July 29: The Age of Magical Overthinking book talk at Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, WA (free!) Time to Milky Jelly™ cleanse your souls, culties. If you were alive in 2017, and anywhere near our same millennial pink corner of the internet, then you KNEW what a Glossier girl was. The emblem of relatable-but-aspirational coolness helmed by cult leader… ahem, CEO… Emily Weiss (of The Hills fame) was so much more than a cosmetics line. Glossier was a lifestyle, a uniform, an identity template, a cultural phenomenon, a religion? Come on, those pink bubble wrap pouches??? If you had one, it meant you'd reached a certain kind of ~enlightenment~. Alongside the likes of other rare brands like Starbucks and SoulCycle, Glossier was a ”cult-followed” company through in through… but was something more sinister lurking underneath? Why did the brand take off as astronomically as it did? And what is the status of the “cult” now? At long last, host Amanda is (over)analyzing the spiritual movement that is Glossier with none other than beauty journalist Marisa Meltzer, author of the New York Times bestselling book Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier (out now in paperback!). On today's show we chat to Erin Deering - ex-co-founder of multi-million dollar swimwear brand Triangl, and recent author of her first book, Hanging By A Thread. The idea for Triangl was simple: The year was 2012 and Erin struggled to find an affordable bikini she liked, so alongside her partner at the time, Craig Ellis, she decided to manufacture them. The idea to do this together, by the way, was decided upon on just their second date - and a day after Erin's 27th birthday. By 2015, the company was selling more than 1000 bikinis a day and Topshop's Philip Green wanted to invest. From the outside, you'd think she had it all: a life in Monaco, flying first class, and their own super yacht. But this was far from reality and Erin was very much struggling. In 2016, Erin left not only her business, Triangl, but also her partner. Today, Erin lives with her four kids and husband Zac Keane in Melbourne. She is a businesswoman and entrepreneur through and through and has honestly been through it all. We're talking pretty much every high and low in business and life that you can imagine. So join us as we unpack the highs and lows Erin experienced with Triangl, the fashion business she is launching a little later in 2024 and all things Hanging By A Thread - her very first book! – Erin has a number of books lined up - the one she wants to read the most is Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier. She also has Surrounded By Idiots and Small Giants on her list. Step into the fascinating world of journalism with the incredible Marisa Meltzer, our guest on the latest episode of In Her Shoes podcast. Based in the vibrant city of New York, Marisa has been a trailblazing journalist for over a decade, covering the glamorous realms of beauty, fashion, wellness, and celebrity culture. Her bylines read like a who's who of top national publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Marisa isn't just a seasoned journalist; she's also the brilliant author behind three previous books. Today, she takes us behind the scenes of her latest triumph, the instant bestseller "Glossy," offering insights into her writing process and the captivating journey that led to its success. Get ready to be inspired as Marisa Meltzer shares her story and wisdom on the In Her Shoes podcast. INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Financial Times Best Book of the Year The “compulsively readable narrative of beauty, business, privilege, and mogul-dom” (The New York Times) that reveals—for the first time—exactly wat happened at Glossier, one of America's hottest and most consequential startups, and dives deep into the enigmatic, visionary woman responsible for it all. Called “one of the most disruptive brands in beauty” by Forbes, Glossier revolutionized the beauty industry with its sophisticated branding and unique approach to influencer marketing, almost instantly making the company a juggernaut with rabid fans. It also taught a generation of business leaders how to talk to Millennial and Gen Z customers and build a cult following online. At the center of the story lies Emily Weiss, the elusive former Teen Vogue “superintern” on the reality show The Hills turned Into the Gloss beauty blogger who had the vision, guts, and searing ambition needed to launch Glossier. She cannily turned every experience, every meeting into an opportunity to fuel her own personal success. Together with her expensive, signature style and singular vision for the future of consumerism, she could not be stopped. Just how did a girl from suburban Connecticut with no real job experience work her way into the bathrooms and boudoirs of the most influential names in the world and build that access into a 1.9-billion-dollar business? Is she solely responsible for its success? And why, eight years later, at the height of Glossier mania, did she step down? In Glossy, journalist and author Marisa Meltzer combines in-depth interviews with former Glossier employees, investors, and Weiss herself to bring you inside the walls of this fascinating and secretive company. From fundraising to product launches and unconventional hiring practices, Meltzer exposes the inner workings of Glossier's culture, culminating in the story of Weiss herself. The Devil Wears Prada for the Bad Blood generation, Glossy is not just a gripping portrait of one of the most important business leaders of her generation, but also a chronicle of an era.

