How about another in-depth, deep-diving, evergreen conversation about creative writing, finding success as we each define it, and staying healthy and sane in the process? In Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick 093, I speak with transcendental horror author and speculative poet Darius Jones. Our conversation covers the deeper, emotionally resonant value of horror and "weird" fiction, how Darius fills the "fiction-shaped void" in his soul, why the pandemic and a pair of astronomy binoculars led to publishing fantastical epic poetry, the value of rejection, the importance of meditation and stoicism, and...yep, a whole heck of a lot more. The conversation with Darius Jones was recorded on May 24th, 2023. The rest of this episode was recorded on August 23, 2023. About Darius Jones Darius Jones writes cosmic horror, weird fiction, dark fantasy -- or, taken together and as he likes to call it, transcendental horror, as well as speculative poetry and sometimes historical fiction. His stories and poems have appeared in Strange Horizons, The No Sleep Podcast, Starline Magazine, and elsewhere. He is a member of the Horror Writers Association, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. This week we wrap up our Contemporary Utopian Fiction series by discussing all the ways they are impossible. Impossible to take seriously. Impossible fits for the postmodern world. Impossible to dramatize in fiction. In this wide-ranging conversation we touch on Asimov, Thomas More, Paradise Lost, Camelot, and Eyad even spoils The Good Place for you (be forewarned!). For this series we read and discussed Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. Next week we will begin our new series on Novels in Stories by reviewing Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad. Colin and Phil recently found themselves reviewing Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama (1973) on another podcast - and were intrigued by a quote from author Mike Resnick, who said that James White's All Judgement Fled (1968) was "Rama done right". What is this other book, and why would one repsected author (Resnick) suggest that another respected author (White) had bested yet another respected author (Clarke)? We decided to investigate - and in this episode of Science Fiction 101 we tell you everything we learned. All Judgment Fled was first published in serialised form in the science fiction magazine Worlds of IF, edited by Fred Pohl, in 1967/8. IF was a sister magazine to Galaxy Science Fiction. Also in this episode: Clarkesworld publisher Neil Clarke responds to our review of his magazine! a science fiction character quiz Brandon Sanderson's record-breaking Kickstarter campaign Alfred Hitchcock's unfilmed science fiction movie We hope you enjoy the episode! This week we dive into the central theme of the book-- anarchism-- and discuss whether or not it is still relevant 50 years after the publication of The Dispossessed. What does Le Guin have to say about anarchism? Is it specific to a particular school of anarchism? 1:05 What are the new forms of power explored in the book? 27:05 Is Shevek's research into the nature of time anarchist in any sense? 35:50 Kim Stanley Robinson says his and Le Guin's forms of leftist politics are different, but the differences don't matter. If they don't matter now, when do they matter? 43:10 For this series we read and discussed Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. The Dispossessed describes a radical political ideology but are there any aspects of this book that are, in fact, not radical? This week we look at this book from the point of view of linguistics, sexual politics and more. What is the novel saying about sexuality and the nuclear family? Is the novel taking a radical position? 1:35 Can a civilization be shaped by its language? Was Le Guin's application of this idea believable? 19:15 Is The Dispossessed trying to be radical? 34:33 For this series we will read and discuss Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. This week we review a classic of philosophical science fiction: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin. Why read The Dispossessed? 1:05 Are the Anarres chapters boring? 4:20 Is this an example of the best science fiction can offer? 9:55 Is Le Guin's philosophical discussion too earnest? 17:35 Is this book still relevant? 