A month forecasted that Accenture was about to make a material acquisition in the creator space. This week it happened. Accenture Song is acquiring Whaler Agency — the most awarded creator agency in the Western hemisphere in a carve-out plus three-year partnership that's far more interesting than the headline. But is it really "the largest creator economy transaction ever"? Christian runs the math. The claim doesn't survive contact with a calculator unless there's a lot more going on than a simple agency purchase.Christian and Ayelet break down the structure, what Accenture actually bought (hint: it's the $600M in media spend and the measurement layer, not just the creators), and why this probably isn't the end of Accenture's media buying spree.⏱️ TIMESTAMPS0:39 — Welcome to Market and Deals Friday, June 121:20 — The victory lap: our Episode 61 Accenture prediction came true2:06 — Why the deal took longer than expected (deals just take time)2:20 — Why we didn't name Whaler at the time — protecting a people-heavy business3:05 — When and how to tell your team you're selling: a real consideration for owners3:46 — What happened: Whaler Agency joins Accenture Song, terms undisclosed4:28 — The $44B creator economy and why Whaler sits in the middle of it4:50 — The real prize: $600M in media spend + the measurement and data layer5:33 — Reading it against the holdcos: consultants are coming for creator businesses6:16 — The math problem: can this really be "the largest creator economy deal ever"?6:50 — Why a $500M price on ~$12M EBITDA (40x) doesn't add up for the agency alone8:00 — The carve-out + call option + licensing theory that makes the number work8:30 — Is Whaler Agency just step one? In 1832, a New Bedford whaleship called the Mentor struck a reef in the remote Pacific archipelago of Palau. The tiny, 100-foot-long ship began sinking immediately, and the 22 men who made up its crew were thrown into one of the most extraordinary survival ordeals in American maritime history. Ten men vanished the night of the wreck and were never seen again. The survivors found themselves stranded among island peoples with their own complex politics, rival confederations, and fifty years of complicated history with Western ships that the castaways knew nothing about. What followed was a story of captivity, starvation, forced tattooing, a rescue that made everything worse, and a years-long scramble across islands and ocean before the last survivors finally made it home. Today's guest is Eric Jay Dolin, author of "The Wreck of the Mentor." We untangle one of the great forgotten stories of the Age of Sail, and explore how fifty years of British guns and gunboat diplomacy warped Palauan politics long before the Mentor arrived, why the men who attacked the castaways with war clubs also cooked them lavish feasts and wept for their dead, and how crewman Horace Holden kept himself alive on a famine-stricken island when almost everything pointed toward death.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In October 1897, eight whaling ships became trapped in pack ice near Point Barrow, Alaska — the northernmost tip of North America — with 265 men aboard and no possibility of rescue by sea until the following summer. With the crew facing starvation, President McKinley ordered the only vessel capable of Arctic work, the Revenue Cutter Bear, to attempt the impossible: get food to those men before they died. What followed was a 99-day, 1,500-mile overland march through an Alaskan winter, at temperatures as low as negative 45 degrees Fahrenheit, led by volunteer officers on foot and snowshoes. The plan hinged entirely on a herd of reindeer — and on a missionary who left his wife and children alone in a remote Bering Strait village to guide them through the most brutal leg of the journey. This is the rescue that almost no one knows about, and it is one of the most remarkable survival stories in American history. 00:06 Wilderness First Aid 01:08 Podcast Intro 01:32 Point Barrow Rescue Tease 03:27 Sources Listener Shoutout 04:19 Whalers Trapped In Ice 06:14 Rescue Mission Problem 07:30 Reindeer Rescue Plan 07:43 Meet The Volunteers 12:00 Reindeer Program Origins 13:37 Overland Trek Begins 14:37 Team Splits To Survive 17:00 Negotiating For Reindeer 20:09 Driving The Herd North 21:15 Arctic Medicine Reality 22:32 Snow Blindness Solutions 23:14 Snowblindness Hacks 24:06 Power Bar Wrapper Goggles 25:30 Calorie Deficit Breakdown 27:02 Bad News From Tilton 28:10 Belvedere In Ice 28:57 Arrival At Point Barrow 30:54 Scurvy And Reindeer Cure 32:53 Bear Breaks Through Ice 34:14 Medals And Missing Credit 35:55 Where They Ended Up 39:49 The Lost Ship Wanderer 40:21 Jarvis Philosophy And Wrap Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ REFERENCES Jarvis, David H. The sei whale is one of the largest creatures on Earth. Adults can be more than 60 feet long and weigh as much as a fully loaded semi—the third-largest of all whales. And they're found across the world, in all but the warmest and coldest waters. Yet they're poorly known, by the public and scientists alike. The sei whale—spelled S-E-I—gets its name from a Norwegian name for pollock, a cod-like fish. The name was bestowed because the fish and whales showed up at the same time of year. Sei whales have rows of structures made from the same material as teeth and hair, known as baleen. The baleen filters plankton and tiny fish and squid from the water—about two tons per day. Much about sei whales remains mysterious. In part, that's because they live mainly in the deep ocean, away from shore. We know they're usually alone or in small groups, and they can race at more than 30 miles an hour for short distances. But much of their life cycle is poorly understood. Whalers killed a quarter of a million sei before the practice was banned. Recent population estimates range from perhaps 50,000 whales to as many as 80,000. The whales face many threats. They can be hit by ships or entangled in fishing nets. And the warming climate can kill or displace their prey, forcing the whales to change their foraging and breeding grounds. Biologists are trying to find out more about this reclusive giant to better understand how it's adapting to the environment. The post Sei Whales appeared first on