The makeup brand Glossier developed a cult-like following thanks to genius marketing tactics and a strong vision from founder and CEO Emily Weiss. But eight years later, Weiss stepped down. Why? Journalist Marisa Meltzer joins us to discuss her new book, Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.
What ever happened to the “girlboss”? There was Audrey Gelman founder of the women-only social club and networking space the Wing, Tyler Haney of sustainable workout brand Outdoor Voices, and perhaps the most popular of them all, Emily Weiss of the cult favorite beauty brand Glossier. Marisa Meltzer, author of Glossy: Ambition, Beauty and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier joins us to break down why most (if not all) of these girlboss empires have crumbled — and why we often give men a break when women are held to higher standards. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who is looking for advice on how to help her daughter improve her credit score, and we sit down with Christine Roberts, President of Citizens Pay, to discuss the best ways to pay for purchases over time. For our money tip of the week, our best advice for saving just a little bit of money if you feel like you can't get out of the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck. Join the HerMoney community! Listen in to our live-recorded podcast with Marisa Meltzer, the author of Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier. We treated this interview as a book club of sorts, and asked Marisa all of your (and our!) pressing questions. She discusses her interviews with Emily Weiss, the rise (and plateau?) of Glossier, her reporting process for the book, why the #GirlBoss era feels so cringey now, and—most importantly—who should play Emily Weiss when Marisa's book gets optioned (hopefully!) for a movie. We hope you enjoy this fun and freewheeling conversation, including a special appearance from Marisa's bulldog, Joan. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comNancy and Sarah talk with Marisa Meltzer, author of the new book “Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.” The pretty-in-pink makeup brand Glossier became a phenomenon after it debuted in 2014, and the book tracks the rise and not-exactly-fall of its founder Emily Weiss — telegenic, driven, an MTV star at 22 — who built a billion-dollar company that exploded on Instagram and defined the effortlessly chic life young women coveted, at least for a time. How did she do it? Weiss has a “WASPier version of chutzpah,” as Meltzer puts it, and she somehow managed to survive the “Girlboss gotcha” purge that ousted other female CEOs.Also discussed:* The verboten intimacy of people's make-up rituals* “Emily the super intern” on “The Hills”* How is makeup actually made?* #girlboss blah blah* The higher the pedestal, the longer the fall* The “zest for blood” that was 2020* Which actor is making Marisa hornier than she's been in a while?* Nancy's energy fields* Breast milk soap anyone?

Before she stepped down as CEO, before she was a mom, and before she led Glossier through three more rounds of funding and a $1.2 billion valuation, Emily Weiss came to the Fat Mascara studio to talk about a gray logo sweatshirt and her plans for world domination. In this refreshing interview (originally recorded in 2017), she opens up in a way we haven't seen in a long time, talking about her favorite mascara (perhaps the one that inspired Glossier Lash Slick, which launched in 2018?); the Arm & Hammer deodorant she buys in bulk; and what it was like to turn a scrappy blog into a beauty behemoth. We're publishing this now, as a “Best of FM” interview, so you can listen before our upcoming interview with Marisa Meltzer, author of the forthcoming Glossier exposé, Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.Products mentioned in this episode: shopmy.us/collections/173924Episode recap with links: fatmascara.com/best-of-fat-mascaraSponsor links & discount codes: fatmascara.com/sponsorsPrivate Facebook Group: Fat Mascara Raising a WandSocial media: @fatmascara, @jessicamatlin, @jenn_editSubmit a "Raise A Wand" product recommendation and be featured on the show: email info@fatmascara.com or leave a voicemail at 646-481-8182 Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/fatmascara.