21:00 For this series we will read and discuss Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. Eyad leads this episode's discussion as we finish up our examinations of Resnick's utopian story cycle Kirinyaga. Does this book say anything about postcolonial African politics? (1:00) Why do readers feel upset when white writers write about black subject matter? (8:45) Are Western writers unable to represent other cultures in fiction? (22:15) For this series we will read and discuss Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. This is week 2 of our discussion on Resnick's Kirinyaga. Ostensibly this collection is a fable but perhaps it shouldn't be labeled as such? And hey does this book remind anyone of our contemporary political landscape? These questions (and more!) as we talk about the problems in this work of utopian sci-fi. For this series we will read and discuss Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. Kirinyaga by Mike Resnick is an odd little book. It's about post-colonial Africa and the future of the Kikuyu, an ethnic group native to Kenya-- but it's written by a white man from the Midwest. The stories were published separately, but this book was sold as a linked collection. And is this really about utopias? This week we review one of the most awarded science fiction collections ever (if you don't believe this, Resnick will set you straight) and try to figure out if it's worth our time and yours. For this series we will read and discuss Toni Morrison's Paradise Jan 14-28, Mike Resnick's Kirinyaga Feb 4-18, and Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed Feb 25 - Mar 11. This week we discuss Fox News' favorite bogeyman du jour, Critical Race Theory, and how it pertains to this novel. What does Critical Race Theory have to do with utopias? What is Morrison saying about ideological fixity? There are some spoilers in this episode, so if you haven't finished the book yet, check out our spoiler-free discussion in our review. We're continuing our analysis of Toni Morrison's 1998 novel Paradise by examining some of the religious and magical aspects of the novel. The way Morrison uses the supernatural in her work has always vexed Sam, so tune in to see if you can help him figure out the ending of this novel. Due to a scrivener’s error in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), Qualified Improvement Property ("QIP") was not designated as property with a useful life of 20 years or less, thus failing to qualify for the 100% bonus depreciation allowed in the TCJA. The CARES Act corrected this error retroactive to the TCJA enactment. Now that it’s been corrected, taxpayers must consider how to capture lost bonus depreciation.Last week, the IRS released Rev. Proc. 2020-25, which sets forth the procedures for taxpayers seeking to implement the CARES Act’s Technical Correction for QIP. The revenue procedure allows a range of alternatives addressing elections, amended returns, and accounting method changes. Eversheds Sutherland attorneys, Ellen McElroy and Mike Resnick will discuss these new rules with the author of the revenue procedure, Kathleen Reed, Branch Chief, Office of Chief Counsel (IRS), Income Tax & Accounting.
When Mike Resnick passed away on January 9th, Rish and Big knew they had to make one of his stories their next episode. Years ago, he'd sent them out a huge batch of Catastrophe Baker stories so that they could continue the series on the show. What better way to remember him than to put one of his creations out for fans to enjoy? Catastrophe Baker makes a trip to Silverstrike and while he's there, he attends a carnival. It's pretty ho-hum until he gets summoned to the tent of the Siren of Silverstrike to see the show that everyone is talking about. Afterward, Rish and Big talk about Mike Resnick and what he has meant to the science fiction community, the podcast community, and the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine. We'll miss you, Mike.
This podcast collects three stories by Mike Resnick which appeared in Future SF over the course of 2019: A Typical Tale of Bloodlust and Conquest (issue 4)The Token (issue 2)Perfection (issue 1) Our goal is twofold: to honor Mike and his writing, but also to raise awareness of the GoFundMe campaign his family is running to pay off his remaining medical bills....

In this episode, author & editor Robert J. Sawyer tells us about getting an early start in adult-level science fiction reading books by David Gerrold and Isaac Asimov. He'll talk about why the original Star Trek was such a great TV series, and share his opinions about how science fiction has evolved and sometimes taken steps backward over the years. We'll also chat with Rob about how well old sf novels hold up, specifically some of the works of Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Reflecting on his own writing, Rob will tell us about what he learned from interviewing some of the giants in the field back in the 1980s, how he's tried to synthesize the approaches of Larry Niven and Mike Resnick, and his reputation for being an optimist. He'll also give us some hints about what to expect from his newest novel, Quantum Night. Our interview took place in August 2015 at Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention in Spokane, Washington. Find out more about Rob and his works at: sfwriter.com
