This week, the boys pull up their dacks, lace up their blunnies, pull over their cardies, eat a bikkie, grab a tinny, and lob in for the Ridgy Didge himself, Baz Luhrmann's first feature film, “Strictly Ballroom”. This isn't any ear bashing- we loved it! It made us three happy little Vegemites. After Jeff gives a quick mini-review of “Mission: Impossible— The Final Reckoning”, our native Aussie and gutless wonder, Dave, knackered from a good hissy at his lappy, guides us through this absolute hooley dooley. Don't be a drongo- grab a coldie and listen- you'll be doing the bogo pogo in a jiff! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. The boys head to Japan this week to discuss Akira Kurosawa's “Yojimbo”. Starring Toshiro Mifune, the film is considered one of the most influential movies of all time. It's so influential that an entire series of westerns ripped it off so good they couldn't be released in the US for years due to threats of lawsuits. Anyway, this film is awesome, but did the boys think it stands up to the other Kurosawa greats? Grab a beer and tune in! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This week, we head to 1964 to discuss John Frankenheimer's “The Train,” a film that begs the question: How much do train mechanics know about art? The week on the show, we welcome back our music sponsor and artist in residence, DASEIN, using John's crap audio to discuss Spielberg's 2nd of 4 (at least) WWII epics, “Empire of The Sun.” The random year generator spun 1987, a year we visited to discuss Bertolucci's “The Last Emperor”, but we still gave you some set-up of what was happening around the world to add context to why in the hell two movies about empires set in China were two of the biggest movies of 1987. This week on the pod, Jeff gives a mini-review of “A Real Pain” starring writer-director Jesse Eisenberg and Oscar hopeful Kieran Culkin, John takes us back to “A Complete Unknown”, and Dave poops his pants having to re-watch another Ari Astor horror thriller as the boys discuss “Midsommar” as part of or random wheel generator series. This week on the pod, after the boys catch up, honor David Lynch, and give three mini-reviews, the boys discuss 1993's “True Romance”, the film that makes you ask, is Quentin Tarantino a better writer or director? Not that it really matters, of course, but Tony Scott directed this Tarantino/Avary script to cult superstardom. It's Dave's favorite QT film (maybe), and Jeff and John realize why they both liked it and think it could have been better to watch. Crazy! Mini-reviews are short, spoiler-free reactions to new films. This week we have “Nosferatu”, “A Complete Unknown”, and “The Brutalist”. Don't want to hear us talk to each other? No worries, ass! The best part about living in Portland Oregon is being surrounded by amazing and awesome comic creators. The town is sick with them, and they are wonderful people. It is even better when you are reviewing a book written by a fellow Portlander. Matt Fraction is an award winning, media content creator. Having worked in all of the big companies, Matt has written some fantastic books that have put him on the map. The 2012 Hawkeye series, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, Sex Criminals, Casanova, and of course Fantastic Four and FF. On top of all of that, Matt has also started to work in television. Starting as a creative consultant for the Hawkeye TV series and then as an executive producer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. A good guy who is creative, intelligent, and interesting. If you have not delved into the work that this creator has developed, I highly encourage you to take a chance and pick up his work. And, if you see him at a comic con, say hi. If you see him in the supermarket, leave the guy alone. He just wants some bagels. Check out our website at: https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2025/01/06/interview-with-matt-fraction/ We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. We open the episode with Dave's mini-review of “Kraven the Hunter”, discussing the state of movie studios, and a fun voicemail from some podcast friends. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This week, the boys rewatch “Sicario”, the Roger Deakins- I mean, Taylor Sheridan- I mean, Denis Villeneuve film that took 2015 by storm. The random year generator spun 2015, so we give you the context of the film year (5 Billion-dollar movies!), world events (Remember the FIFA scandal?), and then discuss what makes this film stand out above the rest of its peers. At the end of the episode, Jeff and John give their thoughts on Alfonso Cuaron's “Disclaimer” on AppleTV+. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. After the boys get through their mini-reviews, they discuss “Mrs. Miniver”, the 1942 Oscar-winning film that sold a whole lot of war bonds. Set outside London but filmed in the USA for obvious reasons, we discuss this William Wyler masterpiece and whether or not the propagating was too much! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he'd never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did Jeff land? I wonder if he liked it better than he likes subway poetry. This week, after John briefly discusses "Goodrich", the new Michael Keaton picture written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the boys take on another Hitchcock classic to highlight the film year 1959. Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. You'll have to listen to see if the boys think this film sits on the Mount Rushmore (get it?) of Hitchcock's classics. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. Is it coincidental that Nixon's public demise and unequivocal exoneration came the year Chinatown cites bureaucratic corruption??? Our phone number is 646-484-9298. