"Under the watchful eyes of Bob's Stratos and Apollo..."How do you go from being dubbed "the merchant of death" to the patron saint of human achievement? In this episode of Elton Reads A Book A Week, I explore the paradoxical life of Alfred Nobel—the man who invented dynamite and then panic-bought his way into history's good graces with a massive pile of prize money. We're diving deep into the explosive history of the Nobel Prize, from the accidental obituary that kickstarted the whole thing to the institutional dramas, bizarre omissions, and downright weird rules that keep the selection committees busy. Whether it's why there's no Nobel for math, the controversy over the Economics prize, or the fact that some laureates have actually been dead when they won, we're unpacking it all.Join me as we dissect the Nobel legacy: a Victorian-era PR masterclass that managed to turn a career in arms dealing into the world's most prestigious honor. Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary has been making the media rounds defending the 40,000-acre data center project he's backing in northern Utah. Dismissing residents' concerns over the environmental impacts and water demands of the proposed project in the drought-stricken Great Salt Lake region, O'Leary has claimed protesters are “bused in,” “misinformed,” and alleged that China has had a hand in orchestrating the public push back.“The Stratos project in Utah is an example of data center largesse,” says Jim Walsh, the policy director of Food and Water Watch, an organization leading a campaign to stop the rapid development of data centers across the country. As proposed, the project would be more than double the size of Manhattan. Walsh adds, “It's important to recognize that the impacts of this data center go beyond the water and energy concerns that impact the residents of Salt Lake. They're going to be pulling gas from the Ruby Pipeline, and this project is going to perpetuate more fracking in the Western U.S., a practice for extracting natural gas that uses extreme amounts of water.”This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Jordan Uhl speaks to Walsh about the massive Utah project, the environmental and economic impact of data centers on communities especially where water is already scarce, and the Trump administration's push to cut regulations at the federal and local level to accelerate the build-out of data centers and AI infrastructure. In response to O'Leary claiming data center development is a national security priority to beat out China in the AI race, Walsh says, “National security isn't just about having technological and military superiority.” We're not safe if we don't have clean air and clean water to drink and breathe. We're not safe if our communities have massive data centers that are extracting our natural resources. Our entire economy functions on access to water.”For more, listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. Opposition to the Stratos Data Center in Box Elder County continues to grow, with many concerned about environmental impacts. Hundreds spent part of their long holiday weekend protesting the center, taking to the steps of the state capitol. In addition to environmental and energy concerns, complaints about the process and alleged lack of transparency continue to infuriate many Utahns. Former investigative reporter Debbie Dujanovic has been digging into the questions posed by so many Utahns.

The mid-market is where tech decisions get dangerous. You are big enough that uptime, security, and delivery speed matter every day, but you are not big enough to burn cash on massive consulting retainers or absorb the fallout from a shaky vendor. That “valley in the middle” is exactly where David Robinson lives, and it is why he built Stratos Development Group to offer right-fit technical leadership, managed services, and software development that feels structured without being out of reach. We walk through David's journey from building early electronic medical record software in healthcare to leading engineering at a venture-backed startup, and then into entrepreneurship. From there, we get practical about what mid-market teams actually struggle with: competitors using the same licensed infrastructure, product roadmaps hijacked by one or two big customers, and the need to own real intellectual property and architecture to keep a competitive edge. For payments, fintech, and ISO leaders, the conversation goes deep on what Stratos is seeing right now: consolidation, tougher differentiation, and the technical friction that can make or break net-new deals. David shares how ISOs can approach technology enablement and custom integrations, plus the bigger opportunity of moving from ISO to ISV. If you already have a book of business, you also have a built-in feedback loop, faster validation, and a clearer path to launching software that your clients will actually pay for. We also tackle AI and the “vibe coding” era, including why agentic development can boost productivity but cannot shortcut PCI, SOC, or HIPAA compliance. If you want to modernize safely and win in a more competitive market, this one is for you.

The Stratos Project, a massive data center planned for Box Elder County, has run up against equally massive public opposition, even as state officials champion its benefits. A panel of local journalists joins us to help make sense of the debate.
