The Enterprise is on a desperate mission to the planet Ardana to secure the consignment of a rare substance called Zenite, which is the only antidote to a botanical plaque that is threatening all life on the planet Merak II. But the promised delivery of the Zenite is delayed when Captain Kirk gets caught in the middle of a class struggle between the allegedly "inferior" cave-dwelling Troglyte miners and the so-called "superior" intellectual society that inhabits the cloud city of Stratos. With time running out, Captain Kirk takes matters into his own hands, which threatens to further the divide between the Troglytes and the Stratos city dwellers, which in effect will threaten to destroy all life on Merak II. "The Cloud Minders" may not represent "Star Trek" at its best, but at this point so late in the 3rd Season -- not to mention so close to the end of the series -- it comes close enough. It's an ambitious episode that features a strong message, notable production values and stellar performances, all of which make "The Cloud Minders" represent a return to form to the values and standards that made "Star Trek" so great in the first place. Following our deep dive of "The Cloud Minders," we're honored to once again be joined for very special interview by writer David Gerrold! In addition to writing the story for "The Cloud Minders," he is perhaps best known in "Star Trek" history for writing its most popular episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles." Gerrold is also the recipient of the 2022 Robert A. Heinlein Award, honoring a lifetime of outstanding achievements in science fiction writing. Time for another episode of the podcast, and this time we delve into our favourite sci-fi artificial intelligences. We largely ignore ambulatory A.I., so you won't find much talk of robots or androids here. Instead we try (but don't always succeed) to discuss the type of A.I. that won't chase you down a corridor or strangle you. Among the works mentioned are some Star Treks; some Keith Laumer, Asimov, Clarke and Gerrold; and several classic movies that highlight our human terror at the thought that computers might one day take over. Read more about science fiction's use of artificial intelligence in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction. Sürgősségi vészjelzéssel riasztja a K-7 űrállomásra Kirk kapitány legénységét a Föderáció mezőgazdasági megbízottja, hogy az Enterprise erőforrásaival őriztesse az állomáson tárolt gabonát. Míg Kirk a riadó miatt neheztel a feletteseire, egy simlis kereskedő agresszíven nyomuló seftelése kontrollálhatatlan tribbliszaporulatot eredményez az Enterprise és az állomás fedélzetén, miközben a kikapcsolódni vágyó klingon látogatók is feszültséget és kocsmai zavargásokat gerjesztenek. Aktuális adásunk témája a ’Szőrös veszedelem’ című epizód. Rövid hírszekció: • A Voyager 25. évfordulójára keményfedeles könyv és Janeway életrajz érkezik. Hogyan képzeljük el a sorozat méltó megünneplését? • Kitekintésképpen a The Mandalorian előzeteséről is beszélgetünk: a sorozat új lehetőségeket nyit meg Star Wars a franchise számára? • A Ronald D. Moore nevével fémjelzett űrversenyes sci-fi sorozat, a For All Mankind első 3 része már megtekinthető. Roddenberry maga is komolyabb irányba szerette volna terelni a franchise-t.

In this episode, author & editor Robert J. Sawyer tells us about getting an early start in adult-level science fiction reading books by David Gerrold and Isaac Asimov. He'll talk about why the original Star Trek was such a great TV series, and share his opinions about how science fiction has evolved and sometimes taken steps backward over the years. We'll also chat with Rob about how well old sf novels hold up, specifically some of the works of Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Reflecting on his own writing, Rob will tell us about what he learned from interviewing some of the giants in the field back in the 1980s, how he's tried to synthesize the approaches of Larry Niven and Mike Resnick, and his reputation for being an optimist. He'll also give us some hints about what to expect from his newest novel, Quantum Night. Our interview took place in August 2015 at Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention in Spokane, Washington. Find out more about Rob and his works at: sfwriter.com
Quality, not quantity! This week's episode is short and... well, not so sweet, actually, since Travis witnessed basically the worst thing ever awhile back. Nonetheless, he, Mark and Jeff also talk about plenty of geeky and nerdy things to balance it out, including all the new Star Wars toys; the search for extraterrestrial intelligence; Dan Harmon and his work (including Harmontown, Community, and Rick and Morty); and the new Hulu Plus plan. There's also a startling revelation towards the end: Travis would, quite literally, screw himself. We want to hear from you - give us your feedback and maybe we’ll give you a shout-out on the show! Visit us at facebook.com/boycowradio; or on Twitter: @BoyCowRadio! Co-hosted by Travis Richey (@TheTravisRichey) and Mark W. Gray (@RocketPictures). Produced by Jeffrey Gardner (@jeffaplus).

The first of these was nominated for a Hugo Award in the category "Best Dramatic Presentation", which he shared with Joseph Pevney. He provided the story, along with Oliver Crawford, for TOS: "The Cloud Minders". He also provided an uncredited rewrite of the final draft of the script for TOS: "I, Mudd". Peace Talks Radio, the series on peacemaking and nonviolent conflict resolution, explores the peace message in the hugely popular original 1960's TV series - STAR TREK. A new Star Trek movie was released in May 2009 that revisits the stories of Capt. Kirk, Spock, Bones and the characters from the original series. This episode ot Peace Talks Radio notes how many stories in the original series thoughtfully explored the themes of war and peace, tolerance, friendship and compassion. When originally released in the turbulent late 1960's, Star Trek stories tackled complex issues that mirrored both the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Struggle. Host Paul Ingles talks with Dr. Judith Barad, author of The Ethics of Star Trek and David Gerrold, author of The World of Star Trek and the popular episode "The Trouble With Tribbles." Also, Nichelle Nichols, the actress who played Lt. Uhura, the communications officer, in the original series.
