Social media is perplexing to me. I never know what will catch people's attention and take off, for good or for ill. This one took off for ill. The verse literally says not to do it AND that people who do it will be punished. The Lord God above has promised punishment for those who use His name flippantly and vainly. This is serious! Yet for the hundreds of people shouting at me on social media that I was a Karen, no fun, pain in the behind judgmental church lady, the bulk of the comments made me realize most of the people commenting easily believe that taking the Lord's name in vain is a 'respectable sin'. Or not a sin at all! read on to find out more Links mentioned GotQuestions: What Does it Mean to Take the Lord's name in Vain? Gerry Brooks covered Connecticut for 44 years, and had a front-row seat for many of the biggest milestones in Whalers' history. He talks with Chris about what it was like when Howard Baldwin and the team first relocated to Hartford, the success of the early days, and what it was like covering the collapse of the old Civic Center. There's also some great stories about how the community rallied to support the team in the wake of what happened, the deep and abiding bond between the players and fans, as well as the rebound that culminated with playoff appearances in the mid-1980s.
This week, Anna chats about signing up for a 10K, work updates, and helping her inter with interview prep. They can't get to the end of the year without a shout out to Gerry Brooks. They also discuss the relevance of paying with checks. Anna relays a story about a not-so-secret admirer and how kissy faces are the way to show affection. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. Let's get started. -- Hey listener, are you a principal in Illinois? If so, I hope that you're planning to be in attendance at this year's Illinois Principal Association Conference in Peoria from October 24th through the 26th. With keynotes by Gerry Brooks and Luis Cruz and tons of informational sessions from educators all over the state, including yours truly, it is a can't miss event. And you know what, I will be recording a series of Principal Ponderings live from the event. So, if you're going to be there and you want to connect, just let me know. Okay, let's get into today's episode. -- In this episode, I reconnect with Jennifer Haston-Maciejewski, who works at Greenfield Central High School as an alternative placement teacher and behavior specialist/coach. She is also a trained yoga, mindfulness, and meditation instructor; and is a contributing author in several books. Jennifer sits as the vice president on the board of directors for the Coalition of Schools Educating Mindfully. She is a nature therapy practitioner and is currently converting an old school bus into a tiny home on wheels for herself and her family of 6 to travel in during the summer. During our conversation, Jennifer reflected on her past as one of “those students.” You know the ones. The ones who are never absent and always question the rules. She pointed out that we, as adults, need to know the why behind rules and so do our students because it needs to make sense. We continued by exploring some of the current trends in education and cautioned about developing learned helplessness. Yes, we need to love on our students, and we need to trauma informed. But we also need to ensure that all of their needs are being met. Jennifer pushes educators a little further when she challenges that many of us reflect on the easy questions. That we post and share the good in our professions but are we spending time reflecting on the tough questions … the ones that will really push us outside of our comfort zones. Ready to be challenged by one of those students? Then let's go. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. If you like what you are hearing, please be sure to like, subscribe, and of course share it with friends and family. I'd also love to hear your thoughts about the show so please leave a comment or two as well. The month of August is upon us and that typically means the start of a new school year is in sight for parents, but this year will look much different for students across the state as COVID-19 concerns cause schools to change up how students learns. My guest this week on Uniquely Kentucky is a central Kentucky man that by day is one of those educators, but by night and weekend he is encouraging his fellow teachers through his hilarious social media posts shot from the inside of his car. Gerry Brooks draws from his years in the classroom and as a principal to put a smile on the faces of others through humor. Brooks has become a social media star with well over two million followers and tours the country taking his message to his fellow educators.

All that and much more in Episode 9.
Now that we are past the 4th of July, predictably, attention is being turned to schools. Do we open them this fall? When do we open them if we do? And what precautions will be taken to help mitigate the risks to students and teachers and other staff? While this is all serious business, if you want a chuckle and a relatively light-hearted take on these questions, take a look at this bit by educator and administrator, Gerry Brooks. The particular YouTube video to check out is entitled, "Classroom Job Assignments for this year..."In this episode, I comment on how I love Brooks' humorous take on the various implications of going back to school in the fall, but he also points out some very serious considerations. And that's what I talk about in this week's episode. Each individual listener is going to have to make an individual decision about whether or not he or she goes back to school in the fall.To learn more about Gerry Brooks, click here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-6WUaQSC_AfKZrinPuhVFwTo make an appointment to talk about your individual situation, click here for a 20-minute complimentary session: https://teachersintransition.com/calendar.To reach out to Kitty by email, write to kittyboitnott@gmail.com

Most members of minority communities encounter experiences that they know wouldn't happen to members of the majority community or dominant demographic. "That wouldn't happen if..." or "They only say that because..." is not an uncommon refrain, not only among queer and trans communities, but also among POCs, religious minorities, and differently abled persons. Between Jess' new job and being percieved as a "girl", George's continuing experience as a man who was socialized female, and our experience raising children with unique challenges, we have our share of "unusual" experiences as well.
