Hundreds of Papamoa residents are fighting back against a council proposal that they help pay for their own road repairs. Seven streets are set for roadworks in January, but because the streets are considered "low-volume", Tauranga City Council has opted for chipsealing, rather than asphalt. After locals voiced their opposition to that idea, the Council came back with an offer: You want asphalt, you can pay the difference. Dr Daniel van der Walt, senior lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Canterbury and Phillip Brown is the Chair of the Papamoa Residents and Ratepayers Association talk to Jesse.

This Austroads project has investigated methods for engineers to design more efficient and cost-effective road rehabilitation treatments by estimating the remaining fatigue life of existing asphalt. Current design practice assumes existing asphalt layers have no remaining life, even when uncracked. Lower rehabilitation costs will result if design methods are improved to utilise the remaining life of existing uncracked asphalt. In this webinar, the presenters: outline the outcomes of the project, including field and laboratory investigations on the Western Freeway in Victoria discuss the methods tested to estimate the remaining fatigue life of asphalt present the new framework for rehabilitation design to validate with future research. This approach supports more targeted treatments, improved road performance, and long-term savings. The session is relevant for pavement engineers, asset managers, designers, and those involved in planning and delivering road rehabilitation programs.

Im zweiten Teil des Live-Podcasts von Sitzfleisch reden Straps und Flo mit Jana Kesenheimer über Janas Erlebnisse im Finale des Transcontinental Race, wo sich der Dreikampf zwischen ihr und Cynthia Carson und Lael Wilcox noch einmal dramatisch zuspitzte. Jana blieb fokussiert, ließ sich nicht von Überholmanövern von ihrem Plan abbringen und knallte schlussendlich eine fabelhaft schnelle Zeit in den Asphalt. Damit zeigte sich erneut, dass Frauen umso länger die Belastungen dauern, ihre Stärken gegenüber Männern immer besser ausspielen können - denn Janas Fahrzeit in den letzten drei Tagen war bis auf wenige Minuten die schnellste von allen. Welche Emotionen gab es beim Zieleinlauf? Welche Rolle spielen mentale Stärke und die Psyche in diesem Sport? Wie können wir die wachsende Beteiligung von Frauen im Ultracycling und die Initiativen, die Frauen ermutigen, an solchen Rennen teilzunehmen, unterstützen? Abgerundet wird die Episode von einer Fragerunde aus dem Publikum.

Timotheus Hofmeister sitzt im Sauerland, spricht aber mit globalem Blick. Als CEO der Maschinenbaufirma Tracto-Technik hat er eine Mission: Schluss mit dem deutschen Reflex, bei jeder Baustelle die gesamte Straße aufzureißen. Sein Unternehmen entwickelt Maschinen für den grabenlosen Leitungsbau. Damit können Rohre und Kabel unterirdisch verlegt werden, ohne dass die Oberfläche zerstört wird. "Unser Ziel ist, dass jede Baumaßnahme auf dieser Welt zuerst grabenlos angedacht wird", sagt Hofmeister.Wer ihn reden hört, versteht, warum er von diesem Ansatz überzeugt ist. Denn was Hofmeister wirklich ärgert, ist das deutsche Beharrungsvermögen. "Der Deutsche an sich ist nicht ganz so mutig für neue Wege", sagt er. Statt sich offen mit Alternativen auseinanderzusetzen, setzen viele Kommunen beim Glasfaserausbau auf altbekannte Methoden: Bagger, Flex, Dreck.Hofmeister hat es selbst erlebt, direkt vor seiner Firmeneinfahrt. Eine nagelneue, versiegelte Straße sollte kurzerhand wieder aufgerissen werden. "Ich bin sofort mit meinem Auto stehen geblieben, sodass der gar nicht weiter flexen konnte". Dass man die Bauarbeiter erst überzeugen musste, nicht mit der Flex durch den Asphalt zu gehen, sagt für ihn alles über die fehlende Sensibilität im Umgang mit moderner Infrastrukturtechnik.Dabei liegen die Vorteile der grabenlosen Bauweise auf der Hand: weniger Eingriffe in die Umwelt, geringere Kosten über den Lebenszyklus, kürzere Bauzeiten. In Ländern wie Schweden oder Norwegen ist das längst Standard. Dort werden offene Gräben in vielen Städten schlicht verboten. In Deutschland hingegen herrscht oft Planungswirrwarr. Bauämter, Straßenlastträger, private Investoren reden mit, haben aber selten eine gemeinsame Linie. "Es gibt kaum jemanden, der die besten Lösungen objektiv prüft."Besonders scharf kritisiert Hofmeister das deutsche Förderwesen. Lange Zeit wurde der Glasfaserausbau massiv subventioniert. Unternehmen wie Tracto fuhren Produktionskapazitäten hoch und stellten Mitarbeiter ein. "Dann wurden die Fördermaßnahmen einfach gestoppt. Jetzt stockt der Ausbau, viele Unternehmen stehen mit vollen Lagern da".Auch ausländische Firmen, die in Erwartung eines Booms nach Deutschland kamen, ziehen sich wieder zurück.