Dungeon Crawlers Radio had the oppertunity to sit down with Writers of the Future winner Kary English. We talked to her about Writers of the Future, her Hugo nomination, writing, and so much more! Kary English grew up in the snowy Midwest where she avoided siblings and frostbite by reading book after book in a warm corner behind a recliner chair. She blames her one and only high school detention on Douglas Adams, whose Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy caused her to laugh out loud while reading it behind her geometry textbook. Today, Kary still spends most of her time with her head in the clouds and her nose in a book. To the great relief of her parents, she seems to be making a living at it. Her fiction includes several short stories, a planetary fantasy novel forthcoming in late 2015, and a fantasy saga about a little girl and an orange kitten. A student of New York Times bestsellers David Farland and Tracy Hickman, Kary aspires to make her own work detention-worthy. Kary is a Writers of the Future winner whose fiction has appeared in the Grantville Gazette, Daily Science Fiction, and Mike Resnick’s Galaxy’s Edge. Dungeon Crawlers Radio is an exciting and unique Live geek radioshow that focuses on gaming, comics, fantasy & Sci-fi Books, and many more aspects of the world of Geek. First Story: “The New Deal” by Trent Jamieson “You hear about the new Deal?” Jacobi asked, crouching down by the nearest body on the flat corrugated iron roof. Ulmer shrugged. “Just rumours, nothing definite. Last one wasn’t so good. These two aren’t going to benefit.” He took a step back from the bodies, careful to stay on the line of nails marking the beam beneath, the roof was rusty; it creaked with his movement. Jacobi grinned and brushed flies from his cracked lips. “These blokes been dead a while.” SF writer and Silent Motion Picture Actor, Trent Jamieson should be 111 years old, but is only 41 on account of TEMPORAL RADIATION. He lives in Brisbane with his wife, Diana, where he wrote the Death Works Trilogy published by Orbit Books. He is the author of the Death Works Series. They’re about Death – you know, the Grim... Coming up… Main Fiction: “Ray of Light” by Brad Torgersen My crew boss Jake was waiting for me at the sealock door. I’d been eight hours outside, checking for microfractures in the metal hull. Tedious work, that. I’d turned my helmet communicator off so as not to be distracted. The look on Jake’s face spooked me. “What’s happened?” I asked him, seawater dripping from the hair of my beard. ”Jenna,” was all I got in reply. Which was enough. Brad R. Torgersen is a healthcare computer geek by day, a United States Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer on the weekend, and a speculative fiction writer by night. [2] Many online magazines now pay professional rates--sometimes much better than print magazines--does this mean the great electronic experiment was a success? Or just that the print magazines are dieing? Mike Resnick (editor of the highest paying online magazine) discusses this and provides another eyewitness report on how bad things really are across Africa. He also answers your host's question about Funny Novels: is there more money but less respect? [3] Walt (the Bananaslug) Boyes and Stoney Compton take us inside Jim Baen's Universe magazine. [4] Must a generation die off for a culture to change its most deeply held beliefs? Or is our current population somehow learning to become comfortable with nontraditional ideas, behaviors, clothing and lifestyles? Elizabeth Bear speaks of this and the universal notion of Us verses Them. [5] Have we been relying on non-lethal weapons for centuries without even realizing it? Kim Stanley Robinson insists that we have, and also argues that implanting a computer inside your skull is not trivial. It carries risks of damage and infection, and might best be reserved for solving life-altering problems like blindness or deafness. [6] Another installment in our serialization of the novel Bones Burnt Black. [7] Despite the numerous benefits, the renowned programmer Randal L. Schwartz insists he will be highly reluctant to accept a computer hardwired into his brain; and will refuse it entirely if its operating system is made by Microsoft since that would make his mind too easily hacked and too prone to spontaneously crashing. [8] Cell phones have changed our culture and altered the way we live, but their changes are not yet complete. Paul Levinson ponders what is yet to come. [9] Large scale engineering projects have been less visible recently thanks to all the buzz about nanotechnology. But the future is not given only to the very small. Those who design big are still thinking big, and the biggest place to build big is in the biggest place of all: space. [3] The podcasting debut of Jim Baen's Universe. Walt Boyes interviews Mike Resnick (winner of five Hugo Awards). [4] How rapid is the growth of home schooling? Is it really better than public school? And are parents even qualified to teach their kids? [6] Another installment in our serialization of the novel: Bones Burnt Black. [7] Is the future we live in today already weirder than the futures we dreamed of decades ago? Sarah A. Hoyt (author and polyglot) thinks so, and insists that if science increases our healthy years by a few more decades this will produce a huge cascade of changes throughout society. [8] Lucienne Diver (one of publishing's top literary agents) describes trends within the publishing industry, as well as her worries and hopes for the future outside the biz. Coe (author and environmentalist with a PhD in environmental history) risks his environmentalist street creds by insisting that it is.
