Man, the latest entry into the ever-expanding Marvel TV universe. Tamzyn wasn't sold after the first two episodes. It felt slow. A little directionless. Not quite sure what it wanted to be. But then… it found its footing. In this episode: • The surprisingly endearing lead and co-lead dynamic• Why the early episodes feel unfocused• The origin story payoff — was it worth the wait?• The Doorman episode — fun detour or flow killer?• Marvel fatigue vs Marvel reinvention• Bingeing it in two blocks vs watching week to week• That ending — satisfying or just setting up Season 2?• And of course… what superpower would Tamzyn actually want? It's not top-tier Marvel. It's not a disaster either. It's somewhere in that interesting middle ground — and maybe that's okay.
Tamzyn, Clayton and Miranda dive into Dust Bunny, a visually stunning and quietly unsettling film starring Mads Mikkelsen. It's poetic. It's eerie. It's unexpectedly tender. And yes — we talk about the chicken with the lightbulb. In this episode: • That breathtaking cinematography• Mads Mikkelsen doing what he does best — intensity with restraint• The child performance that anchors the film• First-time director nerves or confident vision?• The symbolism layered through seemingly simple moments• Why it feels like a modern fairy tale for adults• Audience reactions — divided but intrigued• That ending and what it really means A slow burn that rewards patience… if you're willing to lean in.
Back in December, we sat down with the cast and director of Bev & Myrt to unpack what this gloriously queer stage show was all about. (click here after for that) Then we went to see it live as part of the Midsumma Festival season. There's something powerful about hearing artists speak about their intentions — the comedy, the vulnerability, the chaos — and then watching it unfold on stage in front of a real audience. Did it land the way they described?Did knowing the backstory change the experience? And how does queer theatre hit differently when it's live, intimate, and very Melbourne? In this episode: • Revisiting our December interview with the creatives behind Bev & Myrt• The live theatre energy — unpredictable, electric, communal• Performances that feel bigger (and braver) on stage• Queer storytelling at Midsumma and why it matters• What surprised us most once we saw it for ourselves• Did it live up to the promise? It's funny. It's heartfelt. It's a little chaotic in the best possible way. And it's exactly why we love covering local queer theatre on Geeks Out.
This week on Geeks Out, Tamzyn and Clayton unpack Send Help — the horror film critics seemed to love… but did it actually land? Tamzyn really wanted to love this one. Instead, she left feeling conflicted, uncomfortable, and not entirely sure who she was supposed to be rooting for. Is that clever storytelling… or a tonal misfire? In this episode: • Why critics praised its boldness and tension• The power dynamics between boss and employee• When feminist horror feels… murky• That uneasy “who do I like?” problem• The tonal tightrope between satire and psychological thriller• Did it subvert expectations — or just confuse them?• Why it left Tamzyn cold while others raved Sometimes a film works on paper but not in your gut. This one sparked debate.

As I was setting up the round of interviews that would be our first Women In Comics Feature to celebrate Women's History Month on the podcast, I wanted to get a variety of voices included to represent different facets of the medium. That lead me to reaching out to Barbra Dillon, Editor-In-Chief of Fanbase Press, a GLAAD Winning and Eisner and Harvey Nominated publisher and geek culture website. Who better than Barbra to cover the angle from both the vantage point of a small indy comics publisher as well as comics journalism. Two birds, one stone and I've been meaning to catch up with her since last Fall when their anthology Ripple Effects was crowdfunding which was of considerable interest to me as its focus is to increase awareness of and highlight people with incurable non-visible diseases like myself. I don't know of another comics journalism outlet that shares such a strongly aligned set of core values like Fanbase does so it was a pleasure to finally get a chance to catch up with her and chat about representation in the medium. Fanbase are celebrating their 15th Anniversary in 2025 and provide a range of unique and diverse programming to support creators in the medium. Please take a moment to check them out if you haven't already. Mission Statement Fanbase Press celebrates fandoms and creates new ones!