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Joker: Folie a Deux, the long awaited and much discussed follow up to 2019's surprise hit Joker, finally hit theaters last weekend and the numbers across the board, critically and financially, leave something to be desired. The $200 million-budgeted, psychological thriller/musical/courtroom drama sequel debuted to just $37 million domestically, a soft bow certainly impacted by poor critical reviews and a D CinemaScore from audiences – a record worst for the comic book film genre. While promoting his new film We Live In Time via an interview with Esquire, Andrew Garfield spoke on his willingness to reprise his role as The Amazing Spider-Man, saying quote, “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it's additive to the culture, if there's a great concept or something that hasn't been done before that's unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I'm joyful in return.” Last week The Hollywood Reporter released an editorial analysis of the state of the Star Wars franchise after being bought by Disney 12 years ago. The report crunched and discussed numbers including budgets, revenues, critical and audience reviews, viewership, and streaming subscriptions, among other verticals for all the projects beginning with The Force Awakens through The Acolyte. The latest buzz from the rumor mill via The Production List, Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena appears to be attached to Marvel Studios Nova series. While it's still far from official casting, if true, the move could have implications for Jaime Reyes' as-of-yet unclear future in James Gunn's DCU. Spyglass has set the release date for Scream VII as Feb 27, 2026, with Neve Campbell officially reprising her role and franchise creator Kevin Williamson returning as director. Paramount is developing a live-action/CG Rugrats film, directed by Jason Moore of Pitch Perfect, with a script by SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney has confirmed that the show will be shooting a crossover episode with the cast of Abbott Elementary, which also takes place in Philadelphia. James Hawes, an established TV creator who most recently directed a string of episodes of the Gary Oldman spy series Slow Horses, has been tapped to helm the first two episodes of Lanterns for Max. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Katy O'Brian, the rising actress who gained notice with Love Lies Bleeding, is joining Glen Powell in The Running Man, Paramount's adaptation of the Stephen King novel Will Smith is set to reunite with director Michael Bay for the first time in 30 years for a new Netflix action movie titled Fast and Loose. The film follows a man who wakes up in Mexico with no memory and discovers he has been living a double life as both a CIA agent and a crime lord. Netflix has canceled the Jeff Goldblum led series Kaos after one season. Prey star Amber Midthunder has joined the second season of AppleTV+'s monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The Mindy Kaling-led animated Scooby Doo spin off Velma has been canceled by Max after two seasons. Insider Jeff Sneider is adding another name to the list of potential actors to play John Stewart in the upcoming DC series Lanterns, reporting that 21 Bridges actor Stephen James has emerged as the front runner. Christopher Nolan's next film with Universal now has a release date of July 17th, 2026 with Matt Damon in early talks to star.
Two of the three dive into this high drama from the early 2000's. Jeff is away but somehow still appears in the episode and doesn't sound the least bit like he's broadcasting from a phone in a toilet cubicle in Times Square (Don't try and find them, they don't exist) thanks to our AI audio algorithm knowing what he sounds like and his volume level. We discuss acting performances, daring editing choices and the cinematography of the film, and have a lengthy extra discussion about how streaming "TV show" budgets are out of control. 00:00:00 - Intro 00:06:37 - Mini Review The Outrun 00:10:10 - Gripes 00:18:09 - 2003 Year in Review 00:32:02 - Films of 2003: 21 Grams 01:10:27 - What You Been Watching? 01:16:07 - Next Episode Additional Cast/Crew: Alejandro G. The boys get romantic in 1955 NYC, where a simple middle-aged 34-year-old butcher named Marty caves to societal pressures and calls up a lady. We discuss! The random year generator spun in 1955, and we decided to delve into Paddy Chayefsky's pen when he wrote “Marty”, the Oscar and Palme D'Or-winning 90-minute slice of dramatic life film starring with Ernest Borgnine in his Academy Award-winning performance. Dave is Australian, so he was drinking Fosters, and John gave us a mini-review of Alien: Romulus-going, now that his Covid passed his 5-day window. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. We're concluding our two-parter on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters! It's time to see if this whole 10-hour journey was worth the destination. This one covers episodes 6-10. Joanna's friend Prad is back in place of Sam as we repeatedly forget what we talked about last time and lightly applaud for working actors. Are there enough monsters to keep us happy? Are there enough monsters to keep YOU happy? Does anyone read these descriptions? Next episode is- yes- the first part of our two-part finale. This week, the boys head back to 2012 to discuss “The Hunt”, the Thomas Vinterberg - Mads Mikkelsen film nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. After we take our ritualistic pre-show shot of whiskey, we discuss major films & film news from 2012, movies we've previously discussed, movies that inspire us, and share some world events from 2012. We then get into an open conversation about the nuance and film techniques used to pull off this challenging yet thrilling work. Check out our socials! The boys head back to 1945 England, where not much was happening (just kidding), to watch David Lean's 'Brief Encounter' as part of our Random Year Generator series. David Lean's first three films, including this one, were all Noël Coward adaptations! Didn't expect that from the guy who gave us 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. We're a drinking podcast trying to keep it positive, but somehow, Dave got buzzed over 25 times talking about this romantic drama rated the #2 Greatest British Film of all time by the British Film Institute! The boys head to 1995 to discuss ‘Leaving Las Vegas', Nicolas Cage's Oscar-winning role, and whether or not there can be such a thing as too much jazz scatting in a film score. We set the scene, give you some context of world and film news from 1995, and sink our teeth into a productive conversation about this emotional film about an alcoholic (Cage) and his prostitute friend, Elizabeth Shue. This week, the boys watch ‘Double Indemnity,' the incredible Billy Wilder film based on the crime novella of the same name, which is also based on a true story! Since the co-hosts don't have solid life insurance policies, we can rest easy knowing our spouses can't try that crap on us. Don't even think about it, Diamond!