Today we're looking at a situation in northern Utah that has echoes of something very familiar to us in Colorado Springs.O'Leary Ventures is backing a massive hyperscale data center initiative in Box Elder County, Utah. The Stratos project area has been approved at the state level through MIDA, the Military Installation Development Authority, and the county commission has approved the interlocal agreement and consent resolution required for the project area to move forward. But now residents are organizing a referendum. They want to gather signatures, force the question onto a ballot, and potentially overturn the county commission's action. So the question is simple. Can a local special election overturn something that has already been approved by multiple layers of government?-------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

To mitigate climate change, we must reduce new emissions. But what about the greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere? And what about the emissions that we can't easily reduce with existing technologies? In this episode, James and Daisy discuss carbon dioxide removal (CDR). How is it done? What does it cost? And do we really need it?SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: The State of CDR – Reports on the state of progress. Nearly 2.1 billion tonnes of CO₂ are already being removed annually, but around 7–9 billion tonnes are needed by mid-century.CDR.fyi – Provides trusted insights and analytics on durable CDR orders, projects, and financings across the carbon removal market.Counteract – Backs early-stage founders fostering innovation in carbon removal. OTHER ADVOCATES AND RESOURCES:IPCC – CDR refers to technologies, practices, and approaches that remove and durably store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It only refers to human activities that intentionally remove CO2 (not natural CO2 removal such as natural forest growth). RMI (2023) – CDR approaches can be sorted into three categories: (1) Biogenic CDR (plants); (2) Geochemical CDR (minerals); and (3) Synthetic CDR (energy). WRI (2026) – Outlines six carbon removal methods. Note: carbon removal is different from carbon capture and storage (CCS), which captures emissions at the source (a form of emission reduction).RMI (2024) – Five charts showing how much CO2 we need to remove from the atmosphere. CDR.fyi (2026) – Approximately $3.6B in private capital was invested in CDR companies between 2021 and 2025, with Direct Air Capture (DAC) accounting for ~61%.Climeworks – A Swiss company specialising in DAC and storage (DACCS) technology. 1PointFive – Once operational, the STRATOS facility in Texas aims to capture up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.XPRIZE – The XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition is a $100 million global challenge intended to accelerate scalable solutions for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The 2025 winner was Mati Carbon, who use enhanced rock weathering – spreading crushed basalt on smallholder farms in India – to lock CO₂ as bicarbonate for millennia while enhancing soils and boosting crop yields.BCG (2025) – Smallholder farmers in India that work with enhanced rock weathering providers have seen ~20%–30% higher yields and ~30% lower fertilizer use, resulting in nearly 20%–25% higher household incomes. ESG Today (2026) – Microsoft signed agreements to remove 45 million metric tonnes of CO2 in 2025. By comparison, Frontier Buyers coalition (the second largest purchaser) has purchased around 1.8 million tonnes to date. Microsoft has confirmed that their carbon removal program has not ended but that at times they may “adjust the pace or volume” of procurement. Frontier Climate – An advance market commitment to buy an initial $1B+ of permanent carbon removal between 2022 and 2030. It was founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, McKinsey and tens of thousands of businesses using Stripe Climate.Responsible Investor (2025) – SBTi allows high quality removals to be used for residual emissions (capped at 10% of total emissions).Interface – Created the first-ever carbon negative carpet tile. "Under the watchful eyes of Bob's Stratos and Apollo..."This week Elton is asking the big questions: What do you do when the world ends, not with a bang, but with a sudden, awkward silence? In this special crossover event, Elton is joined by the one and only Glen Nuzzle from the Nuzzle House podcast to unpack Jonathan Lethem's post-technological fever dream, The Arrest.Imagine the "Off" switch for the entire world was flipped. No internet, no cars, no planes—just a sudden, quiet return to a pastoral life. This is the world of Sandy “Journeyman” Duplessis, a former Hollywood script doctor now living a humble life in rural Maine, delivering organic rutabagas and trying to forget his past. But the past has a way of showing up in a nuclear-powered, drill-nosed super-machine.When Sandy's old frenemy, the legendary (and legendarily ego-maniacal) producer Peter Todbaum, rolls into town in the "Blue Streak," he brings more than just forbidden technology—he brings the toxic baggage of Hollywood storytelling to a world that was finally learning to live without it.The Ultimate Rivalry: We dive into the petty, hilarious tension between a man who just wants to garden and a man who refuses to stop being the protagonist.Post-Apocalypse... with Vibes: Is it a dystopia, or just a really long camping trip? Lethem flips the script on traditional "end of the world" tropes.A "Nuzzle" Worthy Discussion: Glen Nuzzle brings his signature style to the table, helping Elton navigate the surreal landscapes and meta-commentary that only Lethem can provide."It's a story about the stories we tell ourselves to survive, and what happens when those stories are delivered by a man in a giant metal mole-car."Whether you're a fan of high-concept literary sci-fi or you just enjoy hearing two guys talk about the absurdity of a nuclear-powered drill in a potato field, this episode is for you.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! They say that author Chrysoula Georgoula has written a pitch-perfect portrayal of the male psyche, of a certain kind of Greek male, often with brutal authenticity. We find out what inspired her, and why 'Call Me Stratos' is not just a good read, it is a vivid portrayal of some of the most important aspects of Greek society.
