Finally we've come to the adaptation of a tragic 1950s Robert Heinlein short story about really cruel timeloops that is “Predestination.” Yup, it's been a long time. We're pretty sure some old man stole our car and messed around with the radio presets and other buttons, and long story short, it's 2018 and our Creedence tapes are missing. …I may be mixing my movie jokes here. Anyway, it's “Predestination,” the 2014 Sarah Snook and Ethan Hawke vehicle that adapts what might have felt like an eminently unadaptable but classic 1959 Robert Heinlein short story, “All You Zombies.” As we say in the episode, if you haven't read “All You Zombies” or watched “Predestination,” we suggest watching the movie first — the twists (of which there are a ton) hit a lot harder if you don't have experience with the short. We definitely suggest checking out “All You Zombies” if you haven't (although it's very similar to what's in the movie) because it's one of those time travel stories that has inspired a lot of others. As we don't advocate piracy, here's an Amazon link where you can snag a Kindle version. Heinlein wrote a couple of these intense timeloop stories, and “All You Zombies” followed another crack at the idea: “By His Bootstraps,” which Heinlein wrote 18 years earlier, and “The Door into Summer,” published in 1957. “By His Bootstraps” is another short story whose influences can definitely be felt resounding through time travel stories, and both works are worth checking out. Another book we mentioned in this episode: “The Man Who Folded Himself,” by David Gerrold. Written in 1973, it also digs into the idea of time travel and meeting yourself, and the weird identity entanglements that can result thereof.
In which the WDC crew geeks out with joy at the presence of David Gerrold, writer of the silver screen and television, novels, short stories, and limericks - and teacher of writing to others. David talks to us about science fiction in the early days, the trend toward social justice awareness and addressing current problems in new ways. From Sleestacks and Tribbles to the strike lines of WGA and SAG-Aftra, David walks us through how Hollywood has changed, and where it needs to go so that everyone involved in the industry can live long and prosper. … Continue...Episode 181-Interview with David Gerrold

For our deep dive of "Bem," we're honored to welcome our very special guest Bill Reed, who directed all six episodes from the second season of "Star Trek: The Animated Series." While on an exploratory mission of the newly discovered planet Delta Theta III, the Enterprise crew is joined by honorary commander Ari Bn Bem, a Pandorian observer whose questionable actions while on board the Enterprise have made Captain Kirk suspicious about his motives. His suspicions are quickly proven correct when Bem sabotages the landing party, leading to their capture by the primitive reptilian beings that inhabit the planet. Kirk and Spock attempt to escape, only to discover the presence of a powerful non-corporeal alien entity that is protecting the natives in an effort to guide them towards intelligence. Written by David Gerrold, who wrote the classic original series episode "The Trouble with Tribbles," "Bem" is a terrific, ambitious and cerebral episode that -- like many of the best episodes of "The Original Series" -- finds the Enterprise crew being humbled by the presence of a very powerful race. Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, was canceled... but luckily for Christel and Richard that wasn't the end, it was only the beginning. We're now Turning our Trekkie focus to those early Saturday mornings from September 8, 1973, to October 12, 1974, on NBC. This continuation of Star Trek spanned 22 episodes over two seasons... but something was different... our beloved characters became CARTOONS! This is the second series in the Star Trek franchise and features mostly the same cast as The Original Series. Show writers David Gerrold and D. C. Fontana are back!!! They characterized The Animated Series as effectively a fourth season of Star Trek. So being the super zealous hosts as they are, Christel and Richard took a day to watch the entire series! Binge-tastic!!! Come join the fun as the Animated Series is discussed in depth and in full, going to places that neither host had gone before! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-and-christel/support

Welcome to season 3 of The BIG Sci-Fi Podcast! In this season opener, we have the privilege of talking with David Gerrold who wrote one of the most famous and popular Trek episodes of all time, The Trouble With Tribbles (OST). David also worked on the first season of TNG, but is a prolific and talented science fiction author outside of the Trek universe. He won Hugo and Nebula awards for his book, The Martin Child, which was later adapted into a film. David Gerrold is the legendary screenwriter and novelist who is most famous for inventing Tribbles and writing much of the series bible of Star Trek The Next Generation. More importantly, he is the Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of The Martian Child, The Man Who Folded Himself, and the War Against the Chtorr series of books. His most recent novel Hella was one of my favorite reads of 2021. It is an incredible work of world-building and hard science speculative fiction. Set on a colony world that has enormous everything. This is a shorter interview than I normally do because I did it after interviewing David for an article on Dorothy Fontana. In this interview we talk about the novel Hella, the inspiration, David's writing process, building the world of Hella, then we talk about general science fiction stuff, Harlan Ellison stories, and how Barry Malazberg saved his classic time-travel novel. Fun stuff. ➡ Reminder: I will be writing much less frequently and much shorter in November — and November only. So for this month, I have paused payment from paid subscribers. Also, I'm making all new content free without a paywall. In December, however, everything will be back to normal: typically three meaty essays and two enlightening Q&As a week, along with a pro-progress podcast like this one
The Enterprise is on a desperate mission to the planet Ardana to secure the consignment of a rare substance called Zenite, which is the only antidote to a botanical plaque that is threatening all life on the planet Merak II. But the promised delivery of the Zenite is delayed when Captain Kirk gets caught in the middle of a class struggle between the allegedly "inferior" cave-dwelling Troglyte miners and the so-called "superior" intellectual society that inhabits the cloud city of Stratos. With time running out, Captain Kirk takes matters into his own hands, which threatens to further the divide between the Troglytes and the Stratos city dwellers, which in effect will threaten to destroy all life on Merak II. "The Cloud Minders" may not represent "Star Trek" at its best, but at this point so late in the 3rd Season -- not to mention so close to the end of the series -- it comes close enough. It's an ambitious episode that features a strong message, notable production values and stellar performances, all of which make "The Cloud Minders" represent a return to form to the values and standards that made "Star Trek" so great in the first place. Following our deep dive of "The Cloud Minders," we're honored to once again be joined for very special interview by writer David Gerrold! In addition to writing the story for "The Cloud Minders," he is perhaps best known in "Star Trek" history for writing its most popular episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles." Gerrold is also the recipient of the 2022 Robert A. Heinlein Award, honoring a lifetime of outstanding achievements in science fiction writing. Join David Gerrold for a breakfast buffet as we discuss what he means by "humility in the face of excellence," the curse of fame and why J. D. Salinger may have had the right idea, how the more you know the slower you write, the challenge of living up to having won the Robert A. Heinlein Award (and why Heinlein once called him "a very nasty man"), the scariest story he ever wrote, how Sarah Pinsker helped him understand what he really felt about Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," the kind of person he might have been had he not moved to L.A. as a kid, the fannish way he found out he'd been nominated for a Hugo Award, how it feels to already know what the headline of his obituary will be, and much more.