Marine Science Institute. From our first meeting at The Whaler in Venice Beach to visits in New Orleans, Ron's unique perspective on life and technology has always inspired me.Ron's new book, The Fifth Shock, serves as a philosophical wake-up call addressing the profound shifts happening in our world today. In our conversation, we explore the complex relationship between spirituality, artificial intelligence, and the future of humanity. Ron is the Founder and Managing Partner of Noetic Investment Partners, with over 40 years of experience in technology and finance. He's been instrumental in shaping the way companies approach data and AI, especially through his work in data assetization—turning data into a capital-grade asset.Ron discusses how AI is transforming human identity, the critical need for economic innovations like Universal Behavioral Income, and the moral responsibilities we face with advancing technology. He advocates for the integration of human wisdom into AI systems and a digital Bill of Rights to safeguard individual freedom in a rapidly evolving digital era. Beyond the intellectual discussion, Ron shares a deeply personal story about his daughter, a storm in Tulum, and a poignant poem that encapsulates resilience and courage. This episode blends cutting-edge ideas with heartfelt storytelling—a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of technology, spirituality, and human sovereignty.TakeawaysThe conversation explores the awakening to spirituality and AI.Wisdom is essential in the age of AI.Humanity must navigate the challenges posed by AI.The need for a Universal Behavioral Income is highlighted.AI should enhance human agency, not replace it.Geopolitical implications of digital power are significant.Data is becoming the most valuable asset in the modern economy.Consciousness may be the key to understanding the universe.Moral implications of AI must be addressed.  Machines rely on human creativity and authenticity.Innovation's value is declining due to rapid replication.Congress has become ineffective in governance. The media has compromised its integrity for profit.A grassroots revolution is necessary for change.Parenting can instill strength and independence in children.Life lessons can be learned through shared experiences.Mediocrity should be avoided in pursuit of greatness. The meaning of life is a profound question worth exploring.Sound Bite"How do we navigate this?""My voice is my whip.""Mediocrity is a disease."Chapters00:00 Introduction and Personal Connection01:48 Awakening to Spirituality and AI05:30 The Human Experience vs. AI08:46 Data Sovereignty and Behavioral Income12:20 The Future of AI and Human Agency15:47 Geopolitical Implications of Digital Rights19:32 The Evolution of Wealth and Value22:45 The Broken Accounting System and Change26:11 Spirituality and the Path Forward30:34 The Devil's Bargain: A Reflection on Spirituality31:26 The Metaverse and Voluntary Extinction32:16 Preserving Human Consciousness in a Digital Age35:58 The Intersection of Technology, Philosophy, and Spirituality37:33 Consciousness as the Fifth Element38:47 Spiritual Recursion and Algorithmic Logic42:34 Moral Constructs in a Digital World46:29 The Homogenization of Beauty and Authenticity49:24 Innovation and the Value of Networks53:07 Disappointment in Governance and Media56:34 Global Political Landscape and the Call for Change01:01:12 A Stormy Journey: Father-Daughter Bonding and Life Lessons01:10:27 Empowerment Through Authenticity and Courage01:14:35 Navigating the Future: Technology, Sovereignty, and Human ConnectionConnect with Ron:linkedinInstagram Facebook XThe Fifth ShockXIG FacebookLet's Connect!WebsiteInstagram FacebookYoutubeRumbleTik TokLinkedin

Disaster struck in 1871 as ships ventured farther North in search of whales. Ship's Captains ignored warnings from the Eskimos. The ice closed in and trapped 32 ships, three of them were crushed. Captains of the remaining 29 ships sent whaleboats sixty miles south to ask for help from ships that were safe. Leaving their ships, two hundred whaling boats made the dangerous journey and were rescued by the whaling ships waiting for them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Whalers left New England for three to five years, sailed around South America, stopped in Honolulu on their way to the Bering Sea. Here they found whales, walruses and salmon. After losing their young son in a tragic accident, Astrid, a Norwegian botanist specializing in Arctic flora, decides to join her husband, Tor, at a remote whaling station in the Arctic, where he spends every whaling season hunting belugas. In heartfelt journal entries, Astrid describes being stranded in a whaling hut through the dark season of 1937-38. She writes about the miscalculations, the terrible weather, the fear of polar bears and freezing to death, the people they've met on their journey, Tor's crew, and her slow disintegration after giving birth to another son, alone in the freezing, dark hut while Tor hunts for food. We know that Tor survived the ordeal, because he is reading Astrid's journal filled with letters to their dead son. The Last Whaler (Regal House, 2024) is a gorgeous, well-researched historical novel about endurance, isolation, the environment, the Nazi incursion into Norway, the pain of postpartum depression, and the human will to survive. Cynthia Reeves is the author of two previous books of fiction: the novel in stories Falling Through the New World (2024), winner of Gold Wake Press's Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands (2007), winner of Miami University Press's Novella Prize. Her fiction, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was included in If the Storm Clears (Blue Cactus Press, 2024), an anthology of speculative literature that concerns the sublime in the natural world. Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard's western shores, as well as two subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen, that have inspired her writing since then. In August 2024, she circumnavigated Svalbard aboard the icebreaker MV Ortelius carrying a hundred artists, scientists, and crew. A Hawthornden Fellow, Cynthia has also been awarded residencies to Vermont Studio Center and Art & Science in the Field.