Max talks with Tom Turner, Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation, about an extraordinary initiative to preserve the operational future of the iconic V-tail Bonanza aircraft. When Textron Aviation quietly stopped producing the magnesium ruddervator skins—a unique flight control surface used only on V-tail Bonanzas—it left over 5,000 aircraft potentially grounded due to a lack of repair parts. Even minor damage could make these aircraft unrepairable. To solve this crisis, the ABS Air Safety Foundation awarded the $500,000 Maciel Ruddervator Prize to SRS Aviation of Minnesota. Tom explains the history and challenges behind the ruddervator issue: the original parts were made from a now-obsolete thickness of magnesium, which is no longer commonly produced. Even worse, the chemical process used to harden the magnesium is so caustic and environmentally hazardous that almost no facility could perform it anymore. SRS Aviation, already experienced in building replacement aluminum control surfaces, initially declined to compete. But after realizing no one else was pursuing a solution, they took on the challenge, developing their own safe and FAA-acceptable hardening process. They eventually met the prize's requirements, which included certifying replacement skins for all three ruddervator design variants and producing at least 100 completed kits to prove production viability. Tom also discusses the origin of the prize money: a generous bequest from Manny Maciel, a quiet aircraft fueler in Santa Rosa, California, who left $5 million to aviation safety research. The ABS Air Safety Foundation received $1 million of this funding, which it used to underwrite the prize. Tom emphasizes that the Foundation structured the award not just to incentivize a solution, but to ensure long-term support for V-tail Bonanza owners. The story also touches on how the ruddervator issue impacted aircraft valuations and even insurance policies—some insurers were unwilling to total aircraft with ruddervator damage, knowing repairs were impossible. Tom notes that after the prize was announced, Textron resumed limited production of the original ruddervator skins, showing how serious ABS was about finding a solution. Max wraps up by asking what other challenges might face Bonanza owners. Tom replies that while issues will always arise, most are solvable. The ruddervator shortage, however, was unique—it was an existential threat. Thanks to SRS Aviation and the support of the aviation community, that threat has now been eliminated. Vamos a ver unos cuantos… 1. BMW 3.0 CSL (1972). 3. Chevrolet Corvette Greenwood (1976).

Jason and Derek drive and discuss the legendary Lancia Stratos – its origins, its parts-bin interior, and its unhinged handling. === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === On today's episode, things start off by looking at commenters' nominations for elegant mid-engine cars. Most are promptly rejected, but a handful give the Carmudgeons pause: the De Tomaso P72, McLaren Speedtail, Jaguar XJ220, Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, and Ferrari 296. And two previously overlooked but notably elegant exceptions are: the Ferrari 246 Dino and the first-generation Toyota Previa. Afterwards, it's all things Stratos – starting with Jason's and Derek's driving impressions. They discuss the handling characteristics of this mind-bendingly miniature, Ferrari-engined, rally missile. Thanks to its short, upward-swept overhangs and relatively massive suspension travel, it can traverse rough terrain with ease (including massive potholes and steep driveways), setting it apart from your average sports car experience. But, like a fighter jet, it sacrifices stability in favor of maximum maneuverability. They also cover its diminutive size (the Stratos is 2 feet shorter than a Mk8 VW Golf!) and its parts-bin interior – including the trunk release it shares with the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari 308 GT4, exterior door handle from the Fiat X1/9, and interior door pull from the Miura (among others). Not to mention its paper-thin fiberglass “firewall,” and very unique hinged side windows. Later on, discussions move to the origins of the car. From the philandering nature of mid-century Italian design houses like Pininfarina and Bertone, which seemed to take turns designing Italy's newest models at the time. Things like the Fiat Dino Coupe and Spider, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and Sprint Speciale (not to mention the wild Stratos Zero concept by Marcello Gandini that became the wedge-shaped Stratos) – plus the dubious last-second rally homologation of the Stratos. Lancia's little wedge would go on to race all across the world; from the Acropolis Rally in Greece, to the East African Safari Rally in Kenya, to the Press-on-Regardless Rally in Michigan. The Stratos, which replaced Lancia's too-fragile Fulvia, would prove itself plenty rugged and become a wildly successful rally car (but a total sales flop). Lancia's parent company, Fiat, wanted it out in favor of its new 131, but the Stratos' WRC wins continued thanks to privateers all the way up until the 1980s, when it was finally replaced by the 037. The Stratos Stradale, a car you could buy 50 years ago for the price of a mildly-luxurious contemporary GT like the Alfa Romeo Montreal – now goes for several hundreds of thousands of dollars. Probably one of the highest dollar-per-sq/ft ratios in the automotive world – start saving! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, we talk to Anna Stukas, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at 1PointFive, who shares insights into how direct air capture (DAC) technology works and its crucial role in aviation's journey to net zero. Stukas, who has been working in carbon capture since 2015, discusses her role in commercialising DAC technology and developing strategic partnerships to scale this critical climate solution.Stukas discusses:The fundamental role of DAC in climate action, explaining how it captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere through an engineered system that mimics natural processes but operates more efficiently and with a smaller land footprint than trees. The scalability of DAC technology, exemplified by the STRATOS facility in Texas which, once completed, will capture up to 500,000 tons of CO2 annually. The critical importance of industry partnerships, including Airbus's pre-purchase of 400,000 tons of carbon removal and subsequent agreements with airlines like easyJet, Air Canada, and Lufthansa; as well as Microsoft's landmark 500,000 metric tons purchase agreement. The secure storage of captured CO2 deep underground, where it mineralises into calcium carbonate over geological timescales. The integration with renewable energy infrastructure, with facilities like STRATOS being powered by adjacent solar installations, creating additional opportunities for clean energy development. The complementary relationship between DAC and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with DAC addressing residual emissions while potentially serving as a future feedstock for SAF production.Throughout the conversation, Stukas emphasises that while DAC is not a “get-out-of-jail-free card”, it represents an essential tool in aviation's decarbonisation toolkit.
